December 24, 200816 yr comment_269622 What kind of information are you trying to find? If you're looking for something like CarFax type information, it will be difficult. And does it really matter with a car that is 30 years old? December 25, 200816 yr comment_269624 Unlike the later cars with 17 digit VIN, the earlier VINs don't contain much info on the car. An 'H' is for the L24 (240Zs) or L28 (280Zs) motor, or an 'R' for the L26 in a 260Z. The 'L' is for Left hand drive, and 'S30' is the chassis type. (S30 is the Z body up through '78 models.) A 'G' at the beginning indicates a 2+2. The rest is just a sequential serial number. December 25, 200816 yr comment_269645 You won't find much info beyond that really. You can try looking at the paint code sticker on the upper radiator support to see what color it was originally. December 30, 200816 yr Author comment_269863 I'm looking for anything on my car. Its a 1977 280z stock 100% except the optium battery, fuel filter, plug wires and oil filter. It has been repainted to its origional color, and says it has 17055 miles on it. I'm not sure if those are original but my grandfather says as far as he knows they're. What kind of information can you find out with a vin #. It does start with a HLS. December 30, 200816 yr comment_269865 No, really, that's about it. Nissan didn't really keep any sort of records for these cars. I've never heard of them having any form of database of VIN's and configurations for each vehicle. Aside from general figures for how many Z cars were produced per year there isn't much else. What other kind of info are you looking for? It has a fuel injected L28 engine (N42 block), N47 cylinder head, 8.3:1 compression ratio, that kind of information? January 3, 200916 yr Author comment_270152 How much it's worth? Is it better to keep it stock or referbish it? It runs exellent, but the engine needs cleaned. IE. Water spots. Is there any way to find out the milage? 17055 seems low even though it has been parked a airforce base. As a new owner of a 280z. What's the best thing I could do?
