77 280Z Fuel Gauge

Featured Replies

My fule gauge was working and then just stopped. I pulled the sender and It tested of 13 to 79 ohms. checked the fuse and it is ok, so anybody have any thoughts on what to check next. oh yea all the rest of the gauges or ok.

It sounds like you're doing good diagnostics so far. I suggest testing the fuel gauge out of the car. Hook up the Green, Yellow, and Black wires from the gauge to 2 lantern batteries and a 100 Ohm potentiometer as shown in the drawing. Vary the resistance on the potentiometer, and you should see the needle move.

Thanks it was also what i was thinking would be the next step. I have a dash cover which makes getting gauges out difficult, so I may try to do from the plug.

As long as you can still remove the panel with the vents & map light, you should be able to remove the gauges that way...unless you have AC.

MY fuel gauge (1976) stopped working about two weeks ago. I pulled it out to replace it with one from another car, checked the various circuits to see where the problem was and couldn't find any. Put the old one back in and it worked correctly. I don't know if the connector just worked itself loose (we were in the first really cold weather of the year) or the needle just got stuck and it jarred free when I took the gauge out.

Thanks for your help I got it working. All i did was clean all the connectors in including the fuse box connection and it started working.
