t-5 or nissan 5 speed

Featured Replies

I want to convert to a five speed but dont know which one i should go with. Im planning on going with the l28et and hopfully running 300hp at the wheels. would the nissan 5 speed be good enough or should i give it the extra effort to go with the t-5?

i know though for a fact that the T5 can handle up to about 450 hp

i dont think you would have any problems with the nissan 5 speed at all

My experience with the late Nissan 5 speed is that with a high torque turbo engine and 220hp at the rear wheels it tends to spin those bearings housed in aluminium casings. I figure that this is caused by high end loadings transmitted to the bearings by the helical cut gears.

So IMHO, while the Nissan box is a good one and nice to use, 300hp at the rear wheels is getting beyond it.

I've read somewhere that the nissan 5 speed is good for up to 500 hp if its done rite . Im not sure how true that is so i wanna get some opinions

does anyone know how true this is about the nissan 5 speed being capable of 500hp?

Anything is possible but if you are going to retain the standard internals there does not seem to be much you can do to improve them. I rebuilt mine recently, loctited the new bearings in and filled her up with Redline MT90 oil which should help a bit.

the only thing i can verify is that i know for a fact that the T5 can handle that much hp, i cant say for sure that the nissan tranny can though.

Having now tried Redline MT-90 in a Nissan gearbox I would now not recommend it. Harsh gearchanges and it just did not feel right. Changed to Castrol Syntrax, a full synthetic, which feels a lot better.

Me bad for suggesting something that I had not tried myself.:stupid:

You did not like it huh? I have it in my '98 Maxima and loved it. It felt very smooth and shifter well. Smoother than it was with the stock fluid.

Fill the FS5W©71B gearbox with OS-Giken or Hollinger internals and you won't have any issues with strength....

But you may have an issue with the hip pocket-factor
