I was wrong once ........... once!

satin-finished stainless steel is the factory part in my '72 240Z.

The ashtrays that are in the EARLIEST 240Z's (the ashtray mounted in the FRONT of the console near the fusebox) are black plastic. On these ashtrays, you flip the lid "up and forward" to open the ashtray.

Actually Carl, the VERY earliest 240Z's came with grey plastic ashtrays painted black by the factory.

I never carved mine up to check the interior of the material. The surface was black (inside the ashtray as well as outside) and that was all I ever saw. My car earliest Z was a early 71.

The factory sprayed only the outside top of the ashtray black. The insides and underneath were the dark grey color of the bare plastic. My car is a 11/69 build date.
