I recently restored the fuel tank because rust was blocking the fuel line, resulting in the obvious problem. But I am still occasionally experiencing a combustion problem. My engine has cut out on me twice while driving. I also had problems starting the car last night and this morning. The engine turned over as it should, but I wasn't getting combustion for a couple minutes. With a bit of persistence, the engined eventually roared to life with an excessive amount of grey smoke coming out of the tail pipe for 30-45 seconds. The car now starts and drives, but for how long? Any thoughts/advice regarding likely problems and solutions?

well, that was a bear to get on. I ended up clamping a wood clamp onto the filler hose and then applying leverage behind the clamp to force the hose forward onto the tank. The Z is now all buttoned up and driving again. Some have said that dropping the tank is not difficult. Good for them, but this project was not an easy one for me.

Thanks! I removed the interior panel and tail light panel. Removed the vent tank and extended the hoses. I am now in the process of lifting the tank while reconnecting hoses and pulling hoses. It is a back and forth job. But I am now having some difficulty getting the filler hose to fit snug against the tank. Any advice on how to get enough leverage on the hose to force it into its final position?

so, I am a newbie. how do I disconnect the vapor hoses from the vapor tank?

I dropped and restored the fuel tank. It now looks great; no rust and property coated. But to disconnect the vent hoses from the tank required the use of a long screwdriver to pry the vent hoses off the tank. That is because the '75 Z does not have an inspection panel for easy access to the hoses. Now how do I re-connect the vent hoses to the fuel tank?

success. thank you for the help. lots of dislodged rust inside the tank, but the auto shop says the tank is in better shape than the average Z tank they see. should have it back in a week.

I am new to the forum and new to Zs. Please be gentle. My 1975 Z very likely has a rusty fuel tank and filter. Tried dropping the tank yesterday (with a broken right arm, in a cast, in the cold) so I could send it out for restoration. My nephew and I were unsuccessful in disconnecting the wires from the tank/sending unit. Is there a trick to disconnecting the female plastic part (to the sending unit) from the male rubber part (to the power supply)? Does it pull apart with force or does it require an intermediate step?
