Stock 71 240z engine pictures

I'm looking for detailed pics of a truly stock 1971 engine... restored to stock is fine too.

I am getting a 71 that I need to just get running before I consider upgrades to the engine and I want o be able to see what is missing or has been modified...

These are pics of what I have...

My dad informed me that all the smog stuff was removed from this one. I had forgotten about that.

Thanks for the before AND after pics... can you (or your dad) tell me what all was removed and what was done, if anything, to compensate? Alternate routing of vac lines? Carb or timing adjustments?

Has it been a "successful" desmog?

Mark, the emission controls on a '71 240Z are simple, with few parts, and really very little effect on how the car runs. Looking at the pictures of yours, it has already been de-smogged. On your car the smog pump and associated plumbing has already been removed, and the air injection on the exhaust manifold has been capped. The vacuum ports on the manifold balance tube have been capped off where the anti-backfire valve (for the air injection) and throttle opener have been removed. Generally, no carb adjustments are necessary, or even desirable.

So I'd say it's done, and not to worry about it. Nothing additional is needed. You could remove the air injection rail from the exhaust manifold and plug the holes for appearance sake, but it doesn't hurt anything where it's at, and chances are that it'll be rusted in place and not easily removable anyway.

Thanks guys... I've been on this forum for 2 days and I've already learned a whole lot... I WOULD like to clean up the caps (the plumbing pipe cap looks bad) and take out the air rail (if it'll come out - a job for PB Blaster no doubt). Are there known plug sizes and/or sources for nice looking plugs?

IIRC, the plugs need to be BSP thread (British Standard Pipe).

But in my experience on these, if the first fitting you try doesn't break loose fairly easily, you may as well stop there and not waste any time on it. If they are rusted, no amount of PB Blaster or whatever will get them out. I'll echo the comment above - you'll probably either want to live with it as is, or swap to a header. If either of the manifold studs at the ends of the exhaust manifold are broken or bent, definitely don't waste your time and plan for a header, as that is an indication that the manifold has warped.
