Brian, The door lock mechanism is a pretty simple design. Somewhat difficult to reach inside the door, but what I would call "theaver's friendly" simple. Most often, the plastic / nylon bushings, washers, spacers wear out and the system of bars and levers jambs up. There is no telling why yours won't work. Remember that the locks don't work when the door is latched open. Set the door striker latch cam on close when you are working on the mechanism. The part number for the lock mechanism is 80502 and 80503-E4100. The door handle rod has a screw adjustment bushing on it - 80698-E4120. HO510-21001 is a bushing / spacer as is 80515-N3000. Send me a PM with a fax number and I'll fax you an exploded diagram from the parts catalog. Now here is something interesting I found while searching the parts archives. Not pictured, but listed as Assy-Lock and Remote Control Door 80500-E4100 applied date up to 6 / 72. Remote Control? Wassatt?
  2. I have $1782.50 in the engine for Her Majesty. Around $900 of that was at the machine shop. No serious machine work, just polishing, but the balance was way out and we spent a lot of effort on that. The head work was real simple too. You should see how pretty this engine is.

That's the siren for the car alarm. Everybody sing along......!

I would think 7 / 71 is a little early, Phred, but I have seen chassis with both the lid / boxes fitted. THe switch-over came when Datsun built cars for the '72 model year. You should write to Beck with your VIN to see how early the chassis changed. I always thought it was in September with HLS30-46001

Hi guys, I checked out Bob Zola's add and noticed the tops of the boxes where the knob attaches looks perfect. Usually, the slot corners chip off, crack and break. I was a little surprised to see them for $40. They could easily be reproductions, but the repro is just as good as the original. The hinge is a thick strip of soft plastic that is pinched along the axis of the hinge so that it bends easily. One leaf is riveted to the lid. The other leaf has holes for a pan head / phillips screw and washer to the body.

This one is a chapter size slice of the 240 Z gossip cake. In the 16 months I have been around, I have seen a lot of funky stuff go on, but this one is really strange. You take care of your deal with Chloe, Andrew. I'm not going to raise hell with her.

Smoking gun indeed. WTF happened? You know Carl? This 240 Z collecting sport / hobby is just the greatest. Flaming, faked deaths, mail fraud, friendships turned bitter. I'm going to write a book. I guess I can always go back to the "boobs" thread......

Well, if I was 1st-Z, I would be pretty sharp. But I'm 26th and 27th - a little slower. I noticed that no one else picked that up either.

All right, I'm convinced. It's her and I can prove it. The age is about right, Mike. Do a listing of all of Leopoldshuman postings and you will find some posts with pictures attached. Or actually, they aren't attached any more. In the post listing, check out the http reference for the attachment - MidwestZ. It's her. Wow, am I bummed.

Somehow, I think this is a wild goose chase, but the coincidence is bizarre. I don't remember her mentioning cat names. Andrew, I have been patiently waiting for my parts too!!!!!!
  12. I could not even start to add up my hours, but the receipts for work I have done - including labor - go in the "services" file. With a fair amount of accuracy, I'll be able to see what I spent on parts for each car as well as services. They will include the body and paint work, the dipping, machine shop, and I may have a pro do the upholstery. I also keep a file for tools and supplies, and will pro-rate that to the car. I'm keeping pretty accurate records so that I can speak with knowledge about how much it costs to restore one of these babys. So far, the parts file is the thickest. But that is because I bought parts for 26 before I started so as to compensate for inflation. I'm going to get bit on prices of parts for 27, but I am a much wiser shopper now.
  13. You're whining, Vicky. No one builds a car as nice as Zrush without....This is a size issue. Bribes go in the beer file, right? Let's see....debits on the left, credits on the right...
  14. I agree completely with beandip. Sand the car down completely and paint it. I'll bet the peeling around the windows is from years of silicone rubber dressing. Make sure you get a good surface prep in those areas. Now is the perfect time to replace the rubber, too.
  15. Your'e including storage fees / rent for the shop? OMG Labor is a fine line between hobby and business. Hobby labor is free, of course, I count labor I pay for in the "services" column. So far, this folder is mostly parts. The machine shop for the engine just went into services even though it had some parts in the bill. What about "consulting services"? All the cost of lunch at Hooters and beer - how about beer? Are you including beer? Do you keep receipts for beer?
  16. You told me at the winter car show, Vicky. Actually, I thought it was rather inspirational. I have a file cabinet in the royal archives dedicated to the financial transactions. Are we talking just parts? How about services, supplies and tools? Princess 27 has been showing at a local body club up in Tampa and doing special hurricane party engagements. So far, she has made $11.25, however if we have another hurricane, I'm sure she will make more. Her Majesty is a total priss and won't do anything unless I spend money on her.

Hey Andrew, He is putting his car in show quality for the national convention next summer. Too bad. He was really hoping to get that choke plate. The price was totally insane. Tell me what your model friend did, Keith.
  20. Sorry to take so long to get back. We had a hurricane today. Don't ask. I'm in a bad mood. Let's see...I don't do anything to my desktop screen setup. It is blank in one of the optional color schemes. I go into screen saver, set the reaction time real low - like one minute, and reference slide show from a saved file of jpg's. I don't know what version this is. Whatever you get with Dell these days. This computer is great. For the first time in all my computers, I have music. Internet radio is WAY cool. 3WK Thanks for the pics Gav! I sent that to one of my Porsche friends.

Yes. And the editorial discusses the reader poll / survey CM has been conducting. Classic Motorsports, evidently, was a British car magazine and CM reports the publication is now financially stable. They want to keep a different format from Grassroots, yet cover vintage racing, road tours, shows, etc. CM pointed out that there have been many requests for Japanese coverage and the 1970 Z is mentioned. This issue covers a patch panel installation on an MG. It is still a British oriented magazine, but I think there are a lot of similarities concerning restoration topics.
  22. I set the screen saver to kick in real quick and have slide shows of my ten favorite cars at the moment. The file changes every now and then. Currently, I have shots from a Ferrari show mixed with Zrush.

I just ran a search through the archives for "floor pan replacement", "floor pan installation", and the member galleries for "floor pan". There is a ton of stuff here. Has anyone produced a video of this process? Is a home made video of this and other rust related stuff worth $20 ? The basic question of floor pan work is real common. I am going to do floor pan surgery on 27 and maybe 26. Everyone seems to agree that Charlie Osborne has the best deal going. Does everyone know seat brackets are available from John at www.baddogparts.com ? Eastwood sells videos of general welding and metal fabricating. I have those and they are very good. Seems all you have to do is spend 11 buzillion dollars on their tools!!!!!!!!!

Well that's very interesting. I wonder if it is a car I saw for sale not too long ago and talked to Ken Jones about. I think CM is over on the other coast getting blown away at the moment. I'll have to look in to this. Thanks

I hear ya! And that is my plan. A friend just paid $1200 and they are seriously drop dead gorgeous. They will be in Syracuse. Might we take the time to go over some old thread material for everyone's interest? The 'D' hubcap represents Datsun's initial wheel cover appearing on cars built up to mid 1971. The center hub sports a round plastic emblem with the letter D. The pressed metal spoked design was also used for a chromed hexagon symbol in the center and a few hubcaps are simply painted black with no emblem. Only the 'D' centers appeared in the American market. The stamped steel is chromed on both sides with lacquer paint finish on the outside spokes. The hubcaps press fit to the standard steel wheel using a series of spring clips around the circumference. The earliest metal stampings were bent with fairly large spaces between the clips - almost like a series of tabs. These caps had a tendency to fall off under hard cornering and were soon replaced with the later design offering more clips and much less space between them. The original chrome finish is typical of Datsun cost saving techniques of the time. Inspection "ken" markings are typically inked on the inside. Used hubcaps suffer from rust and brake dust corrosion. The paint finish does adhere to the chrome very well, but suffers from age. The plastic center 'D's were chromed plastic painted satin black on the surround. They pin through holes in the hubcap and metal backer clips. Generally speaking, they are fragile and a serious pleasure to find used in good condition. All of these pictures can be found in various threads on this site.
