Turbo 240Z

Featured Replies

Is it possible to have a L28 with a turbo and use carbs?? I heard its possible but I'm not sure how it would work. Does anyone know??

I only have one thing to say.

Don't waste your time on a Carby Turbo. I'm sure you can get good results, but it is quite a difficult thing to get right for not a great power gain.... I think there are two ways using either a blow by or blow through turbo setup but I really can't remember the theory....

Cheers,

Ross.

BTW I'm pretty sure you'd need to use a webber or a holley as side draft carbs can't be used.

but very limited to what the carburetor can put out. its easier to do with fuel injection and worth the work.

i definetly wouldnt be doing a carbed turbo. its just not worth it.

Here's a pic of a carby turbo that was installed on the 225ci Slant six that came in Chryslers (Valiants in Australia and I think the same in US/Canada)

You can get a rough idea of what it looks like anyway.....

turboing a normally N/A engine is not an easy quick hp mod, there's a lot of other things you will need to get right and things break quicker. It would be easier to drop a turbo'd 280 engine in.

Had a friend try it once using a 2" SU of a Jaguar V12. Had nothing but trouble with turbo lag this was around 8 years ago though. In the end he scrapped it, we didn't use pop off valves at the time that may of helped.

Does this engine turboed and have carbs?? It looks like it has the Mikuni's but I'm not sure. Someone please tell me if I'm trippin.

You're Trippin' :sleepy: Easy mistake with that extra flaring for the intake but that's definately an injected engine, you can see the fuel rail just above the runners that do (I must admit) look like Mikunis.

Here's my old carby turbo zed.

Take the tip - go with EFI!! Carby turbo might sound cheaper, but you'll spend too much time and $$ dealing with detonation, ignition timing issues, oil being sucked out of the carbies.

If you must do it, cheapest options are big SU's in a suck through setup with water injection to try to combat detonation. I was getting around 140kws at the wheels - which made the zed run very quick - but I rebuilt it a couple of times due to detonation and other issues.
