That sounds like a fuel filter clogging up to me. I know you say that you replaced it, BUT after I read "I am the original owner of my 1978 280z, though set it to rest in 1996 and started restoring it last year in March of 2007. It's been fun and still on going..." This tells me that it sat for 11 yrs. so what more than likely happened is during its "rest" that gas in the tank got very old and crappy, plus possibly a little rust inside the tank with moisture so even though you replace the filter and clean the lines, this "crud" in the tank is breaking loose and constantly clogging stuff up and creating this issue your having. It just makes all too much sence. Then once you have the car off for X number of minutes, she is fine again because the junk has settled, but once the flow stirrs stuff up again when the car is running, then it starts blocking the flow up again which results in poor idling, or killing the motor. Sounds like a new fuel tank is in order, or have it professionally cleaned internally. Just simply draining out the old fuel doesn't cut it. As for that additional fuel filter, it's a small one located at the inlet side of the fuel pump. For sure replace that as well. Hopefully the crap hasn't clogged the injectors Anyway those are my thoughts.
  2. Come on man. At least you have nice weather this time of year in AZ. to go play or work on your Z. If anyone has the right to b!tch, it's me. J/K My actual day Job and the personal crap keeps me plenty busy when I can't do anything with my Z or this site goes down. Seriously, it's no carnaval ride running and maintaining a site like this. It's like having a second Job just to keep a site like this up and running and updated so just take it easy and be patient when it happens. It always comes back
  3. That's correct. On a manual transmission model, 800 RPM's is where you want it to be @ idle. Yeah, it wouldn't surprise me that you might have a vac. leak or small fuel leak somewhere. you can do a visual inspection too for any possible vac. leaks. some are pretty noticeable. On mine, both A.F.M. boots were split wide open. Pretty obvious For checking the fuel system, it's best to perform a pressure test to start. The 280Z is suppose to maintain 36.3 PSI. Again, good luck with it.

Look on the left hand side of the page. You'll find Forums under main menu, click on forums and then it will show all the different forums like open Z discussion, suspension & brakes, ect. click on the one you want to start a thread on and on the top left corner you should see a button that reads "New thread" click on that and your set. It's really not as difficult as it sounds Oh yeah, welcome to the both of you

Are you talking about the lock nut that you have to back off to unscrew & remove the tie rod end? All that nut does is secures the tie rod end in the correct spot. You also use it to make the correct adjustments for alignment. once you have the opposit end separated from the knuckle arm, you back that nut off a little and you rotate the tie rod end in or out to get the correct toe in/out so the wheels don't sit like this / \ or like this \ / if that makes sence. I got the exact measurements written down to where they should be at when I did my ball joints and tie rod ends last spring/early summer. It was a while ago so I'd have to look around for it if thats what your wondering about?

I'd replace them with the proper fuel lines. My 2 cents.
  7. Do you notice a raw fuel smell when you do get it running??? You may have a minor fuel leak somewhere in the system which will also cause the symptoms your having due to loss in pressure not to mention very dangerous. Also another possibility is a vacuum leak somewhere. I remember way back when I first bought my Z it sputtered so bad, I could see the entire car just shake when idling in my garage. My Z had both the issues I listed above plus a few other things It seems like theres always bugs you have to work out on a new classic Z purchase. Any car really. Part of the fun of the hobby Good luck with it all and let us all know how everything turns out.
  8. kinfish, Looking at my Avatar and yours, our Z's look like twins. exept the differences between a 240 and 280 of course your windows are even tinted like mine.
  9. 70-78 (240Z 260Z 280Z) Z Cars are all 1st generation Z's so whats the confusion??
  10. Thats for sure a #1 choice for someone looking to restore a 1st generation Z Car. Not many like that.

Not me. I just hear other people complaining about it often

hmmm thats an odd part indeed. My 1977 doesn't have that. don't really see the need???? my best guess is maybe it was some sort of Kit Nissan added on as a dampner for people that complained about the common "Clunk" sound?? who knows.

Like others have said, chains last much much longer than the crappy belts. If the car was well cared for, the chain should last 200,000 without any issues, but it's cheap insurance to inspected them on a high mileage engine because they can wear out and "Stretch". You can adjust the tension if the the slack is minimal, but if it's to the point where it's excessivly worn & "stretched" and adjusting it won't help, then it needs to be replaced obviously. I won't buy a car if the engine uses a timing BELT  "I believe Nissan as well as other Manufacturers have gone back to timing chains in lieu of rubber belts." I sure hope so.
  14. Yeah, I had that same issue on my Z. I replaced it with a new Nissan Reverse lamp Switch from Courtesy Nissan and it solved the problem on mine. I love when it's something simple

Welcome to the site man. Congratulations getting into Z Cars. Zs-ondabrain is a great guy. I'm sure he's more than happy to help you out with your new Z project
  16. Or you could just add this feature to your Z LOLLOL http://www.hotrodsandclassics.net/FunnyVideos/openingtrunkmonkey5.htm
  17. I think a locking fuel cap should be a priority on the holiday gift list for your Z man With gas prices the way they are, fuel theft like that is going to happen more and more.
  18. Thats just the Wiper Blade Assembly there showing. I'm refering to the arms that the blade assembly connects to.
  19. Well mine is a earlier 1977 so that could be why.
  20. Are you sure? My stock 1977 has the steel ones.
  21. Looks like a clean project Z to fix up. Wonder what kind of condition the battery tray area, floor pans, rails, spare tire well, Cowl area ect. are in :paranoid: Thats what needs to be checked by whoever is interested.
  22. mgood, Looks like you painted yours to match the car. Looks good. I kept mine black and used a flat black. hung them in my garage over a weekend to cure and they turned out great.
  23. Arne is correct. In fact my Z has the mirrors that were used on the ZAP Z's and Black Pearls. The original owner of my Z had them put on. the thing is though they are damn hard to come by today unfortunately. When I bought my Z, the pass. side was missing the head (don't ask me how?) and I had a hell of a time finding another exact set. Finally located a set and bought them from a guy in NY. They were off his parts Z car and he had them all cleaned up and primed. He said "since they are unfinished, you can have them for the cost of shipping" :surprised I got very lucky.
  24. Datsun didn't put Pass. Door sideview mirrors on the 1st generation Z's. Only ones that did come with both driver and passenger side mirrors from the factory are the ZAP Z edition (1977) and the Black Pearl edition (1978) You can always add them though if you really want one. MSA has a pretty good selection of mirrors. (www.zcarparts.com)
  25. Holiday gift? Well I already got the parts and I won't be doing these repairs till next spring/summer being that she is in storage for winter but here is whats on my "To Do" list. -New Nissan brake pads with hardware kit -New Nissan Rotors -Inspect and repack front wheel bearings (New Nissan grease seals for hubs obviously ) -Installing New Nissan Water Pump (For piece of mind. Still has orig. 30 yr. old W.P. :nervous: ) - New Nissan Fan Clutch (again, Orig. 30yrs old so I just want to Cheap insurance IMO. ) - I have to look into a fuel pressure loss issue. I noticed towards the end of this past summer, she starts tough after sitting. I'm leaning towards the check valve, but will test to make certain. Anyway thats about it. Then of course the usual basic routine spring maintainance stuff. Just goes to show that even with a beautiful classic Z, your never done. Always plenty to do with just normal wear and tear stuff on a 30+ yr. old car. The holidays come during the spring/summer for my Z I won't get into the laundry list of stuff that I have already done to it. It's my hobby though and I enjoy every minute of it
