could have been an impurity in the metal that caused a local weak spot and then it lead to fracture. But I can forward this pic to some of my NASA failure engineers.

I had one break off like that when i was driving.... Luckily i was driving in a straight line in a residential street. Not on some busy street on a turning lane....

Turns out I didn't have 2 spare stub axles in my parts car. They were there, just severely damaged. Found some on Craigslist and both are good, here are some pictures of the stub axle I'll use, and the one that started this whole mess.
