anyone understand what my mechanic is talking about?
So how much does a port and polish job cost, if you have a mechanic do it? thanks, ty

Stereo Install....
Thanks for the feedback! i'll definitely ask for the fine print before committing to any "free installation". Thanks, ty

Stereo Install....
will stores like circuit city, best buy, Fry's, etc install a stereo into a 240z for free, IF you buy the unit there? has anyone done this? i haven't tried. i just assumed that since 240z's are old, the installation would not be as easy as in newer cars, thus they would charge for the extra work. perhaps i made a bad assumption. thanks, ty

Stereo Install....
Mar2c, i looked at your web site. great job!! how did you attach the power antenna switch to the side of the console? i have mine in a similar spot, but i haven't made it permanent. i don't want to drill holes or superglue anything into the console. just looking for some more ideas... thanks, ty

Shifter Knob
Zwolley, good luck finding a plastic insert. i didn't mean to steal the thunder from your original post. So, back to you... Does anyone have any ideas for finding the 4-speed insert Zwolley needs?
-
Shifter Knob
Thanks Zwolley! that is just what i was looking for. so now that i can buy one, my next question is, how easy (or difficult) is it to install? i've never tried to take the existing one off, so i don't know if it just screws off, or what. my apologies if this is a stupid question.

Shifter Knob
Yes, i want the complete wood knob, with 4-speed pattern. I'd appreciate a link. thanks, Ty

Shifter Knob
i remember my dad's 240 had a wood knob with the 4-speed pattern. i also have not found it in MSA or VB. When my dad and i bought our current 240, i thought that this piece would be easy to find. apparently not. Thanks for any help! -Ty

Jumping Tach and Mis-Fire On 1971 240Z Stocker
I had similar symptoms as rzola originally posted, except my 71 240 stocker has a pertronix ignitor and performance coil. Also, slightly different from rzola, my tach would jump only above 4000 rpm. i asked the forum under the thread "bouncing tachometer", here's the link: http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=6235 rzola, did upgrading your coil solve the problem? I'm still having trouble with mine, but i haven't changed the tach yet... Thanks, Ty

bouncing tachometer
Thanks 2many, Victor, and RCA123, sounds like i may need to replace the tach, or at least switch pieces like RCA suggests. I'm out of cash to spend on the car for now, so i'll have to deal with a bouncing needle. Any other suggestions or insights about tachometers/speedometers are welcome! Thanks, Ty

bouncing tachometer
i briefly checked over the connections at the coil and everything seems to be connected okay. i played with the conncections that are friction fit, but i didn't take it all the way apart and re-connect everything. Also, my fan belts had been squeaking so i tightened them up. Unfortunately, the tach is still bounching, although, it seems to be less, and i haven't noticed any drops down to zero. it also seems to hold steady to about 4300 rpm before the bouncing starts. is there another area i can check? Since i don't know how the tach gets its reading, any info on how it works would also be helpful. thanks, Ty

bouncing tachometer
i'll check out the connections at the coil, and see if that helps. i'm looking forward to testing it out on my way home from work! Thanks, Ty

bouncing tachometer
Hi guys and gals, i have noticed that my tachometer "bounces" once it gets up around 4000 rpm. what i mean by "bounces" is that the needle will suddenly drop down to 2000, then "bounce" back to 3000, then drop to 2000 or 1000 or all the way down to 0, then "bounce" up to 4000. The bouncing is random and occurs only when the engine is near 4000 rpm or more. Occasionally it will remain steady. is this common? Can anyone point me the right direction to troubleshoot and repair this? i have a little experience with cars but no clue how the tach works. i have a stock '71 240, with petronix ignitor and petronix 40,000 volt flamethrower coil. Thanks for the assistance, Ty

87 octane fuel
When i used 87 octane my stock 240 z would keep running for up to 30 seconds after i turned it off. I think that is called "dieseling". please correct me if i'm wrong. I read on this site somewhere that higher octane could fix the problem, so i switched to 91 and now it is fine. I haven't noticed any performance increases, but it is nice to have the engine stop when i want to get out of the car. Do you think i could switch back to 87 and not have the dieseling problem? i have heard that 89 octane is a mixture of 91 and 87. i have no idea if it is true or not. -Ty

Buy Opportunity
I had a dieseling problem that was solved, at least for the last two months, by using higher octane fuel (91). It sounds like your engine is in decent shape though. I think a 240 for honda civic is a great trade, as far as looks and performance are concerned. rust is another matter. Good luck, Ty

4 speed trans from a 280?
Thanks 2manyZ's, I appreciate your time. At first i wanted an original Z, but the four speed isn't doing it for me on the freeway. So, I am actually thinking about putting a 5 speed in.

4 speed trans from a 280?
The previous owner of my 71 Z put a four speed transmission back into it and i assumed it was from an early z car. Then i noticed the other day that someone wrote "77 280Z" on the transmission. i'm not sure of the name of the part is that it was written on it, but i could see it from looking down into the engine bay standing on the driver's side. So my questions are, how can i tell where the transmission came from? Did 280's come in 4 speed? perhaps i wasn't even looking at the transmission in the first place! i don't know much about cars, but i love learning about them. Thanks, Ty

How do you like the front of your Z?
Thanks for the pictures! I prefer the unmodified look, but the front spoiler is growing on me. Are there any performance benefits to the front spoilers or Gnose? Thanks, Ty

My New 240z
Nice car! So what do you plan on doing about the rear bumper? I also like the look of the z without it, but i'm afraid of major damage in a rear end accident.
