Just bought Z #3, 1973
Thanks guys - I've posted the pictures that sold me, it is a bit of a project though. There is a significant amount of work to do on it, but I believe it will come out nicely. Ron, they are pretty rare up here. I get alot of people asking what the 280 is. Lots of people mistake it for a Porsche. You are correct in a way - our cold weather = lots of salt on the roads. Due to the salt there are very few intact survivors and most of them are heavily rusted. Only the owners migrate to florida for the winters.

Just bought Z #3, 1973
Hey guys just put the cheque in the mail to Cold Springs. I hardly released it from my fingers when a shudder of remorse ran up my spine - normal, for me anyway in the rediculas process of buying without seeing. :stupid: Won't see the car for at least four weeks - I'll decide if I will post trailer pictures when I see it. It looks really good outside and most of the shots look good (as you may have noticed from my recent posts) with the exception of the rear hatch lip and the battery tray area. I am hoping I can get her road worthy and patched up for 1K - I am anticipating typical issues and hoping that it doesn't go much beyond that. POR will get another $50 Anyway she's a pretty girl. BTW - Anyone have centre peice for one of these hubcaps that you are willing to part with?

Hello and pwr antenna question
You can frequently find a used one on ebay for <$100. I bought and installed one two years ago. The vendor had it cleaned up like new and it works fine. To install: the biggest nuisance I found was the removal and reinstallation of the interior panelling to get at it. The rest was pretty easy. You'll need some interior plastic rivets (ebay as well) to complete the job - best get them befor you take it apart. Good luck

Thanks guys - I knew it wasn't a stock setup. Needed to confirm. Is there a way to tell if these are the early or later type roundtops from these pictures?

Please identify this setup
I was looking at a 70's setup and this appears to be very similar. It's a 73 built in September 72 - so they should be flattops, shouldn't they?

Stock interior leather seats?
Mat There are a couple of other matters that have had me on the fence for a few days. I even wrote the guy and advised him that I was not interetsed and he responded with a better offer - I wasn't posturing, it is just the way it fell together. Anyway it is back on and the major issue is the hatch ledge is poor, otherwise it is pretty nice accepting the standard bumps. I may be interested in those seats if this goes through though.

Stock interior leather seats?
I am still fiddling around with this car from Nevada - If I lived there I would buy it on the spot but the shipping fees makes it hard to commit. There are some flaws but as you see there are some very nice points as well.

Stock interior leather seats?
Didn't think so, the literature thats kickin around shows a very limited number of options without leather as one of them. These seats look like leather and the car is otherwise, pretty well original gear. They don't have vents but they are a pretty tidy looking job.

Stock interior leather seats?
I have looked at many advertisements for Zs over the past couple of years and I am frequently seeing it stated that the car comes with leather seats. I personally have not seen one with leather seats from the factory. Is there such a creature?

Best product to remove paint on trim?
Can't say for sure if this will be safe on vinyl, but for overspray I've used contact cement remover - worked great on enamel paint oversprayed on rubber. I wouldn't use too much or rub too hard though - it's fairly potent.

Starting my Restoration
I have the 3.545 with an 82 5 speed - it's no doubt better than the 3.36, but I too recommend going to the 3.9 if you're going that way. What I have is adequate but I like the zip of the Z and it is diminished with the incorrect rear end. Another thing about that is you need to be going about 50 to use 5th or you'll be under 2K rpm - sounds lousy and it's probably not healthy. Merely my opinion. I just got a line on a 3.9 For $75 - I will do the switch.

Rear hatch ledge rot?
I got the history backwards: the car was purchased by a young woman whose father wouldn't let her drive it and it sat in a garage for it's first fifteen years, when she passed away they sold the car. In Nevada as far as I know.

Rear hatch ledge rot?
I don't have the history other than it was owned previously by a young woman, freind of the family - died 15 years ago of cancer. Car has been garaged pretty well since that time. I offered $2500, shipping was $2500 + 200 fuel surcharge. Not suitable for a long haul drive. I am still waffling on it. It just looks so nice outside.

Rear hatch ledge rot?
Turned out to be an interesting case. I spoke to the vendor on many occasions, trying to gather details on the vehicle. The vendor was a decent older man handling it for his son - he was sending me lots of pictures, unfortunately almost none of the ones I needed. Some were the inside of the bumper (?) or the fan belt or a temporary carpet on the passenger side. Few that were useful. The pictures of the good things balanced out that the rear hatch was an acceptable job if the price of the car was suitable, because as described it was a relatively low milage car and the rest looked very good - paint looked excellent (original), had the original carpet in the back and it was nice. I got a price on the shipping and found one I could accept - preparing to make an offer. I Started to become freindlier with the vendor, as I waited for the outcome of another situation. Got to know about him, the family, his background (korean war vet, work in San Quenton with the death row prisoners) a bit about current events - all fairly interesting - I was enjoying talking to him. Finaly I sent him a breakdown of the car issues as I saw them and made an opening offer. Next thing I get one of the pictures I asked for from the start "the battery tray" (mdbrandy) - it was poor with moderate/heavy rust beneath, next right out of the blue he sends me the compression results: 110 across the board (I have 150 at twice the milage). It was starting to look as if I had misjudged - I lost my nerve and backed out. It still might be a good buy, but including shipping it was too much of a gamble for me. I attached a few shots so you could get a feel for the appearence of the vehicle, so you wouldn't think I was a total tool. It is a looker. I guess the message I am conveying is "In spite of the fact that a car looks nice on the internet, you are not seeing it first hand and the certainty of hands on inspection is never there".

It's at Funchal (Ilha da Madeira) which is a small island off the coast of Morroco (North of the Canaria Islands). Shipping is the issue.

Left hand drive too! I wonder what shipping would be?

I sent the owner/vendor a request for additional pictures. Here they are. How much is that in USD or Canadian loonies.
