What kind of 5-speed is this?

Featured Replies

The pics aren't great but I think it's out of an '81-'83 because it's got that little plate on top of it.

Any guesses, I may try to buy it if it is a later 5-speed?

Hard to tell from the picture, check out this link and it will give you the clues:

About halfway down the page.

I thought the small plate was an inspection plate that was only present on the early 5-speeds. maybe i need my medication, HAHAHAHAHA.

Looks like an FS5W71B. See Carl Beck's ID chart here:

This transmission looks the same as a 4-speed, so make sure it's a 5-speed.

Yeah, it's either a 4-speed or an early 5-speed from the looks of that attachment. Thanks for all the help.

One way to tell is that the later ones (81-83) only have one mounting ear back below the the shifter on the left side of the trans. The one in the picture you posted has two mounting ears back there and one of those is broken but it's definately an early trans.

That looks like a 4 speed. Check out my gallery here for the pics of the differences of 4 spd, early 5 spd and the late 5 spd.
