260 Stuck at the body shop!
Did they wash the car? Wet contacts, check the fusible link spade connectors, bring another battery, push start it.

Neutral switch in 4-speed.
I have a 280Z which had a top gear switch originally. The switch turned on the vacuum advance in top gear (4th) for better economy and reduced emissions. This trans is an early 4 speed (probably 72) and the FSM points to the switch as a neutral safety switch. However, none of the wires of my harness (from an automatic car) can reach it. If in fact Nissan included a neutral safety switch in the early manual trans, there must be some early Z's out there that will not start when the shifter is in gear. No?

Magnetic spoiler attachment
They may very well hold, but if it flies off and hurts someone, you will be liable. Especially if you didn't make all attempts to secure it right. I think my WRX rear wing actually has a tether cable, inside the trunk lid, that picks up a mounting bolt. I don't have a spoiler on my Z for the exact reason that I don't want to drill holes and I won't trust tape.

Magnetic spoiler attachment
Yeah if you do this, try to run some kind of tether from the spoiler to a bolt on the hatch...just in case.

One step improvements
EDIS will shoot a strong spark at least 3" long. I run it on my turbo 280Z with MSII. Its not a good ignition system, it's great.

Antenna Poll Question
There is always this option. A black power antenna. http://www.amazon.com/Hirschmann-W0133-1616985-HIR-Power-Antenna/dp/B001G66ECA Not sure if it fits in a Z but you can probably find a black one that does. ;-)

1978 280z gas tank sending unit
In the sender I had, the windings had gotten loose and the wiper was catching on the windings. I used cyano-acrylate CA glue, like crazy glue, to put a layer down over the windings. This bonded the windings to the board and fixed them in place. Then I sanded the top of the windings lightly to re-expose the metal. I tested it afterwards and it worked smoothly and accurately. The CA "should" hold up in fuel. We will see, as I get the car on the road this Spring.

One step improvements
I have done so many upgrades that I can't even remember all of them. Here are some one hit wonders that I highly recommend. The biggest "single item" improvements came from: -Poly rack bushings. -Performance tires. -Proper Brake pads/shoes. -ZERO degrees of front toe for cornering. -Replacing rusty frame rails. -Front strut tower bar that ties to firewall. -Sway bars, struts springs, bushings..etc -Advance the ignition a few degrees. -Side Gap the spark plugs. (look it up on google, it works great on a Z) not indexing. -front airdam -Ron Tyler differential mount -smaller sport steering wheel -removed 84 pounds of bumper from the 280Z. -added AC compressor switch to allow turning on compressor in fresh air/defrost modes. Neutral switch in 4-speed.
The reverse switch is near the filler plug up front passengers side, I found that one. This switch is up near the shifter, passengers side. It's out of reach of any factory harness wires. Then again my harness is for an auto so I am not surprised.

Neutral switch in 4-speed.
I "think" my 4-speed has a neutral switch in it, up near the top plate, by the shifter. I "think" it's a neutral switch because it's there in the right spot for one, but not actually working. It does not change state in gear or neutral. It's open all the time. So: 1) The switch is probably bad. 2) Was it used to inhibit the start circuit unless in neutral? 3) What years was it used in the 4 speeds? 4) My 72 car is wired with a 72 automatic harness, should I tie the neutral switch wires from the harness to this switch, when I fix it, if i want the inhibit to function? Thanks! PS: I just ordered a 72 wiring diagram from ebay because the FSM one is :stupid:

Me3!! Anyone? I am looking for part #13 also.

72 Center Console Connections??
I just had a revelation! This car was born as an automatic. It has an automatic harness in it. That explains a lot.

72 Center Console Connections??
I have not yet run the car. It has no engine or engine bay harness yet. The steering column was out of the car so they may have removed the flasher. I will look for it or get a new one. Good call, I hope those are the wires for the flasher unit. The hazard switch and the brake switch and all the relays and other doo-dads are all connected with "factory" connectors. It looks like everything is already connected. Except for what I showed above...which I can't ID yet. Maybe they are just meant to dangle. Don't forget, there is no radio connected. Some of those dangles may be radio related, and ORIGINAL console related. Since I don't know what the ORIGINAL console was wired like, or what functions were in the ORIGINAL console, I can't tell. I bet the PO removed the key buzzer. Here is a good shot of the pedal area. Here is where the engine harness will connect.

72 Center Console Connections??
With an inch of sheet ice over my driveway, and more salt on my road than the Dead Sea...I doubt it!

72 Center Console Connections??
Bingo. Exactly what I was thinking. When I bought the car, there was no passenger belt and there was a drivers side lap belt. I think I can find the correct defroster wires under the dash and "make" them work. Same will have to go for the choke light, which will be choking the triple Webers. I will "make" it work. I am not the type to just shut my eyes at unknowns; which is why I am here. I look at this research as an opportunity to get more intimate with my new car. I used my pocket camera tonight and shot about a bazillion photos up under the dash and everything looks factory. No strange wiring gremlins under there. Here are my leftover connectors from the radio area. Four unknown bullet connectors near the column.

72 Center Console Connections??
Yes I think I figured out where the Defroster (3-wire) and the choke lever (2-wire) connectors from the console go (shown in the manual vaguely). Now the 4-wire is a different story. Since it is NOT in my car and it's NOT in any manuals (70-74), I am guessing that it might be for the seat belt circuit. Which is also not shown in any manual. The wiring IS however drawn into the large diagram. My car contains no wiring to the seat belts or seat switches, so by rule of elimination... I am tempted to connect the battery and start tracing and testing things. But first I need to install the engine bay harness.

72 Center Console Connections??
NEW QUESTION: Is there supposed to be a "sub-harness" for the seat switches and seat belt switches? Where is it supposed to connect on the dash or body harness? There is no mention of such a sub harness in the manuals. There is wiring shown for it in the wiring diagrams though.

72 Center Console Connections??
Well you have already been a huge help. That is the connector I am looking for! Unfortunately it's not in any of my harnesses under my dash...so I think. The wires on the console side of my connector are red, red-blue, black, green. The search continues tomorrow.

72 Center Console Connections??
I am almost positive that something is amiss. A-missing that is. I have all the wires exposed under the HVAC controls and there is no trace of a connector to match. Maybe a sub-harness or something??

72 Center Console Connections??
The four pin plug I am holding is attached, to the center console. It feeds one of the functions of the console (seat belt, defrost, or choke light). What I cannot find is the male pair of the plug under the dash. I will call out the wire colors in a few... Do wire colors usually carry through the connectors?
-
72 Center Console Connections??
I will document all the colors and trace them back when I get a chance. Maybe tonight after shoveling the snow.

Who else is SNOWED IN?
I welcome snow....for some reason it keeps going North or South of me this year. I say, "Snow big, or get out of the way and let the Summer in." Hoping for at least 12" tonight and tomorrow!!

72 Center Console Connections??
I am a little relieved because I don't see the FOUR PIN SQUARE connector in this diagram either. But I am still miffed!! Where does the FOUR PIN connector, connect to? If it is for the seat belt light, would there be a connector down to a seat switch????

72 Center Console Connections??
I have the FSM from your site. I have been looking at the wiring diagram....I'll look in the BE section to see if I can ID connectors.

72 Center Console Connections??
OK I am working on my 72 and the electrics seem relatively un-molested. I pulled out the aftermarket radio and the center console. I removed a couple splices and wire twist jobs that were obviously "aftermarket". The rest looked very clean with a lot of unused spades, bullets, and connectors. Dillema: When I removed the center console, the three connectors were already unplugged. They were: 1) Four Pin square layout (defrost/belts?) female 2) Flat 2-pin 2wire (choke lever) 3) Flat 2-pin 3-wire (belts/defrost?) For the life of me, I cannot find the mates for all of these in the fusebox area or anywhere behind the HVAC panel. There are plenty of receiving connectors for the flat 2-pins (#2 and #3), but I can't make a wire-color match-up. There is NO connector to receive the Four Pin connector (#1) from the console. Any clues? Pics? Where to look? Wire color hints? I am studying the wiring diagram but it does not seem to show minor connectors. The dash, console, and dash harness all seem to check out as authentic 72 units. My spare 73 dash with 73 harness has the Four Pin connector. I checked. PS which wire(s) goes to the trans for reverse? :stupid: Console Connectors Choke connector: MY OPTIONS:???
