Posted June 15, 200420 yr comment_85168 I know that most of you guys probably don't have a video system in your Z especially a 240Z or 280Z and even a 280ZX.. but I figured hell, maybe I would be one of the first... I am currently working on a video setup for my 280Z and instead of spending $1,500 on a motorized flip up in dash DVD setup.. I am building my own setup using a widescreen 7" LCD screen and a mini DVD player underneath my seat. In order for the DVD player to send the Audio OUT signal to my CD player, the only way is if I had a AUDIO IN jack or input. This meant that I had to get a NEW CD player or headunit untill I came across something.... an FM Modulator.. pretty much what you do is plus in the the AUDIO OUT wires into the FM modulator which has an AUDIO IN RCA input. What this does is create's a signal and transmits the information over a radio frequency like at 88.7 MHz or 88.7 FM. This means that I can turn on my normal radio and turn to the radio station and I can listen to my DVD or whatever. So now the guys with the original tape tecks can have a CD player plus a DVD player play through the radio This total setup costs exactly $264.97 compared to a $1,500 indash setup. Also the DVD player can play DVD's, CD's, MP3's, VCD's, SVCD's and my favorite... this DVD player has a BUILT IN TV TUNER So I can actually watch TV on the LCD screen and through my speakers.. imagine watching the Simpsons while waiting for someone at a store or in a long line of drive through take out. So when I put everything together my electronics and gadgets in my car consists of : Kenwood Excelon Headunit (CD player) 4 - 4" inch Alpine Speakers 3 - 10" inch MtX Subwoofers MtX amplifier 650 watts Legacy LCD 7" widescreen moniter mini DVD player XBOX Kinda neat in a little Z Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/12212-anyone-have-a-dvd-video-setup-in-their-240z-or-even-a-280zxi-might-do-this-4-my-280z/ Share on other sites
June 15, 200420 yr Author comment_85169 Let me know of your opinions on this setup... should I mount an LCD in the dash board or glove box? or should I do a sunvisor LCD screen? or should I mount it ontop of the dash above the guages? NOTE: I will not have 3 monitors.. just a basic idea Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/12212-anyone-have-a-dvd-video-setup-in-their-240z-or-even-a-280zxi-might-do-this-4-my-280z/#findComment-85169 Share on other sites
June 15, 200420 yr comment_85172 Fm modulators... ever had one that worked well? I haven't ..... Some may be better than others, but most I've tried really haven't worked well at all, not enough juice to get the signal out or something. DVD player in the front seat? Why does this seem like a worse idea to me than driving and talking with a cell phone, just be careful. My only other comment is with the TV tuner... you'll either need a nice big antenna to get the local TV stations ( BIG Antenna ) or you'll need a hell of a long cable to plug into the cable TV in your house...Your whole setup is very do-able though, I'd find a way around the FM Modulator. Does the mini DVD player have a car adapter? June 15, 200420 yr comment_85177 Not on the dash, you'll ruin the beautiful lines of the famous Z dashboard IMO. Glove-box is my choice. Be like Monster Garage where the car must appear to be stock...........but is far from it:classic: Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/12212-anyone-have-a-dvd-video-setup-in-their-240z-or-even-a-280zxi-might-do-this-4-my-280z/#findComment-85177 Share on other sites
June 15, 200420 yr comment_85179 There is a 350z in the AZCC. The 350z has a bar that runs across the strut tower in the back he had it rigged in the middle of that. It looked ok. Would have looked better in a s30.How hard would it be to put one back there? Im not going to try this anytime soon. Just a thought. June 15, 200420 yr comment_85182 Besides the fact that it is totally illegal to have any video screen viewable of the driver while the car is running. Kinda like the DWI laws, if you have your keys in your hand that's a DWI. I say go for it.I wound go with a visor or the glove box. I'm very interested in the exact equipment you are going to use. Wouldn't mind having a video set up in my truck. So let us get this straight. Your buying an LCD display, buying a portable DVD player (IS this the size of a CD player? Didn't know they make em) And a Head unit with audio in and out? And somehow your going to hook up a PS2 or XBOX. You can buy a view screen for a PS2 And Xbox for a $100. That's the cheapest. You've got your games, movies, Linux computer. My last note, what security system are you drooping in your Zed? Xbox is a $300 piece of equipment+$60 games.-Brandon71 240Z Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/12212-anyone-have-a-dvd-video-setup-in-their-240z-or-even-a-280zxi-might-do-this-4-my-280z/#findComment-85182 Share on other sites
June 15, 200420 yr Author comment_85192 I already have a security system in my Z With an ignition kill switch when armed What I want to do is mount the LCD in the glove box. How I would do this is mount it INSIDE of the glove box, so when I open up the glove box, as it folds down, so does the LCD. (just like some of those cars with extra guages or engine computers) So from the outside and inside it looks all stock, until you fold down the glove box and BAM! There's a 7" LCD screen Everything I do in my car I try to make it stealthy and not obvious. For example my secuirty system came with these BIG arse stickers to let people know. I just put on 2 small little stickers above the door locks to say I have Alpine security and I have a blinking bright BLUE LED light to warm em off. Also with all of my audio stuff, I cover it up with a black towel every day so people can't see it, and I don't have a single sticker so no one knows I have it. I try to be stealthy. Anyone observing you driving your car still will know that you've got stuff to steal and make their move at a convenient time/place. June 15, 200420 yr comment_85214 Even if you got a perfect FM Modulator, FM by nature will lose too much sound quality to be a good option. June 16, 200420 yr comment_85237 In the glovebox is definitely the best place to put it, I think. June 16, 200420 yr Author comment_85249 they have some FM modulators where instead of it transmitting it over the air, I can directly connect my antenna to the FM modulator.. that might be good quality. I'll see how it sounds.. and if it's really bad... guess I have to figure something else out.
