Oh, I get it now. The exhaust fills the tank with CO or CO2 ( no oxygen- no explosion), so you know it won't blow up- assuming you immediately cap off any holes so air can't get back in.

I like the dry ice idea better. It pressurizes the gas tank with CO2 for sure, even after you seal the holes. You would cap all but a small hole, after putting some dry ice in, then let the dry ice force the air (oxygen) out, and finally seal the last hole.

Using the dry ice method, how would you know all the air was out, diferent odor? I know you will eventually see the dry ice 'fog' spilling out of the last hole...

On the tank, if all of the holes are closed except the vent line, and the tank is right side up, it will be full of CO2 and devoid of O2 when the white plume comes out of the vent line.
