Is this a Datsun Competition Steering Wheel?
Yes that is a '78 steering wheel. Your horn button will unscrew from the rear and the mechanism will unscrew from the wheel along with the spring. It does not have that weird welded on mechanism like the one I posted pictures of. I challenge the keepers of Z minutiae to tell me if this is Nissan OEM (unless you...gasp! don't know)!

Is this a Datsun Competition Steering Wheel?
Well this is an interesting item then. I knew it was not a competition wheel because it did not look like the ones that were pictured online. I am just trying to figure out what it is. So now I have two owners (as well as the guy I purchased from) telling me that is was stock on their later era s-30 ZCARS. The thing is I have seen hundreds of s-30 ZCAR's "in the wild" (ready to strip that is haha) and I have NEVER seen a steering wheel like this one. The eras of stock steering wheels which I have seen follow; 70-71 240z; Imitation wood grain plastic wheel, solid spokes w/ a squared pattern within. Small horn button on a plastic mechanism. 72-73 240z; Imitation wood grain plastic wheel, holed spokes w/ an open squared pattern within. Small horn button on a plastic mechanism. 74-76 260z 280z Foam grip wheel, solid spokes with/ a rectangular pattern within, same emblem as on 240z steering wheels but on a larger button. Steering wheel button rotates off 3 mounting screws. 77-78 280z Same wheel as 74-76, horn button is different and attaches from the back with 3 screws. I have also seen a 240z steering wheel on a 77-78 280z with a special plate which looked Nissan OEM so that the 77-78 horn button could mount on the 240z mechanism. So that leaves this wheel which has a story to tell! Anyone?

Is this a Datsun Competition Steering Wheel?
I purchased this from a gentleman whom stated that this was stock on his s-30 ZCAR but... ...it does not look like the ones I have seen pictures of and there are no identifying marks on it. The horn button mechanism looks like Nissan design but no horn button is not helping the issue! It does have the faux leather w/ stitching on the grip (which is hard foam or rubber or something similar).

Late '73 240z Front Bumpers
Okay, I will definitely have to get pictures of this next one. Maybe I am approaching this from the wrong angle? How about early 260z's w/ 240z style rear bumpers and taillights? You may be on to something with an owner modification as well. Thanks, Daniel P.

Late '73 240z Front Bumpers
To clarify; the one I was up close to was a very late (11 or 12 / 73 240z) the other one I have not seen up close yet only at a distance. How do I know if it was from a distance? Simple, the solid rubber bumper guards characteristic of early 260z's matched with 240z style rear bumper and taillights was the giveaway.

Late '73 240z Front Bumpers
Carl, I'm definitely not imagining this. I removed one a coupla years back and there is another waiting for me in hopefully the next few weeks, ( I'll try to get pix). I have seen at least 2 late '73 240z's with early 260z (thin 240z style) front bumpers and matching mounts. Your response makes me assume that this was never a planned Nissan program because if anyone would know about it, it would most definitely be you. Thanks, Daniel P.

Did you get that from Craigslist in Simi Valley a coupla weeks back for the ridiculous low price of $400.00?

Late '73 240z Front Bumpers
Hello, I am sure this topic has been covered, I searched but came up with nothing, please forgive me. I have seen and I am sure others have seen as well, late '73 240z's with early 260z's (1.74-8.74) styled front bumpers with matching pneumatic mounts. My question is, was there a specific month that this took place, or was it a general swap toward the end of the period based on stocks of '73 front bumpers being depleted? Thanks, Daniel P.

n-42 Carburated Head
I was back at the owners place today and this is the head it was, an N-42 w/out the injector reliefs. I still didn't buy it ha!

n-42 Carburated Head
I think I misunderstood the seller. I will ask him what he meant by "a carburated n-42 head". It 's been a little while since I saw the piece in question and I cannot remember any details. As always, thanks for the input... BTW Zedyone, sweet engine and compartment....

n-42 Carburated Head
Hello, I was under the impression that n-42 heads were only used on 75-76 280z's with EFI. I came across one which was not drilled for injectors and expressly for use with carburators. Which vehicles were these made for?

Mystery Parts...
If I remember correctly I did have a locking gas cap that did break while mounted.

Mystery Parts...
That's f'in strange. Two weeks ago I dropped my tank off of my '76 and had the same two pieces in my tank as well.

Major Meltdown
I just did something like that. I thought I had an alternator w/ a non-functioning internal regulator so I replaced the whole unit. When I reconnected the battery both wires to the alternator started burning, there is a short under the dash somewhere. I created the problem by hacking my dash harness to bits in the course of a 16 year ownership of this vehicle. At first I was just going to part out all the goodies I have on the vehicle and buy another Z, but... ...this is MY Z darnit! I don't want another Z, I want mine! It just so happens I have another '76 280z dash harness, and the heater and A.C and all related hardware are gone from the vehicle. I found a guy who is going to replace the harness and wire all the aftermarket rice items I have in correctly, and he knows ZCARS so I don't think I could have found a better repair person. Theoretically I could do this repair but realistically I would rather pay someone else to. Good luck w/ your vehicle, all is not lost!

Bill introduced in Calif. to change smog exempt to '80
Hmmm, It would be nice if this passed as the smog exempt years rollback (or roll forward) has been stalled for quite some time. If I remember correctly every three years, the smog exempt "last year" was rolled forward by one year. The state stopped doing it at least 10 ( if not more) years ago. The last year of smog exemption has been on '75 for a while. It's probably been more as I remember looking forward to the day my '76 would be smog exempt and being let down and a little p.o.'ed that they stopped doing it. The upside has been that because I have to deal with smog testing every two years, I am limited into how many engine mods I can make, and in my case how much trouble I can get into because of them. BTW, good idea Arne about contacting our representatives, they do respond.

Old barn find 1970 240z series 1 in decent shape mfg date 2/70 lowest mfg month 907
2 in as many days of "too good to be true Z finds" by newly joined members w/ zero posts to their credit? I PM'ed the other one (2x 240's w/ low miles and NOS parts) about three times but have heard nothing in return. If it's too good to be true it probably is, but then... ...nothing is too unbelievable to not be true. I want to believe!!!!

Butterscotch dye or paint?
That's true which is why I have two pictures, one of the front of the panels (painted) and the other of the rear of the panels (unpainted OEM colored plastic) in the eBAY ad shot with the same camera (shutter speed etc.) and light conditions as they were taken seconds apart. So as conditions were matched as best as possible between the two pictures, color matching will be relatively easy to discern between the two pictures and not a third hand opinion of what the correct color is . None of the customers I have sold butterscotch painted panels to have returned a negative comment about non- matching paint either.
-
Butterscotch dye or paint?
Sorry, you're reading it wrong, the FRONT faces in that picture are both painted and the REARS of the panels (in the picture below where you found that one on eBAY) are not.

Butterscotch dye or paint?
Hello, I was in the same boat as you, I had a bunch of butterscotch plastic parts which needed painting. I went to a local paint store and had them mix me up a pint of some custom butterscotch paint from which they make spray cans. The original pint cost $30.00. So far I have gotten 4 or so cans from the original pint and I still have alot left. Here are the results; http://www.ebay.com/itm/250936769068?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649 Only the front faces have been painted, compare the color between the front and back and I would say it's a pretty spot on match. I need to do the same for some maroon panels as everything I am finding premade in cans has too much blue in it. Good luck, Daniel P.

Pricing 240z Rally Clock w/ Fully Functioning Oscillator?
You're absolutely right that I am hyping the item I have for sale. I've seen others hype their items here as well so I was under the assumption that it is okay. You asked me to respond to you concerning a clock sale before anything was ironed out and I was still testing the item and gleaning all possible data to make sure I had all my facts in place to the best of my ability. It is your prerogative to ignore this item and eBAYer. And it is my prerogative to not want to be burdened by the subjective expectations of a group.

Pricing 240z Rally Clock w/ Fully Functioning Oscillator?
Ron, 2c of someone who knows is worth about $10.00 of someone whom does not. I did revise my eBAY listing to contain some of the key points in your post above. Thanks, Daniel P.

naps for a 280z
Dig this complete NAPS intake from a 75 280z on sale on Craigslist in L.A. I know it's from a '75 280z because I saw it first at a salvage yard but did not pull it before this guy did. I had never even heard of these before seeing it firsthand. http://losangeles.craigslist.org/wst/pts/2476231797.html

Most definitely not getting into an online argument, have a safe and sane 4th of July! Bye! Blue, Thanks for that link but I will not be attempting any kind of repair if the clock needs it. Goodbye rare and valuable Z Rally Clock! Hello useless pile of microscopic clock guts and sick feeling of failure in pit of stomach! :disappoin Thanks, Daniel P.
