What does 1977 280z shift knob look like? (original)

Is it made of wood or wrapped in black leather? Anyone have a photo of a stock one?

All the knobs I've seen are different from each other, so I can't tell what it originally suppose to look like.

The 1977 zcar knob was black plastic with a green shift pattern for a 4 speed and red shift pattern for a 5 speed. See attached pic.

I believe the 280Z shift knob illustrated in ZCurves post is a later style, used on 5-speeds manufactured from 01/78, the part number being 32865-U4200. The later style shift knob is not split into three (possibly leather-stitched) segments like the earlier style red-topped shift knob illustrated in the attachments below (factory fitted to my late 1977 built car). The earlier part number is 32865-U4100 and runs up to a 12/77 manufacture date. My car is a UK model, and in this case the earlier style shift knob was used on cars manufactured from 08/73 (the very great majority, and I believe all of the later UK cars were factory five speeds).

Those pictures look like the knob on my car (77 5 speed), except for the shift diagram because mine is missing.

My original 5 speed shift knob was not leather. I think it was plastic? It's been years.

Having had a closer look at the 5-speed shift knob, I believe it is actually manufactured from hard rubber, rather than stitched leather, similar to the perimeter of late model S30 steering wheels. If one looks closely at the first photograph in post #7 above, there is a moulding line about half way between the top and bottom of the shift knob.

Hard rubber.....Yeah, that's more like it.

Although I am not suggesting that the knob shown in the photographs below is a perfect match for either of the stock 280Z red-topped shift knobs, the part may still be available in the US as an alternative to the NLA original. As you can see, the red shift pattern insert is identical to the original, but the body finish is different. Part number is C2865-U4200. Hope this helps.
