Posted March 4, 200322 yr comment_28488 Quick question for you guys that have rebuilt your motors...My manual says that when installing the rear main bearing cap "the corners...should have an application of jointing compound..." at the 90* bends where the cap sits. I understand all this, but what is jointing compound? When I go to PepBoys or Advance, what should I be looking for specifically? March 4, 200322 yr comment_28490 I think they meant some type of sealant. I used a little bit (real little) of black RTV. After you torque down the cap bolts take a rag and wipe the excess that will squeeze out into the block. March 4, 200322 yr comment_28491 Yup, RTV silicon will work fine. Just run a small bead along the corner where the main cap meets the block. You should also put a small amount in the grooves of the main cap where the side seals install. You should put a small amount of oil on the side seals themselves so that they will slide into the groove easier.
