Show me what you have done with this hidden upgrade
I am looking to upgrade my original AM/FM Radio in the console. I want to leave the original look in the console and put a remote IC stereo in the glove box - total seperate system to the original stereo in the car (so when you open the glove box there will be a total faceplate with the upgrade reciever in the entire space of the glovebox - all nicely tucked away out of site). I am looking at a Retrosound Digital Media Reciever with the IC cable to run the remote control so I can change songs - stations - MP3 - without opening the glove box. I am also planning on installing the black speaker panel from MSA. http://retrosoundusa.com http://www.thezstore.com/page/TZS/PROD/SP/50-5351 http://www.thezstore.com/page/TZS/PROD/IA42/50-1290 Has anybody done this install and if so how did the install work for you? I know I will have to support the reciever inside the glove box cavity and I'm sure the actual glovebox will have to come out for the install. Somebody may have already optimized this install in a different fashion that is even better - show me what you have completed - I'm looking for the best quality install - not the loudest - my ears are still ringing from the last KISS concert I went to back in the 80's!! I have already searched the archieves and did not find this type of install. Thanks in advance for your assist!

Hagerty Insurance
I've got both my collectables covered under Hagerty. Just be sure you have your values set correctly to cover a total loss (plan for the worse and hope for the best). You have to have pictures into them and you car(s) have to be garaged full time in a locked garage. I'm sure their claims are far and few between. I have not had a claim yet (thanks goodness). 1972 Datsun 240 Z 1929 Ford Model A Roadster w/ rumble seat I wouldn't think of going anywhere else

What's a good 240z really worth?
If I had it to do over I would find a great restored project that somebody has gotten tired of and purchase it. Naturally I would fly to the location and personally view the car before the purchase. By the time you buy a car, complete a restoration-refresh of some sort, replace body panels, replace interior parts, work on some engine issue, exhaust, and so forth- take two or three years to complete, and spend much more that you budgeted it would be a lot easier to take your time - and purchase somebody elses project. So- Whats a Datsun 240Z worth - It's worth (to you) whatever you have in it!! So - would I do the restore-refresh again - IN A HEARTBEAT!!

To Stripe or Not To Stripe?
Craig- Great looking car. I am a stripe fan (see below) but IMO some cars look great and some cars get too much going on). I would also have to agree with the above posts. Personally, I think the car would look great by losing the stripes, and also removing the front Datsun plate and putting on driving lights in the front. The front spoiler looks great and the Datsun colors on the front plate is not complimenting the overall colors of the car.........IMO. Let us know your final descision. What ever it is, you can't go wrong with a Datsun Z Car!!

MSA discount?!

Hello from a new owner of a '73 240Z
Congrats on your find, looks great! Looking forward to seeing more pictures. While you are cleaning the carbs you may want to pull that gas tank and make sure everything is clean in there. There are some great write ups on prep for getting your car starting before you actually fire it up. It could save you some big money on interior damange to your engine. Let the FUN begin!!

280 vs 240 louvers
I got (IMO) real lucky and found the louvers on ebay about 3 weeks ago. The PO never installed them, they were in the original box and I got them with a BIN for $140.00 and 35.00 ship. One of the best buys I have purchased on ebay for my '72, finally I didn't get screwed. The louvers are hinged. http://www.sfxperformance.com/parts/AST10532.htm The manufacturer is: WILLPAK IND 2030 SPEERS ROAD OAKILLE, ON CANADA PART NUMBER 10532

280 vs 240 louvers
I just installed a set I purchased that DO NOT require you to drill into the hatch. I will try to post a couple of pictures this evening. The louvers went on easily and the way it mount was excellent. Somewhere down the road if I want I can take the off for a while and then put them back on and the back deck will remain without holes. I would really think twice before I got a drill and drilled into my deck hatch!

proud 240z owner
There is a ton of information on this site dealing with wheel size and offsets. Be sure to do your research and NOT have your tires rubbing. Wheels are a very personal thing (what I think looks great you might think are just OK). Scan through pictures and find what you like and then double check to make sure they do not rub!! Arne is the resident expert on wheel and tire size. Welcome!

Guess I should introduce myself...

I know she is not a Z, but she's good look'n
Thanks for the kind words. I just freed up some room today and will be able to get my Z back in the garage on Sunday. I agree with everybody, these cars IMO are beautiful and are very basic with the 4 cyl (4 banger) engine. I don't know if any of you have every driven a Model A but it is a very relaxing type of drive. Zguitar71 - You should check out that pick up and send me a PM what it is and the condition of it.......oh, by the way, how about some revese zebra humbuckers........gotta love the 70's!!

I know she is not a Z, but she's good look'n
Just a garage update and an addition to the stable. 1929 Ford Model A Roadster. This roadster was purchased from the founder and CEO of Mako Marine out of Miami (he has sold the company several years ago to Tracker Boats and Bass Outdoor). The last time she was tagged was in 1988. She has been in a climate controlled garage next to a completely restored 1957 Ford Thunderbird (beautiful car and also for sale - contact me if you are interested). I have already lubed the piston rings and hand rotated the engine after a couple of days of soaking. I have replaced the interior fuel shut off under the gas tank (inside the car) and cleaned the sediment tank and carb. I installed a new condenser and plugs. I detailed the car inside and out and it is spotless, a A#1 restoration many years ago. I did have to buy new Firestones for her and damn, they were expensive with the whitewalls but that is the way she should look going down the road. The tires I had replaced had perfect tread but had dry rotted due to the time the car was stored and the tires were on the concrete floor. This winter I will pull the engine clean it up and repaint Ford Green. If it will stop raining long enough I am going to awaken this sleeping beauty this afternoon or tomorrow. I am going to be selling my 1930 Tudor to make room for the Datsun (damn, I need a bigger garage!) The '72 Z is in one of my relatives garage until I can get the '30 sold........anybody looking for a Tudor??

Update on Floorpan Rail Replacement
Steve, I had to replace both my floorpans, dog legs, rear deck lid, rear tail light panel and that was with a car I bought from ebay that claimed rust free. That work is not cheap but the good thing is once it is finalized you know exactly what you have. If you are a die hard Z fan then I would say spend the money and do it. If this was just going to be a project with the Z's not in your blood, I would say part it out. There is a lot of money made on ebay selling good parts to us goof balls that are willing to pay the price. I wish you luck on your descision, keep us posted.

New member intro
Justin- Welcome aboard. Get ready for a great adventure working on your Datsun. This project will turn into a passion. There are not a lot of these cars around and thanks for saving this one. There is a ton of knowledge on this site with a bunch of great guys that can help. I would have to recommend to do a complete search on your project before you ask for help on any one topic. Most everything you are getting ready to come across has been covered at one time or another. If not, give a shout out and somebody can give an a responce with many more to follow. Get some pictures up so we can see what you have and welcome.

whate is the value of these cars
All of us buy cars for different reasons. Originally I purchased mine for a project to fix up and sell. But the car really turned into a labor of love. Now I have more in it than it is worth but I am really not planning on selling it, so what do you do? Well, you keep on spending some more money on it to get it the way you want it to be. I had the Datsun out yesterday (what a beautiful day for a drive) and would have people stop and talk to me for 30 minutes and tell me their "Z" story. There are lots of Vetts, Carmaros, Mustangs from that era but you really don't see many of the older Datsuns out there any more. I had a little guy that was around 12 or 13 that was just in love with the Z yesterday and his dad got some picutures of his son in the drivers seat.......I'm sure he will be talking to his classmates in school about the Datsun and none of them will know what kind of car is is talking about. That is what this site is all about the preservation of the cars. Hopefully our car value will be increasing and the market will acknowledge the 240's for what they are. I know Haggetry Insurance has a higher value placed on them (for insurance reasoning) that is more correct for the expense that some of us go through restoring or refreshing. We just need the NADA value to increase with the expense that some of us go through. My guess would be about 10 more years for our value's to catch up. Good luck with your refresh or restore. IF you are going to fix it up, just be sure to fix it up right. You may want to take little bites. Treat it as a car you would be proud to keep (who knows, you could be like me and end up keeping it).
