Help!!!!!!

Featured Replies

Ok, i am sure that it is something simple, but a mechanic i am not!

I droze my Z on Friday, not one thing wrong with it at that time. Parked her in the garage and today, it won't even turn over. I have power from battery, lights work even the annoying buzzer from the ignition works, but the car won't even turn over!!

Starter? Voltage regulator? How do i trouble shoot this??

Please help,

Thanks

Paul

first thing i would check is something simple and it happened to me was the coil wire came off

Turn the headlights on and turn it over. Do the headlights dim when you try to start? If not it might be the starter. If it turns over but won't start it might be something else. And if the headlights go dim when you try to start it, it's a dead battery.

If it won't turn over, it won't be the coil wire....:cross-eye

Sounds more like either a loose battery cable, or a bad connection at the starter. If not that, might be the starter solenoid has gone... or the ignition switch...or....

Did you check your fuses, the "common" 20 amp(depending on your year, lower right corner)?? Do you hear a clicking when you hit the key?

Battery cable not loose, i have already tightened the starter connections, but i do not hear "clicking" when i turn her over, i hear nothing!

74-260 by the way.

it was the power wire to the coil or the ground i cant remember old age i guess but the car wouldnt do a damn thing till i hooked it back up

The 260 also had some cursed "anti-theft" i think they called it- the seatbelts had to be hooked, tranny in neutral, maybe something else i am forgetting. I seem to remember disconnecting the wires that are beneath the seats, and mine wouldn't turn over either, till i plugged them back together.

Been awhile, but you may check it out??

Otherwise i'd try jumping across the starter solenoid like mentioned earlier. Good luck!

Thanks all, i have unplugged the seat belt connection preeviuos to this, so that should not be it, i will jump the solenoid tomorrow, hopefully that is it!

Thanks all for the help!

sounds like the connection to the solenoid. My car used to do that all the time. All it did was make the "clicking" sound. I jiggled the connection and it fired right up. The connector had some crud on it, so it wasn't getting good conductivity. I've since put a new connector on it. It could be the starter itself though. Is your starter a rebuild??? I went through 3 of them before getting one that worked.

How does one decifer if it is the solenoid or the starter that has gone bad? I believe at this point that is where the problem is.

Thanks,

Zlish

Usually if the starter is the problem, when you hit the key, the starter will spin and not engage the flywheel. If it's the solenoid, it will be silent when you hit the key.
