Sway bar linkage grommet compression?

Featured Replies

Replaced all rubber grommets on the sway bar system and was not able to reach specified Torque on the grommet connection rod. There are 4 grommets on each side. They became flat like a pancake. What am I doing wrong.

Thank

You are over tightening them IMO. The suspension needs to be under load before tightening them. Meaning the wheels need to be on a block to elevate the car. Then tighten the bolt until the rubber expands a bit over the washer. Personally I’ve never torqued these. Again my opinion.

I agree they're over tightened. The car was on the ground loading the suspension, but not on blocks. The manual is calling for 18-foot pounds of torque.

I'll check and see if they make denser durometer grommet. Then redo with the wheels on block of wood. Thank you

Most of the sway bar links I've messed with include a feature that limits the amount of tightening travel long before the bushings get all squished out like that. In other words... The nut usually bottoms out on the threads when the proper amount of bushing squish has been achieved.

It looks like the links you are working with have way more threaded length than necessary.
