78 280Z Troubles
Sounds to me like the pump is working fine and trying to do it's job. What it sounds like to me is maybe the Thermotime Switch went haywire. Have you tested that? The Thermotime Switch is what provides ground for the Cold Start Valve when the coolant temp is below a certain degrees. Once the engine coolant temp goes ABOVE a certain degree, the Thermotime Switch will break the ground for the Cold Start valve which then obviously kills the Cold Start Valve. The Cold Start Valve is only suppose to operate during cranking and when coolant is below a certain degrees (sorry can't remember off the top of my head what the exact temp. degree is) My guess is the Thermotime Switch isn't breaking the ground for the Cold Start Valve when it's suppose to and it's injecting the extra fuel when it's not needed which will cause your symptoms above because it's getting way to much fuel when it's warmed up and causing it to flood severely. That would be my guess Best of luck

280Z Bumpers
"Ummm...I really would rather not put ZX bumpers on it...is that even possible?" That would be a big hell NO LOL I have to agree with sblake. Since the previous owner already did the conversion, it would be easier for you to just get another one off a early 260Z thats in good shape.

oil change
Ahh the oil debate Correct, You will get no argument from me that Synthetic is the best out there. However, if your Z has high miles and has always used regular oil in the past then you want to stick with regular oil. Why? Synthetic will loosen any old sludge build up which can result in major engine problems. As for weight, that depends on which climate you live in. I'm in Minnesota so I use 10W30. Works great. 20W50 is VERY thick and is only needed in places like Arizona. Your getting ready to store yours for winter just like I have to do in MN. so you must be in the cooler climate like me. I would recommend the 10W30. Brand? Everyone is partial to a certain brand so you'll get tons of suggestions on that I personally am a Valvoline guy. I use there full synthetic (SynPower) in my daily driver and regular Valvoline in my Z because It's pleasure driven. I personally get nothing but the best for my Z so I always use a Genuine Nissan Oil Filter. The filter is a very important part for the engine and is definitely worth spending the extra $$ on a good one. My two cents

Is this the best way to get to kill rust?
Best way to kill/prevent rust? POR15 is the best out there. Go to there website and take plenty of time to read it and learn about it. LOT'S of good information there that should answer just about any questions you may have about it. Here is the link: http://www.por15.com/faq.asp

What is the most attractive part of a Z?
What is the most attractive part of a Z? Gee where to begin? I love the looks, performance, quality engineering, the way the Z handles on the road, interior style like the awesome instrumentation. I could go on and on

Z Still not starting
Yeah, just like I thought Keep that battery disconnected man. Your asking for a fire every time you connect those cables to the battery. I'd quit playing around with the electrical wiring with the battery CONNECTED. Your not only increasing the odds of causing an electrical fire and risking having your Z catch fire but your also putting YOURSELF at risk of injury. Go through and Inspect that whole harness and find the problem and get it corrected WITH THE BATTERY DISCONNECTED. from the way it sounds (sizzling and smoking) that engine room harness won't be repairable and will have to be filed in the trash. Again, good luck and be safe Congrats on purchasing your FSM. You'll be damn glad you have it.

Did you even read my response???? I think it's more than loose connections If you don't have a FSM for your Z then I'd highly recommend getting one. The Factory Service Manual is the one and only book for the Z when it comes to working on it. Don't wast your time looking at haynes or chiltons manuals for a good electrical diagram. Youll find them disappointing. When you were playing with the climate controls and trying to get the car to stay running, I hope you had a fire exstinguisher at hand :nervous:

MSA Air dams???
If I do decide to get it which I more than likely will, It will be a project for next spring. Our nice weather is getting numbered here in MN. and it won't be long before I have to tuck her away for winter  When I do it, I'll for sure post pictures. Urethane- May flex and change shape over time? Fiberglass- cracks easy if you tap ANYTHING??? gggrr which one to choose???? I suppose I won't be able to use ramps anymore to work under the front if I do get a air dam Which will kinda suck because I use my ramps to get the front or rear up so I can get my floor jack to fit underneith. Guess I'll have to get a couple bottle jacks Thanks again all.
-
MSA Air dams???
Yeah, thats why I want urethane too. So how do they go on? Do they line up with the current holes? Or do you have to do some customizing?
-
MSA Air dams???
Cool. thanks Which one do you have on yours Mike? Fiberglass or urethane? Looks nice.

Z Still not starting
"i could smell what i thought where wires or plastic burning" "when i hotwire the pump the car will flash, then die again" Sure sounds like an electrical issue to me. Must have been a short somewhere in the wiring which caused this. My opinion to you would be to go through all the electrical wiring and inspect it to find the damage and correct it. I know it's easier said than done because it can be like trying to find a needle in a hay stack. Hopefully you have a FSM. to help guide you. Best of luck. Hope you get her running again soon.

MSA Air dams???
I've been debating about wheather or not to get one. The more I see this one from MSA with the brake cooling ducts, the more I think hhhmm that would look sharp on my Z They have this one in both fiberglass and urethane. Urethane is higher price because it's more durable I believe. Do they hold paint as well as the fiberglass??? I've heard it's better to have fiberglass if you want to paint them. True or False???

Sorta new member...
Yes, welcome to the site. I too have been to other Z sites in the past and this has been the best one I've found so far when it comes to staying on the Z topic. Some other sites I used to visit got destroyed by a select few using it as there personal I.M. I'm sure you'll enjoy it here

New CBS show will feature a '70 Z
"In real life, you have to lock the door when it's closed" You CAN have it locked and close the door at the same time. You just have to keep the handle lifted up. Try it.
-
New CBS show will feature a '70 Z
I figured they would get something wrong about the Z. Correct, you have to have the door handle lifted up while your closing it in order for it to stay locked while shutting the door or lock it with the key

Fuel pressure
The Fuel Pressure on a stock 280Z EFI System should be around 36 PSI @ idle.

Should I do it?
I think what Rob is trying to say is where is the money coming from at age 12 to restore a Z??? Hell you can't even drive yet However your doing it, more power to you. It's just unusual to see a yung fellow your age doing a restoration with no financial help. The Z, like any hobby is not cheap.

Z's and Snow
DON'T DO IT. The road salt will eat up your Z. If you love your Z, you will Park it for winter. I live in MN. and I usually have to tuck my little one away in mid Oct. before the sh!t flies. Depressing time of year for me :disappoin :disappoin

New Owner! Yay!
Well if you want stock ones then you will have to go visit the junk yards. The down side with that is the ones in the junk yards are pretty brittle already and will break when you try to remove them no matter how careful you are. SOMETIMES you get lucky though. MSA has just recently came out with an alternative to the stock ones. They will have to do if you can't find any good used factory ones. They want $124.95 for them though  Here is the link if your interested- http://www.zcarparts.com/store/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=30-7090&Category_Code=7BSA
