Posted December 18, 200321 yr comment_61099 Hello everyone I have been eavesdropping for a while and thought it was about time to post. I have had my 240Z since early 1981. I got it from El Paso, Texas (high and dry), in mint condition with 40,000 miles. In 1983, I converted to 2 Weber progressive down drafts, a 6 into 1 header and a Monza exhaust. In 1987, I did the modifications in my signature. With the arrival of wife, house and kids, the 240Z has ended up sitting covered in my garage unused since 1991 with only 68,000 miles. I have resisted the urge by my wife to sell it, including one time when she listed it for sale on the internet without telling me. I almost sold it to finance modifications to my Impalas SS, but just could not part with it. After my wife told me that I was too old for the Z, I have decided to never sell it and am now in the process of getting it back in shape. It starts right up, and still looks, runs and drives great. However, I need two things to get it to pass emissions so I can get it relicensed. 1. A new gas cap. My locking cap broke when it was dropped. I have checked around and it does not seem that the locking ones are still in production. I cannot pass emissions with out a good gas cap. Does anyone know where I can get a locking gas cap or an OEM cap? 2. A new exhaust system. My old system from 1987 rusted out over the years of storage from periodically starting the engine. I have done a search and it seems that there are many different opinions on this issue. I actually like how my car sounds now with what is basically a striaght pipe, but that won't cut it with the State of Illinois. Does anyone sell a mandrel bent system? What is the best 2.5 inch system? Thanks. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/9362-need-gas-cap-oem-or-locking/ Share on other sites
December 18, 200321 yr comment_61104 There are a couple places you should be able to find a new OEM gas cap, if Chloe at MidwestZ (one of our sponsors) doesn't have one, I've seen them on Ebay recently being sold by grafzparts. His Buy It Now price is 43 bucks, so e-mail Chloe first, she may do you a better deal.....parts@midwestz.comAs for the exhaust, there are no mandrel bent "kits" that I know of, the second best choice is the 2 1/2 Turbo exhaust form Motorsport Auto. It's either that, or a custom bent system at a good muffler shop if you have one nearby.....Choices and preferences of mufflers is a wide variety of opinions... December 20, 200321 yr Author comment_61348 Thanks for the suggestion. I had seen the gas caps on e bay and they were a little too pricey. I contacted Chloe at Midwestz and purchased a gas cap for much less than the e bay price. As for the exhaust, I was considering the turbo system from MSA. I contacted MSA about their twice pipes system and the rep said that it was too loud and suggested the turbo system. However, I had seen a post on this or another forum in which there were a couple of complaints that the guage on the MSA system pipes was a little too thin. I also have always had straight through mufflers (even my wife's wagon has stainless steel Ultraflows). So I am not sure about the chambered turbo and super turbo mufflers on the MSA system. I wish there was someone with the turbo system nearby so that I could hear it before I bought it. I may see if MSA will sell me just the pipes and use a small Ultraflow.
