Some pretty sexy comments from the auction...

Quote

This started life as an affordable world beating sports car. Beneath everything said in the past week, I still see that car. When the owner takes delivery of this, and the feverish pitch of back and forth comments die down. What is left is this orange Z in somebodies garage. There will be that first night. That first night when the new owner closes the garage. The kids are asleep, and the wife is watching a show. It will be quiet. The new owner can run his / her fingers down the hood and open the door. It will pop open nicely and as if telling you to get in. The door will close with a thump. It may take the new owner two tries to close the door, as you know he was taught never to slam doors by his father and healthy weather stripping makes Z doors a challenge at times. Classic J-tin. The seats will feel inviting. The wooden’ish wheel will have an old texture to it. Like a kung fu masters rough old beard. No doubt the new owner will sit there and smell the years of fuel fume impregnated vinyl and it will bring back memories of a simpler time.

What I wish is for the new owner to do is let the jargon die out. Take your right hand and pull the choke back on those SU’s. Crank her over a bit and she will fire to life. You will feel a slight vibration in the seat and the wheel. Isolation is not what this car is about. The small red BRAKE light beneath the speedo will be glowing softly. Give the headlights a click on and slowly lower the choke to let the engine settle into that smooth straight six thrum. Release the brake and back her up.

The hatch area may creak a bit, as the old gal is approaching 50, but she is willing. I think the new owner will marvel at how light the clutch is, and how smoothly it takes up and engages. Brakes come on strong. “Is this really an old car?” It feels both old and new. The Z, even the older ones, were so well designed they feel far better than any car 50 years old has a right to. Reality sets in as you reach for first and try to turn the non power steering though. The thin wheel reminds you that you now have a job to do. Pay attention, listen to the car, feel the wheel, and get ready to enjoy the drive.

Another deep breath.

By the time the new owner is reaching for 2nd, all this banter and back and forth will be gone. Nothing will be left but the drive… the noise, the feeling…the Z experience will start again with a new owner and its beginning and end will be written in the smiles on his face.
