Hello Z enthusiasts, I have a question regarding purchasing and welding on a catalytic converter. My car is a 1977 Datsun 280z and sadly, the 30 year no smog program does not apply in California. Car is sitting Non-op and running beautifully (with some issues on the alternator not charging the battery). From the looks of it, from the exhaust manifold runs a straight pipe into the exhaust. This is a modified exhaust (i believe magna flow). To get my car smog ready (because I want to daily this car), would it be a simple fix of just cutting the straight pipe and welding on a catalytic converter? Do I have to worry about 02 sensors?

Hi everyone, I'm going to remove the stock factory exhaust header to install an aftermarket header. Do I have to remove the intake manifold?

I know nothing about exhaust. Mine is welded from header to tail pipe. I need to drop it to work on my phone ear suspension and don't want to remove the carbs to drop the header and exhaust as a single unit. Im thinking I'll cut it and use some sort of connector and clamps. Any issues with this plan? Where would you cut it? thanks!

Paint vs. ceramic vs. jet-hot etc. or other finish for new headers. Price, corrosion protection, temp reduction near carbs? Twenty years ago got some nice Clifford headers for my Chevy truck. "Saved" $150 by not ordering them coated, now they're shot. Don't want to repeat that for the Z. Don't know about coatings, though. Seems like using spray cans would be cheapest, but how long would that last?

Higuys, I noticed that there is a gap of about 3-5mm between the exhaust manifold flange and the flange of the tail pipe. It's not an even gap (wider on one end.) If the gap is expected, I thought it out to at least be constant. Is that going to be a serious problem? I could fill the gap with some high-temperature RTV sealer, or I could spend a bundle to get a better exhaust man re-work the exhaust (I was considering the Monza exhaust.) Isn't there a spherical joint there, and you only need to tighten it to get a better seal, or just get a proper (thicker) gasket?

Yikes....I came on the board to help me decide what kind of exhaust I want to put on the 73, and I got a popsicle headache. I use the board alot for help, but I don't think I've ever read so many differing opinions on a Z subject. It seems there are a bunch of options for around $200 - $250 out there, which is about my exhaust budget. I'm most interested in performance, with sound a distant second. My 73 is very low miles, de-smogged with a rebuilt set of 71 roundtops. Otherwise everything is stock. I was thinking about the MSA twice pipes, or the Black Dragon Monza exhaust. Any other, better, options in that price range for my car? I can't wait to read the respons…

Stock '73 bottom end, 1980 L20aet head (F.I. turbo) with round exhaust ports and F.I. notches. SU carbs from P.O. conversion. Planning MSA 6-2 header, wondering what header/intake gasket to get. Seems like a common question but couldn't find the right thread. Been running this head for a few years with no problems other than carb/ignition tuning, it all bolted up OK. I can ask the mechanic what gasket he put but he might not remember. MSA catalog says use 77-78 280z headers for round port head. They say call about header gasket if using round port head with SU's but asking here first. Do the injector notches in 77-78 F.I. gasket matter ? Any other issues ?

'73 240z with stock 240 bottom end, and head with round exhaust ports. AT so MSA 6-1 headers won't fit. Wanted equal length with 1 3/8" primaries to maximize already good mid-range torque but Stahl NLA and custom out of price range. Thinking MSA 6-2-1 for 77-78 280z but that collector pipe they supply looks a little crappy and the muffler guy would need to fabricate something to hookup to my 2 1/4 exhaust pipe anyway. Also want to extend the secondaries to equalize the unequal lengths somewhat and maybe help at midrange. Need some photos to show the boss at muffler shop. Found one online but the merge collector looks bad, see below. Anybody have photos in and/or …

A good bit of educational information in various locations at the site. I don't know enough to comment on it, but lots of interesting reading, technical but easy to understand. Helped to clear up some concepts I didn't understand previously. They don't make headers for 4 or 6 cylinder cars, they sell parts though, for anyone making their own headers. http://www.headersbyed.com/index.htm

I am thinking about purchasing a complete stock system which has all its prebend tubes and does not rust. I have seen many reviews and advised to purchase the following kit from MSA: MSA Premium Exhaust System, 70-72, 74 240Z-260Z (For Stock Manifold) http://www.thezstore.com/page/TZS/PROD/classic19j/15-6302 How sporty does this exhaust system sound? Looking for classic italian sport car sound!! This is what i actually have in my car and plan on getting rid of!!! It was installed here in Panama.

I'm in the process of pulling the head on my '72 240Z and on removing the exhaust manifold found long pipes extending into the head (photo attached). I assume these were for a long-disconnected air pump (it was gone when I bought the car). My question is should I remove them and do one of the hacks found in the topic: http://www.classiczcars.com/topic/51171-keep-original-air-port-exhaust-manifold-or-who-cares/ or leave them be? I can't imagine that they are any help to performance, but do they do any harm? I installed a Motorsports premium exhaust system a few years ago, but otherwise run a straight, albeit, smog device removed engine. If, if the cam needs…

I've had a Flowmaster muffler on my 240 for about 12 years. I bought an MSA 6-into-1 header, their 2.5" stainless kit (with DynoMax muffler) and had it installed by a local shop. I didn't like the DynoMax muffler too much, and it was occasionally rattling, and after a few tries at the original shop to fix it, I took it to another shop. I had them put on a Flowmaster, and they did a few very minor tweaks to the piping so stop the bumping and rattling. I liked the sound better, and it served me well for awhile. About a month ago, due to ignition issue I was having (long story, suffice it to say don't use a MSD Blaster II coil with a Pertronix Ignitor) I had a very loud b…
