airdamn installation

Featured Replies

Just ordered a airdamn from MSA and while looking at the instructions I noticed they talk about tape being applied to the part. What kind of tape and where is this tape applied? I am really looking forward to getting this on just want to make sure I get it right. I searched but could find the answer hopefully I didn't miss it. Thanks in advance for the help. Oh yea this is a on a 71 240z and the urathane airdamn.

Don't know about the tape, but do have a tip.

If you paint it, leave the lower lip or lower 1/2" unpainted. That way when it scrapes or bumps-up against a concrete wheel stop or curb, the is no scratched paint.

I did not put the one that is on my car, but there is a plastic cover which covers up the holes where the sides of the bumper connect to the body. On my car it looks like these are attached with double sticky tape. In the picture below, it is the piece that is shaped like the state of Oklahoma. Yours may have a similar part.

Also, see the note on leaving the bottom of the dam unpainted or painted in a way that is easy to repair. That was done by putting a floor jack under the lip.

3M VHB tape. Be sure to mock up the installation carefully and take care to trim the part as necessary before you paint or attach the part to the car perminently. These urethane kit parts can be a PITA to get right. Take your time, measure twice cut once. Use the VHB to hold the part in place then install the mechanical fasteners working from the center out.

Thanks for the help guys. I don't think I am going to paint it, but if I do I will leave the lip unpainted. I am going to be taking this slow as I don't want it to look bad. I am about to start taking the stock peices off so I can see what all I have to do to get it mounted. So is there any particular place to put the tape or just like one strip in the spots that contact the body?

Wow wonder what I was thinking when I spelled it like that. Oops.

Hmm I didn't put any tape on mine.. but it's holding up pretty well, no flexing when I'm driving (so I'm told)...

I didnt use tape. I just mounted to the holes that held the factory lower valence onto the car. Solid as a rock.

One good thing about the 3M VHB tape (the gray variety) water will not be able to collect at the conection, just one less place to rust.

The VHB (very high bond) tape spreads the stress load over the length of the joint, less likelihood of cracks at the fastener locations.

That too, good point. It also dampens vibration and will protect the painted surfaces from wear at the contact points. If you really think about it, I would use the tape.
