  1. So you found a Z huh? congratulations. Not many yung teens are as lucky as you to have a car like a classic Z. Reason being is because they are not cheap hobbies for one thing What hobby is Anyways sounds like a good one. Did you happen to look at the floor pans and rails really good while you were under it??? Rust is the worst like everyone else has stated. The rough, idle could be solved by just giving it a GOOD thorough tune up. Plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter ect. You should consider flushing the cooling system good because who knows when that was last done? Along with changing the diff. fluid and servicing the transmission. I recommend Redline MT-90 for the trans. It's awesome stuff. As for oil I use 10W30 in mine. Mine is a garaged beauty so my baby gets tucked away during winter and the 10W30 works good when I go to throw the battery in her once in a while during winter to start it in my garage. Also works well in our warm summers also. When you do tune her up, I recommend NGK plugs. The Z's do the best on those. Nissan used them as there factory plugs. The ones you will need are the B6ES. By the way, be careful learning how to drive a manual with your Z :nervous: Sure would suck to do something to the clutch or tranny on your "new" Z I'd practice on another car if you have the option. If not, then just take your time and be careful. Once again, congrats and like Alex 240Z said "Good luck kid and "Enjoy the Ride" !!!!!!!"
  2. aahh sh!t man. Now I'm REALLY looking forward to doing mine :disappoin Is it possible to take photo's and post them for us, or is it too much of a pain in the a$$? If I'm understanding you right, then I believe you should be turning your wrench this way -> (clockwise) to loosen. Good luck.
  3. Thanks GunnerRob made it possible He made it smaller for me, then e-mailed it to me.
  4. Thanks. I'm in Cottage Grove, MN. so I'm a little ways away from you I never heard or knew anything about a Z show at Morrie's Nissan?? Interesting. B.T.W. MAX, You'll love the Panasports. They look so sharp on the Z. I'm very happy with the BFGoodrich traction T/A's I bought last year. What I loved about them is that they have a real stiff sidewall compared to others which is what you want on a sports car like the Z for excellent handling. I wanted to keep the stock size so I got the 14X6 Panasports with the stock tire size which is 195/70R14 I'm VERY happy with them. My Z handles like a dream on turns and on S Curves through country roads I highly recommend them. I got my Traction T/A's online at http://www.tirerack.com and they shipped them to me. I was a happy customer. I then loaded them up in my daily driver once they arrived along with the rims and I took them down to Tires Plus which was listed as one of Tire Racks installers and they mounted them for me and got them balanced. Then I picked them up and installed them on my Z. (Nobody touches my Z but me I'd for sure consider them if your looking for new tires. They are also not bad price wise either. Good luck. Thanks again for the compliments. I see so many other nice looking Z's on here like jmarks for example along with many others and I thought "Might as well show off my pride and joy as well
  5. I've never used photoshop. I'm a computer dumba$$ . I don't know, I'll figure out a way to make one of them smaller for my avatar.
  6. Oh yeah about the avatar Alfadog, I know One of these days I should change it. Problem is that older one is the only one I got that fits. My newer ones are too big
  7. Thanks all for the nice compliments. Yeah, I love the louvers as well and yes, I make damn sure no corrosion starts under the mounting tabs. As far as not seeing much of the sun- Only time she see's sun is when I'm out cruising She's always locked away safe and sound in either my garage at home, or my storage garage and no my Z is not from Minnesota I bought her in AZ. and had her shipped to me up here in MN. and of course I don't allow it to see winter. Hell I'm so fussy I don't let it see rain As for my rims- Those are genuine Panasports from MSA. with brand new BF Goodrich Traction T/A's from The Tire Rack. Just put those tires and rims on her last year. Once again, thanks for all the nice compliments. I get people looking at me and drooling at the gas pump all the time and they all say the same thing "DAMN, that Z looks like she just came off the showroom floor" I tell them with pride "Yep, I work hard to keep her nice. After all it's my pride and joy" P.S. Look forward to seeing your recent purchase from Nevada J P D Congrats.
  8. I just got done giving my baby a bath. She looked soooo good that I had to snap some photos of her As you can tell I'm one proud Z owner

This should answer your question http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16224 It's not too hard to find  All i did was click on "Volunteers" under Main Menu. Good luck with your Z search by the way.

Sounds like you might have a slight fuel leak somewhere. Open the hood and check all the rubber fuel hoses on the fuel pipes and make sure they are not cracked and leaking. Also check under the car for fuel leaks as well. This is what I'd check first. Nothing would be worse than to have you and your Z blow up

Thanks all for your replies. I'll do some more searching around for the ball joint tool. Another question that comes to mind for all that have done this project, how did you go about aligning it after the job???? I don't have the kind of equipment at home shown in the FSM to align it in my garage so I'm guessing I'll have to run it down to an alignment shop to get it re-aligned after i complete the job which I'm not crazy about doing as I do all my own work but what can ya do? Thanks again all. "Ricklandia" Hopefully mine won't be too much of a pain in the a$$ :nervous: Mine are also the originals so who knows
  13. Nothing beats the original FSM in my opinion. You can purchase these on CD ROM from Courtesy Nissan by the way. Here is the link: http://www.courtesyparts.com/secondtier_s30.html

I'm borrowing your photo drunkenmaster hope you don't mind  Where would I be able to find a ball joint puller like this one??? I'll be doing mine on my Z soon. Can hardly wait Thanks in advance.
  15. Yes, It will still help you out greatly because he also covers reinstallation and will list some of the torque specs for different nuts & bolts on all kinds of different parts. One of his tips I think is really good but is common sense as well. NEVER toss an old part until you have the exact replacement part in your hand. Some parts on our Zs are rare and can be difficult to find and you may need to do what you have to do to get your existing part refurbished. Even though you have already torn down your car, I'm positive you will still benefit from this book. Best of luck.
  16. The "How to Restore Your Datsun Z Car" is an excellent book. I recommend it to any newbie out there who is wanting to get into Z Cars. "drunkenmaster" It's mostly a guide but he does include quiet a few technical stuff as well. The guy who wrote it guides you through the process step by step on how HE does a restoration on a Z car and this guy is very knowledgable. He also provides many photos in his book with lots of info. from his project on his 240Z. He also lists many good "tricks" and safety pointers. He goes over how to tear down certain parts on a z and rebuild it back to new condition like suspension, brakes, interior, exterior ect. He will explain how to remove other stuff like the differential, motor and transmission and reinstalling it but wont tell you HOW TO take them apart and put 'em back togeather. He will refer you to other good books that will cover that like "How to Rebuild Your Nissan OHC Engine for example to rebuild the motor. It's very informative and is very easy to follow. It's for sure one you should purchase. Have fun reading up on the Z's
  17. Also about the alignment, I'll just take it too a shop like I've done before and they will have to align it since I don't have the equipment shown in the FSM at home to do it which kinda sucks thanks again.
  18. Thanks. Yep, I got my FSM. Have had it for a LONG time and has paid for itself many times  No, I inspected everything else under my Z and everything is good and sound. The suspension, brakes, bake hoses, bushings ect. is good. Just did all that stuff not too long ago (Ball Joints where good then). Only additional thing I will do since I got it all apart is probably install new wheel bearings and races If needed. Thanks for the "Heads up" on places to purchase the puller. appreciate it.

Yep, like mentioned above, there are numerous front end components that can cause noise when they go bad so it's difficult to give you an answer as to which part is the culprit. Another pointer I can think of is to check your ball joints. Bad ball joints will cause a "Clunk" noise on rougher roads. When your under your Z, inspect the rubber boots and make sure they are in good shape and hold grease. If not, the ball joints will need to be replaced. Mine just started doing the "Clunking" sound just recently the last couple times I had her out so I crawled under my Z to look everything over and sure enough, It's my ball joints causing the problem So I'd look into those as well. Best of luck and congrats on finding your Z
  20. I know you have redone your front end components mdbrandy which Is why I thought I'd call you Input from anyone else is appreciated as well. Well I was under my Z this evening and noticed that all my rubber boots are worn for my suspension ball joints and for the tie rod ends and some are leaking. I did read through my F.S.M. just to refresh my memory on a couple things. Shouldn't be too bad. My question is, Where did you get your ball joint puller??? I could get one from the tool guy where I work however he will want more $$$ for one just cause of the name but if I have to get it from him then thats life Also when you get everything back togeather, did you have to take yours in to an alignment shop??? I don't have the equipment needed listed in the F.S.M at home to do the alignment unfortunately  Any pointers or heads up from any of you that have done this recently would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance guys.
  21. I get Road & Track and I saw it When I turned the page and saw the two full pages of Z's I thought AWW SWEEEEEET
  22. Yeah, I thought about doing it somewhere else, then I thought, ahh the hell with it  It only last shortly. Plus my neighbors pretty much keep to themselves anyways which is a good thing If you try it, post your results. It should help. later.
  23. Bottle of engine cleaner in the gas tank??? What did you use? :nervous: If you want to clean out Carbon Buildup, Clean your intake valves, clean Catalytic, Converter ect. then I recommend using Sea Foam. to do the above, Start the engine. If cold, let it run so it warms up to normal. Remove the vacuum line at the brake booster, dump about 1/3 of the can down that vac. line. it will suck it into the intake. After you finish pouring 1/3 of the can into that vac. line, turn off engine. Let it sit turned OFF for about 5 minutes, then resecure vacuum line to brake booster. Then fire her up and rev her up good. You'll then put on a smoke show for the neighbors but it will only be briefly. After that, take her out on the highway and watch out for the piglets  do about 80 for a short time to help it do it's job. you will have to change plugs though after doing this. i did at least being that they got fauled but who cares. Plugs aren't that costly. After doing this, You'll feel like your driving a totally different car. After I did this, the car ran like I just drove it off the show room floor. This stuff is awesome. I'd try this since you haven't changed plugs yet. You only should have to do this procedure once as it cleans everything really good. You only have to do this to systems that have been neglected and are horribly carboned up I'm positive you'll be amazed at the results. Good luck dude.
  24. Yeah, max should be about 4.5 quarts MAYBE a little extra. I bet a good thorough tune up will take care of a lot of your problems Good luck man.
