SN 00042 Restoration; The Older Twin
Guess I'll put it here as this is, at least to this old buzzard, the path of least resistance After almost 190,000 miles and a bit of bearing noise I decided to give the 5 speed in my 78 280 the business and @ the same time address all of the related issues. At the risk of glazing the eyes of my audience I promise to be brief. I had the rear engine plate powder coated - yes, I know it was clear zinc plated from the factory but I wanted to see what my very excellent powder coater could do and the results are very satisfactory - removed 4 pounds from the stock 24 pound flywheel, had the now lightened flywheel balanced along with a new pressure plate, replaced the rear engine seal, clutch assy - used the Exedy set for probably the 100th + time in my career - flywheel and pressure plate fasteners, ALL of the trans bearings, 2nd and 3rd gear syncros, seals and gasket and had all of the related fasteners, etc. zinc replated. This past Sat I drove the 350 mile round trip to Import Carlisle - touched 100 MPH for a couple of seconds - without a hint of concern. I got those trans parts I could from Nissan - yes, I know there are some cheaper alternatives but I like the guys at my fav dealer. Those bearings that are NLA from Nissan I got from a company in Japan, Amayma. They, Amayma, provide excellent service and excellent prices for parts in the original Nissan packaging. Way back in 1971 the dealer I was working for sent me to Datsun trans school. The school held @ Datsun eastern headquarters in Secaucus, NJ. The dealer provided me with a NEW, just off the boat, 510 2 door for transportation. Yes, a new 510 2 door was capable of an indicated 100+. We were provided lunch at what was, I'm confident, a mob owned restaurant. Our instructor told us we could order ANYTHING on the menu but if we wanted lobster we had to give one day notice. Those were the days.

Yes, those fuse links are actually mine - just haven't had time to update my site. Hell, haven't even taken a picture! Should probably get on that.

Where to start 1- Fasteners for air pump bracket to engine should be engine blue ditto alt mount fasteners 2 - Only right side motor mount bracket should be black - left should be blue 3 - Timing pointer should be clear not yellow ditto for the plate at front of cylinder head 4 - Freestanding female spade connectors should not have the lock tab NO CHARGE for the above but if you want a Gold Medallion in the stock 240 class I charge $500.00/day plus expenses

Ugh, that CAR!

Of course you're correct about the early style of Hood Height Adjuster as well as the lack of a gusset in that corner but the "Restoration(s)"? and ambiguity(s) when dealing with 69 production date cars make a lot of these issues impossible to confirm with the degree of certainty I'm comfortable with.

Whenever one posts anything on any site in the on line universe one runs a considerable risk that he/she will be challenged. My answer is "let's see you do better". If you can, I'm talking first hand , personal experience, and not something from another site somewhere, I'll be among the first in line to offer congratulations. You see, I don't have anything to prove to anyone save myself. This will be my last offering of this type on this site.

My attitude as a business man and human being is this - If you've been convicted of fraud I won't believe a SINGLE WORD you say! I'm just surprised that more don't have the same attitude. However, I'm certain that a sucker is indeed born every minute.

"Guild" can't even stand in Paul Taylor's shadow!

Anything connected to the "Guild" MUST be taken with a large grain of salt!

OK HS30-H you were indeed right. Also found some Witworth tools from my days servicing Rollers for the local club. Nice picture of Len's green car on my web site @ zzxdatsun.com. GAV240Z - when I made my comment about Gold Medallion Z cars I was referring to the scarcity of the NOS parts that one would need to be in the running for that trophy/award.

Good morning HS30-H. While I understand and respect the Japanese Industrial Standards as a member of the SAE I'm expected, no required, to reflect the prejudices of that organization. Do you know Len W? He lives near Tunbridge Wells. Currently he drives a red left hand drive 240. Cheers

I'd find it hard to believe that this poor chap had less than 80K invested in this 240. Perhaps he had to sell for any number of reasons. My romantic side would like to think it had to do with a woman/man. However, all of those chimers who were oooohhhhing and aaaahhhhing over this restoration and planning to use it as a model for their effort are and will be off by a country mile. I didn't spend too much time looking it over but a lot of his mistakes just jumped off the page at me. 1 - Lifting eyes should be clear not yellow 2 - The rule of thumb is that bolts with hex and Phillips heads are clear not yellow, ditto for machine screws. 3 - Too much use of yellow assembly marks. Not every suspension fastener got one. 4 - His yellow plating is flat and dull. I've had to reject my share of plating loads for this problem and then wait and wait for the plater to make things whole. That's the price one sometimes has to pay. 5 - Original, now brown, electrical connector housings. Damn, he had to remove the 5 wire connector for the wiper motor to fit my firewall grommet but what did he do - reinstalled the original! 6 - No detailing of the engine compartment wiring harness. 7 - Old original nasty looking rear window defrost connectors. Now for the good news 1 - He used my all but perfect engine paint and as per my instructions painted the right motor mount bracket satin black. Can't remember if the pan was satin black with yellow fasteners as it should be. An interesting detail that has intrigued me for a long time. Early cars, at lease until about 5-6 /71 perhaps a bit later, secured the heater and blower assys to the firewall using 6mm bolts - hex and Phillips head so they should be clear - with captive lock washers. After about that date or so they added non captive flats. My opinion about the future of Gold Medallion 240s. There will be almost none, if any, from here out. That's enough.

The market is soft, very soft. Let's see where the bidding falls on the blue with white 240 currently on BAT. Sorry but nothing to do with your astute observation Zed Head
