OT - I can't wait for cold weather
Since some of you are suffering winter's wrath, here's my favorite thing to do when cold winds blow. Victor's mulled apple brew. Or Three days of bliss and a month of spread Before going to bed on a cold winter's night In your largest cook pot, 2 gallons of apple juice. add several apples and pears, quartered, peel and all. 5 ~ 6 cinnamon sticks. 5 ~ 8 cloves 1cup of rum On the stove at the lowest possible flame. uncovered In the morning you wake up to a fantastic smell, it may even effected your dreams. ladle into cups - Yum! Keep it on the flame. afternoon - yum! Before bedtime, ladle it into cups and add a little rum to the cups, night, night! Next morning - ditto oo o o oo oo oohhhh Getting a little low? Add another gallon of juice. You didn't drink all of it, after all. Quite a bit has flavored the entire house. In three days, I've usually had enough. NOW, here comes the fun part. Get some very clean jelly jars. And turn the flame on high. Stir - stir - stir, the witche's brew thickens, The fruit has dissolved, only the cinnamon sticks remain. Stir till it's very thick and bubbling. CAREFUL! It's hot . ladle the thick Apple butter (That's right) into the jelly jars. After cooling, wrap a couple of jars up in a festive manner and give them to your neighbors (ONLY IF YOU REALLY LIKE THEM!). Be sure to have at least 2 jars in your on fridge. It's not uncommon for your sneaky neighbors to dress one of their children up in there Sunday best and send them over to your house with the empty jar to ask "Please Sir, Could we have some more"

Rattle
Fix the bad countershaft bearing. Sorry. I do have an aftermarket "8-Ball" shift knob that absorbs the noise. Our stock knobs start singing as soon as the tranny wears a bit thin.

Air Dam - Installed
Point well made, Ed. I'm thinking of using an "L" shaped metal bracket from the center grill support to the top of the spoiler. I'll take photos.

Tom, I don't care for bumper overridders (the vertical pieces). I've taken them off of ever Z and Roadster I've had. They were a "band aid" patch to meet US safety requirements. I can't see how our flimsy bumpers could have anything to do with safety to begin with! I'm not happy with this bumper either. I'm looking for a Euro bumper, or, I might get one of my spares rechromed and all the holes filled. Your secondary horizontal bar is a vintage dealer and aftermarket add on by AMCO, who made accessories for Datsuns.

Air Dam - Installed
I don't Know! I was planning on buying the same style in fiberglass, from MSA. But, My local Z shop, Sunset Z, Had this used, but in good shape, urethane one for $50.00. Since I would have to paint either one, I decided to save some money. Worked out fine.

Air Dam - Installed
Thanks Rick! I washed it just to take this photo! Really the car has come so very far since I bought it, 7 months ago. It really helps having just parted out my first 72 in having a spare everything! I was able to select the best condition part. So, the hood was replaced, as the original had a bent tip, The grill (the IPO painted it green!), The turn lenses as the old ones were very fogged and the inner reflectors were rusted, and the bumper as this one is much better than the bent one that came on the car. That's just the Front! you should have seen the rear!!! :surprised :stupid: But, I've got the serious case of "Z Love" now. I get so freaken happy as I walk up to her in the parking lot and after every drive, I pat the dash and say "Good Girl!" Anywhere else those statments would be received as strange. But here, I know you all can relate!

From what you described, It's long past out!

Tuners
I can't for the life of me see how these kids could possibly have the money they sink into these cars! In my town, Late model Acuras with at least $20K of bolt-ons are driven by 16~20 year olds! How can this be? At that age (in 1977), I had a job, a 68 Dodge Polara that I bought from my Father for $50.00 and could just - JUST - afford gas and insurance. Where did I go Wrong?

Tach for later 79-81 electrical distributor
Eric, Just like Steve, I have the "Match book" Nissan EI Distributor, With the Balast circut bypassed and a 12 Volt coil in my 72. The fellow that rebuilt and recurved the distributor for me (Gary Boone) warned that I MIGHT have a problem with the tach. But After installation, No problem. Then, when I scapped my first 72, I swapped the whole set up into the new Lime Green 72 and still had no problem.

Removing Heater control panel??
I must admit, when I first did this job I considered using this method - for about 10 seconds! Then I changed my mind and figured It was much better to release the cables. I've got three or so heater/radio panels downstairs, hanging from the ceiling by the cables like spiders.
-
Removing Heater control panel??
Enrique, That's what I'm talking about. Not taking the panel apart! I guess I wasn't clear? The 90 degree screwdiver is for the heat control lever. Since the blower housing in so close, It's the only thing I found to get at the screw. The other three are pretty easy.

Removing Heater control panel??
You'll have the best opportunity to lube the heater cables and control sliders! Use some Teflon spray cable lube (SuperLube?) from a bike store and some white lithium grease for the slider mechanism. And when your finished - SMOOTH OPERATOR! The 90 degree screwdriver is a $3.00 affair from pepboys or Kragans or where ever! the best ones are the ratcheting ones from Craftsman. Be sure to use some penetrant juice on those screws before you try to tackle them. Don't want to strip out the Phillips slots! Hopefully they didn't cut up the radio faceplate for the old radio install! Most times they did, and it just about ruins any plans to go back to stock. This wasn't a concern for me, replacing a Radio-Shackup cheapy with the fancy-smanzy JVC!

Removing Heater control panel??
It's not too hard really. You'll want to have a 90 degree screwdiver. Release all four control cables. 2 on the passenger side, then the other 2 on the driver's side. I'm close to 300 pounds myself and can get to the cable clamps pretty well. It's a ten minute job.

anyone know the name of the style....
Here they are on my roadster - http://public.fotki.com/datsunvic/new_shots/autocross_roadster.html Here's a set of 13'' on a 510 http://public.fotki.com/datsunvic/new_shots/ar_vector_mags_with_caps.html At just a little less than 11 pounds a piece for the the 14's, they really are a great wheel.

anyone know the name of the style....
If you mean these http://66.179.41.42/gen1/general.html Those are American Racing Vectors. I have set of 14X6's that I use for Auto-Cross wheels on my roadster. Since they fit the Z as well, so much the better! I'm looking for the center caps. If any one sees a set, please pick it up for me!!

New Glove box Installation
I'm interested in buying a new glove box. My interior looks so good now, that I would hate to open the glove box and have someone see that torn up mess. Can they be installed without disassembling a bunch of dash components? It woul be very cool if it just slides in from the front. Can someone give me the steps invovled?

Buying a 240z..
I've got to reinforce what AlfaDog had to advise. Buy the best dam Z you can possible afford! Be ready, willing and able to WALK AWAY from a deal when the Z doesn't meet your criteria. Inspect any canidate thoroughly! If only I had taken this advice on my first Z! I thought I had a winner - I ended up parting that poor rust bucket out not even a year later! Leason learned. My latest 72 is the result of taking these rules to heart.

Air Dam Advice
I want an Air Dam! But I don't wany to glass it into place. What I'd like is a fiberglass model that replaces the sheet metal piece, using the same mounting bolt locactions. I like this style in particular. Any suggestions?

Truck wheels?
>OzLime240Z Wrote - And the Pontiac GTO - Australians love RWD cars. Especially when it's an Aussie Car! Pontiac GTO = Holden. You gotta love those f'n Holdens! a long history of Big V8 power mongers! There's only two contries in the world who would make cars like the Holdens.... The U.S. and Australia! No wonder we get along so well. Hmm, Maybe I should change my online name to Calilime240Z!

Tires??
I had a good time with Khumo VictorRacers (I liked the name as well) 205/55/14's. they lasted well and stuck like crazy. Driving them regulary on the street is not a very good idea though. I ended up cracking them straight across the face. And they have a VERY stiff sidewall, which makes them a uncomfortable touring tire. But for AutoXing and mountain-road-craziness, there may not be a better tire.

Questions on 240 Z
Michael, You can commision a restoration from a top shop, like PierreZ or CDM or others. Be prepared to spend 25,000 ~ 30,000 though. Or you can by a previously restored Z from 17,000 to 22,000. As you can see, our cars are labors of love and will be upside-down on the value end of the deal. Now, if it we owned big Healys, We'd spend 40K on a restoration and have a 40K car afterwards. Too bad we wouldn't be able to actually drive it though! Value is subjective. Your car is worth exactly how much you love it. That is until you go to sell it! Selling is a sin anway. Build your Z and insist that they bury you in it!

I'm new -what does ZED mean?
Left-handed cars are Zee's Whilst the right handed varity are Zed's No, wait that's not right either, Canadian cars are also Zed's. Ok, so it not that simple. I live in Los Angeles and I drive a 1972 Datsun 240Z (Zee). My buddy from Ontario comes over and tells me I've got the bitchen Zed. Which ever pronunciation you choose to use, Drive your Classic Datsun Sports car with the joy that only a Datsun Sports nut can understand, no matter what the language!
