The problem is the flywheel keeps spinning when I try to remove the bolts. How do I prevent it from spinning whithout damaging it?

I used a bolt from the clutch and one from the starter. Then took a piece of metal (1/8th inch) with two holes in it (it was about 3 to 4 inches long) and screwed in one bolt to the flywheel then with the other hole I lined it up with the starter bolt and screwed it in. I didn't tighten the bolts all the way down. Then removed the fly wheel bolts one by one. This will keep it from spinning on you.

That's some good thinking there John. I'll ahve to remember that one when it comes time to build a new engine for my Z.

if you have access to an impact wrench there should be no need to do anything, they will break loose with out spinning the flywheel!

I have a 1" piece of 3/16 steel with a hole in one end and pointed on the other. I use it for taking the bolts out and torquing them back on. (use it on on the left side for removeal and the right side for torque) I just put a tranny mount bolt through the hole and stick the pointing end into the ring gear. I have a thick washer under the strap to get it lined up properly. I have had this mechanism for 30 years and it works great every time. (KISS) It also works for removing & torquing the front balancer on the crank.

This can be answered in two words: "impact wrench"

Now if you do not have access to one then this is a bit more difficult and the above advice should be considered.

Do you really think you can zip a bolt all the way out of a high-pressure pressure plate with a torque wrench. Gawd, I hope not! Can you say 'warp' or 'cracked'? Flywheel, no problem but watch out for the clutch cover!

hope this helped you and you got the flywheel off ok. I ended up having to do this about 3 weeks ago. This way is alot easier than trying to hold the flywheel with a long rod or something of that short.

I have always used a high torque impact wrench(Harbor Freight Thundersomething), and never had a flywheel get away from me...
