There will always be people who respond without reading and thinking first. Many politicians depend on that.

https://www.opensecrets.org/news/2020/03/burr-unloaded-stocks-before-coronavirus/ Never mind. The facts tell their own story.
  3. I'm telling you man...pull that thing right out of there. All the way. Make it naked. Grab the cable end and pull and it will slide right out. If you can't get it back in it's broken anyway. Here's one look at that end. Yours looks pretty normal. The tip doesn't have the serrations. https://jdm-car-parts.com/products/reproduction-speedomter-cable-for-datsun-240z-260z-and-280z

Probably. My point was more about politicians profiting from the plight of the masses. I was being sarcastic. Burr knew so you have to think that many of his colleagues knew. Look at how the efforts to get things started were slow-walked over the last weekend. It's sociopathic, by definition, I think.

OHSU is a well-respected teaching university in Portland, Oregon. They predict that infections will double every 6.2 days. https://katu.com/news/coronavirus/number-of-coronavirus-infections-to-double-every-6-days-ohsu-researchers-say

https://www.ft.com/content/a26fbf7e-48f8-11ea-aeb3-955839e06441 Edit - a sign of the "Times". I clicked through a Tweet to some really nice work showing charts about each country. But, apparently, you have to pay to see it now. Sorry about the link.
  7. At least pull it out and look first. We like to see damage. Assume, but verify. http://woodworkerb.com/home/datsun-240z-rebuild/speedometer-cable-replace/ https://www.thezstore.com/page/TZS/PROD/classic01a/45-4101B
  8. Did you look at it? You can pull the whole cable out out of its sheath and examine it. Sometimes they break in the middle. Pull it out, make sure its complete, give the ends a close look, clean it up, add some lube, and shove it back in the sheath. After they wear there can be enough room to get the sheath locked down without having the cable inside registered at its ends. I have had that happen. Like people are saying, the ends of the cable have to be set in their holes. The sheath just holds it together once you get the ends placed properly.
  9. So, just a conversion error? 373.5 mm = 14.7? Not 22.7? If you think metric you'd never notice. Wonder how they got that number.

It's nice to be connected. Could have got a head start on the financial problem. I'll bet some of this audience made a killing, shorting the market. https://www.npr.org/2020/03/19/818192535/burr-recording-sparks-questions-about-private-comments-on-covid-19
  11. Disconnect it at the transmission. Then spin the cable end by hand with the speedometer end screwed on. It will screw on all the way with no pressure on the cable holding it off (edited this from earlier). Push on the cable end while you spin it. You have to get the hole aligned with the cable end. It should drop in. Then, you might have to spin the transmission output shaft when you reattach the transmission end. Worth a shot, it worked for me. I've never had the dash out of my car, but I have had the gauges out. Wait until you get to the trip meter cable. That's the tiny fingers problem.
  12. I think that you definitely got the close ratio 5 speed. And odds are very very high that you a got a 3.9 diff, if that's a coupe, not a 2+2. Can't tell from your pictures. The drain plug magnets of both will be a first clue about how they've survived the years.

I went as conservative and as far to the right as I could find and I still get 10 times worse than flu. Plus more contagious. But, as our guy at the top says "just keep saying it until they believe it". https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2020/03/11/dr-anthony-fauci-estimates-coronavirus-mortality-rate-at-one-percent/ "Fauci said that the mortality rate for the common flu was 0.1 percent, which meant that the coronavirus was about ten times as lethal. “This is ten times more lethal than the seasonal flu,” he said. “I think that’s something that people can get their arms around and understand.” "

This is where our views diverge. Mine are about keeping everyone safe and alive, yours are about surviving and being safe yourself. Nothing wrong with either, but that explains, I think, why people are approaching the discussion from different angles. There will probably be reports soon of people getting shot because they had COVID-19. "He was 5 feet away, I had to do it. Obviously."

I had a general manager once, my bosses boss, who would not accept what our inventory of materials data clearly showed. That we were going to run out of a certain material if we did not change the blend ratio of the materials, using less of the one that was going to run out in a couple of weeks. The weekly inventory data had been tracked for months and charts and plots of the data clearly showed what was going to happen. I showed him the data and the plots and explained that we needed to make a minor change to the blend to avoid a big disruption. He listened and said "well, I'll believe that when i see it. My GUT tells me different". We ran out of material, had to run off-spec. and the chaos lasted for weeks. He had a Chem. E. degree from one of the big Chicagoland universities. I can still see that scene in my mind, years later. Some people just have a knack for numbers and calculation, and trust the math, I guess, and some just go off of only what's right in front of them. It's weird.

Wait, here's a better look. ICU beds. Not sure what's real. It's from 2012. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3551445/

Just kind of realized that nobody in the media is actually measuring or talking about in detail one of the key issues - how many hospital beds or ventilators or IC nurses are being utilized. And what is the available capacity? How many spots are open and how fast are the y filling up? Everyone is talking about testing and how fast cases are growing but the "No Vacancy" sign at the hospitals is what really matters the most. A chart of hospital beds filling might have some impact. They're building a field hospital at the local fairground in Oregon. It will be, in essence, in an actual field. https://katu.com/news/local/oregon-to-open-250-bed-emergency-hospital-in-state-fairgrounds

Edit - mine below is just an amplification of above. Posted at the same time. One more thing that has been mentioned but gets lost in the noise, when comparing to the flu. The common flu has a vaccine, plus people have developed immunity. So every year only a fraction of the population gets the flu. The experts are supposing that EVERYONE will eventually get COVID-19. Because there is no vaccine and because it is new. That's why it's called the Novel Corona virus. The nerdy medical researchers are doing a poor job of explaining this. And the administration is doing a poor job of explaining why it's important to slow the spread. Only so many critically ill people can be cared for at any period of time. So the "system" can't handle a large influx of patients. When you listen to them you get the feeling that "well, we'l just all get sick and the same people that would die will die anyway". But the reality is that many more people will die if they don't get proper care. So when things get bad you're going to see stories about critically ill people being sent home or being cared for in a tent, and dying because no ventilators were available. So, the personal view is "do I want a bed and a ventilator and personnel to be ready for me/my parents/my grandparents/anyone when they need it?" If you don't care, then party on the system will get overloaded and people will be dying at home while waiting. If you do then we need to put the effort in to stop the spread.

It's the projections forward that are most concerning. It's not now that matters, it's what will happen if we don't get ahead of the game. Extrapolation, and exponential growth. We are on the yellow dot line. Look at what has happened in just the last four days. This is real data, not hype. If you're used to working with numbers, this is serious stuff. https://www.arcgis.com/apps/opsdashboard/index.html#/bda7594740fd40299423467b48e9ecf6

Trump is discussing the details of the nasal swab. Expertise. Executive order to move to the "self-swab".
