I may be way off base, but I would say there is some kind of game going on on the bidding. Tell me if I'm wrong guys. JLP

They look great Randy, I would have seen you post sooner but I have been out of town. How did you like the copy of the original installation instructions? They really look nice, can't wait to see a set back on my car in the future. Jerry

72 on ebay
Carl, I agree with you. I emailed the person who listed the car last week and basically said I could not bid any higher unless a few questions were answered. Not being able to lay hands or eyes on the car, I felt he should be ready to answer a few questions. First could he document the miles? It may just be the photo but the steering wheel looks to have a lot of wear for a 36K car. I also asked if the car had been or could be started and moved to be shipped. The person having listed the car said he would have the owner call, no call, until just a few minutes ago. (the auction has ended) I also just received an email from the owner offering the car for $13,150. Once again, if as represented the car could be worth the money. But it is more than I would be willing to pay without some confirmation of the cars condition and history. JLP

72 on ebay
I agree, without eyes on inspection it is hard to know what this car is worth. I am concerned about the reserve, in my attempts to communicate with the seller I get the feeling that he thinks the car is very valuable. The car is already close to the max I would like to pay. In my experience a car sitting this long without preventive maintenance can suffer major drive line damage. But I live in the rust belt and it may not suffer the same in that climate. We will see tomorrow! JLP

Beautiful silver 240 on Ebay
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=019&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=290090473739&rd=1&rd=1 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1971-Datsun-240z-Mint-Condition-California-Beauty_W0QQitemZ290092734632QQcategoryZ6187QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Not to beat a dead horse but with close inspection of the “refreshed†Z which sold for $14,100 the rear interior, including the towers and wheel wells, have been carpeted, there are a number of incorrect parts on the car and who knows what lurks under that nice coat of paint. Now on the other hand the “sleeper†78K original 71 went off without meeting the reserve. I was the high bidder in the end. I was given a second chance offer, which I am still considering, of $6,300. If this car is as presented, and I believe it is, another $7,800 invested in a refresh would, in my opinion, put you in a far better example than the $14,100 car. I am always leery of a partially refreshed Z car with no attention to detail. If I were a more motivated buyer (didn't have so much money tied up in projects) at this time, I would not hesitate on the second chance offer. I did tell the seller that I would honor my original bid so we are just a few hundred dollars apart at this time. I am looking for a project for my son and I, this car fits the criteria I am looking for. I believe this to be a relatively easy car to make into a very nice drivable original series 1 example. The only thing that I could find that was not original on this car are the door mirrors and the radio and the original radio comes with the car. I guess it all comes down to what you are looking for. Just my 2 cents. jlp

Resto help/direction please!
Some folks have gone to great lengths to provide great replacement parts such as vinyl interior parts. You can get a lot of what you’re looking for from Les Cannaday (Classic Datsun Motorsports). He is also a wealth of information on restoration. After many years of procrastination on the restoration of my 72 and many discussions with Les, I decided to just have him do my restoration. But he can be of help at all levels with correct parts and information for your restoration. I agree with starting with the suspension components strip them down have them powder coated and install new bushings and work you way through the rust, paint, mechanics and interior. Good luck and keep us posted. Here is a link to Classic Datsun Motorsports; http://www.classicdatsun.com/

Gold code 918 70 240z automatic on ebay
I bid on the above car and was high bidder but did not meet reserve. All in all I believe my bid price was about right for this car, but who knows! Having my 72 in the shop for restoration, I am not an overly motivated bidder. JLP

Gold code 918 70 240z automatic on ebay
I have been watching the car, I agree with Arne, the automatic is a minus with me. If the car is as advertised it would be a nice car to restore. I am still thinking about making an offer. I have also been watching the silver 71 with 78k miles in AZ listed on ebay. It may be able to be bought right and would also make a nice restore. Is there anyone in the area that has seen the car or would be willing to take a look? Thanks Jerry

Take a look, original series one car, good history, with the exception of a few small items (radio) all original. If all is as it seems, it would be a great candidate for restoration. Jerry

Side Stripes..before and after
Jayhawk, I still have a set of original stripes, in the box with the datsun part number. So I do not believe that all stripes were aftermarket but most probably were. I do know that the style on my 72 were a factory accessory. Jerry Purcell

Side Stripes..before and after
Randy, I have always liked the side stripes. They seem to "shorten" the car. Your stripes are not quite original or there may have been more than one style, I don't know. The original side stripes, as came on my car, had the 240Z cut out of the middle stripe making the lettering the color of the car. I have attached a photo of the original stripes on my 72. It is not a great photo but you get the idea. The original white stripes had a color block backing so the car color did not change the white of the stripe. I had reproduction sets made and they will be installed upon completion of the restoration. Jerry

Thanks to this site I was able to find a set of original Black Pearl Mirrors for my restoration project. Mike Dunham (moonpup) came to the rescue. Mike responded to my post last week and supplied a set of mirrors. Mike shipped them directly to Classic Datsun Motorsports, Les received them today and reported that they were in great condition.:knockedou The dealer had installed black pearl mirrors painted to macht the car along with American Racing wheels (libres), spook, and the white 240Z stripes. When it is finished it will be equipped just as it was upon delivery from the dealership.:classic:

Finally, some pictures of the progress on the restoration. It is stripped and ready for the body shop. The good news is that the car is not so bad that we need to replace the complete rear quarters so I will be able to sale my NOS quarters to help pay for the restoration. We have been considering options on the underside of the car. At this point I believe that we are going to, after blasting the complete car, seal the bottom with an epoxy primer and color the bottom then apply rubberized undercoat. The wheel wells will be treated the same with the exception of body guard being applied and then painted to match the car, no undercoat. Thoughts??? The engine is fresh so it will just need to be painted and detailed, the 10 qt pan removed and replace with a stock oil pan, and a set of Z Therapy carbs. Your opinions welcome! I am getting ready to list a few nice, some rare, Series 1 parts to help offset the cost of the restoration. I just have to find the time!!! Take a look at the progress in the odyssey of my 1972 Z car!!!

Help, looking for door mirrors.
I am looking for a set of period (1972 240z) correct "factory accessory door mirrors". The mirrors were installed at the dealership and included in the "factory accessory brochure" at the dealerships. They were cast "pot" metal, had rectangular mirrors and were bullet shaped. They came in black and were usually painted to match the car prior to installation. I have seen them from time to time on ebay. Does anyone know of a source for these mirrors? JLP
