The Long Road Home
Sean - Glad to hear your trip back to Cold Lake was uneventful. Thank you for sharing the scenery with us...and I second Ron regarding your pictures. Marc and Jeff pass on their regards. GWGarrard

Installing headlights
Once you get the headlight bucket out, you'll see the light itself is held in by a metal ring with 3 small phillips screws....lossen the phillip screws, twist the ring carefullyand remove old headlight. Replacement is the reverse of removal... GWGarrard

Need thoughts for paint scheme...
For a plain white 240 - see Savannah Z's gallery... http://www.classiczcars.com/photopost/showgallery.php?cat=500&page=1&ppuser=6958 I'm sure there are others members with white Zs as well.... GWGarrard

2+2?
Mim - Speak of the 2+2 as the "family Zed". When our son was big enough ride in the 240Z he started to claim the passenger seat as "his" which pushed my wife out, so when we wanted to travel (with the Zed) we needed to take 2 cars. Solution was to find a 2+2. So now we have 2 Zed's...the "family Zed" (280ZXT 2+2) and the "toy" (72 240Z). Works out great because now I have 2 to play with. Mechanically they are the same, and parts are interchangeable. GWGarrard

spindle pin removal needed for spring/strut removal?
I was just discussing this same topic on the phone last night with a fellow club member here in Ottawa. We agreed that the process is to also disconnect the half-shaft, brake line, etc, and you should be able to swing the whole strut assembly out from the wheel-well. (I remember using a big persuader bar to get it past the fender lip). GWGarrard

Working on Floor Pans
Jimmy - Looks to me that you're on the right track...and with the help of EarlyZed's photos, you should be fine. Best luck to you. GWGarrard

I found a stray wire, help!
Looks like a ballast resitor of sorts, but those are usually found on points distributors....I tried to download the wiring diagram from the Carfiche.com site, but the 280ZX diagram is currently off-line. I'll try to remember to check my ZXT when I get home. GWGarrard

How to get better fuel economy?
Bob - I'm in no way a reformed driver - In the winter I will let my car idle for a couple of minutes before driving off, and I certainly don't shut down at a traffic light...but the proposed by-law did make me take notice of my commute more. (I get the best gas mileage with my Z when I leave it at home and drive the commuter... ) GWGarrard

How to get better fuel economy?
Bob - The City of Ottawa tried to bring in a "no idle" by-law this spring...where anybody letting their car idle for more than 10 seconds could be ticketed... Of course it didn't pass - but how long do you sit at a traffic light waiting for it to turn green?? I bet I spend at least 5 minutes of my short (40 minute) commute sitting at traffic lights... After replacing all front bushings . .
Did they adjust (loosen) the tension compression rod on the right side to allow it to fit the control arm when they installed the bushing backwards? Check the "free" length of the left side rod versus the right side - they should be the same... Just a thought... GWGarrard

Working on Floor Pans
Jimmy - In previous discussions on this we had suggested you get replacement floor pans from either MSA or Charlie Osborne of Zedd Finding. Have you followed thru on this? The replacement pans are obvious in their fitment...although you might have to extend them at the front end with extra sheet metal. GWGarrard

Mud guards? Yes or No?
Ed - My neighbour runs an auto detailing business and sells a 3M product that he applies to hoods and front ends on customer cars to save the paint. Don't see why you couldn't apply it to the rocker panels. It's a clear tape that they cut to fit, and apply directly to the panel. Just a thought... GWGarrard

Tokico Springs and Shocks
Hayden - I have the Tokico HPs on my ZXT 2+2, but with Eibach springs, and am very pleased with the results. I do recall encountering the same concerns about fitment on the 2+2 model, but decided to try anyway. I purchased my setup from Charlie Osborne of Zedd Findings, because he is local to me, but I believe he sourced the parts from MotorSports Auto. GWGarrard

daily driver
Andy - Yes, there are sunshades that "screws" into the frame of the glass t-tops....without them you can feel the sun, even here in the Great White North. I leave the shades in, and rarely even remove the t-tops on my ZXT (use the A/C). Be advised the back seat of a 2+2 is pretty small (even for my 10 year old son). There should be no reason to fear the automatic... GWGarrard Osgoode ON, Canada 72 240Z (toy #1 - needing some TLC) 83 ZXT 2+2 (toy #2) 00 Altima SE (daily commuter)

240Z Race Car Up for Auction
I agree with Carl Beck's suggestion that the seller probably used a spare set of tail lights. The VARAC G70 rules read "the vehicle must be in as near to original condition as possible"...and given the scarcity of these cars at events up here, I doubt they would have issue with a set of tail lights. Just my thoughts... GWGarrard

pics of z car with nice rims please!!
Rahail - I would suggest that white is an excellent colour to show off any wheel design you choose, and agree with Gary that wheels are all in the eyes of the beholder... I skimmed through the wheels gallery here on site and didn't find many white Zed's, but that just confirms that your car is special. Enjoy the challenge in finding something you like... GWGarrard

Spring has sprung.....
Sailor Bob - Same as 350ZX, I have Eibach springs with Tokico HPs on the 280ZXT and am very pleased with the results. I experienced the same HOE issues as you but with KYB gas-justs struts...sold the struts and stock springs to an acquaintence who actually appreciated the increased ride height because of the dirt roads he drives. Charlie Osborne of Zedfindings sourced my purchase for me. GWGarrard

VIR HPDE Photos
Mark - If you could see your way to come up to Kingston on the 25th of May to cover our track day at Shannonvile I would be much obliged:classic: Having your expertise behind the lens would certainly raise the bar for us (no offence to our local camera buffs intended....:nervous: ) Excellent photos as always....thank you for sharing GWGarrard

Buyers Guide?
Roy - Rust areas to look for are: floor pans, frame rails, battery tray, rocker panels, dog-legs, lower fender skirts...etc especially if the car saw winters in the salt belt. Most desireable model/engine is personal (240, 260, 280). Electrical / mechanical particulars - everything you should expect for a 30+ year old car....especially one that has been sitting for a long time. Parts availability is what I consider good but some speciality parts are disappearing...many years parts are inter-changeable, but it's not like the american pony car market...nor are the prices. Replacing the automatic with a manual is not a horrendous undertaking, if you are mechanically inclined. Good luck GWGarrard

Ontario Z-Car annual swap meet.
Zak - Greg might have to clean the shop a bit if Import models are expected....and maybe build a cage to keep the lumber jackets back.:cross-eye . Cash sales might suffer too, because we'd be distracted from the parts tables. But....you never know....probably get more TIZCC members to make the 4 hour drive... GWGarrard

Ontario Z-Car annual swap meet.
WingZro - No import models are expected, unless you count the un-shaven, burly boys in worn-out red and black checked lumber jackets. It's a swap meet hosted by a local Datsun performance shop in Toronto. Several of us from the Thousand Island Zed Club attended last year and had a blast (we were the unshaven, burly guys in lumber jackets...) Unfortunately, I can't attend this year - but hope to make it next year. Zak and Ron....enjoy the day - hope it doesn't rain like it did last year. Regards Gordon Garrard TIZCC

Caravanning
Rick and Jack - Towball downweight is commonly referred to as "tongue weight" here....representing the maximum downward load the hitch "should" support... As Jack notes it's usually 10% of the maximum trailer weight ratings.... I've never towed with my Z but I don't want even start thinking of some of the overloads I pulled when I drove a tow truck during college...These days I restrict my towing to my van which has a 160kg tongue weight rating... No Pradas around here...but lots of 4Runners (4 & 6cyl)/Pathfinders etc...and full size 4x4 SUVs or pickups...few are diesel. GWGarrard Ottawa, ON, Canada
