Throw out bearing sleeve length

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Happy New Year.

New rebuilt engine with throw out bearing noise (knocking, rattle) with clutch in neutral (pedal out), clutch pedal depressed noise goes away.

L28 with a close ratio 5 speed (80-83) Non turbo car.

New action clutch, lighten fly wheel. I have all three length sleeve's (38,31,28 mm). The sleeve installed is the correct length for the trans (38mm) but maybe not the fly wheel circumference. Hoping someone has done the math.

Flywheel 15.24 cm Radius = 95.756 cm circumference.

Thank you,

If the clutch engages and disengages correctly then the length of the sleeve/collar is probably correct.

The bearing and collar ride on the nose of the transmission front cover. They are attached to the fork with a spring clip, and the fork is attached to the pivot ball with a spring clip. Kind of sounds like one of those attachement points is loose. Maybe you forgot a spring clip or didn't get it seated correctly. The spring over the fork pivot ball can be difficult.

Found a video with good pictures. Audio is bad though. Starts about 2:20.

All is new, fork, springs both , ball etc.. and all was intact when I removed the trans yesterday, nothing was lose or fell out of the bell housing.

Questioning the length of the bearing sleeve as there are different lengths and not sure of the math behind flywheel circumference = bearing sleeve length.

Thanks.

Did you install the pilot bushing in the end of the crankshaft?

This might already be in the back of your mind - with the clutch disengaged the transmission main shaft stops spinning. With it engaged the shaft is spinning inside the transmission. You might have a problem inside the transmission.

This might help you determine the correct colla for your pressure plate. I made it years ago, but never got round to posting it in the tech articles.
