MEMORIES,.... MEMORIES,

I passed my first Army license on one of those old short wheelbase workhorses. They'd go ANYWHERE. On one of MANY cross country scrub bashes, (I think it was waaaay back in '71), a convoy of about four of the short w/base and 6 or 7 long w/base L/rovers tackled the worst that the Army's Shoalwater Bay Training Area could throw at us. Up, over and accross steep inclines, bulldust, creek crossings, mud holes, you name it, scrub bashing all the way in 4wd for about 5 days including night driving.

My imperfect memory tells me that three of the short w/base, (one was mine), and only two of the long w/base made it all the way without needing to be rescued by the recovery team. Ahhhhh, ... yes. Them were the days.

Thanks Ben.

Rick.

What engine did they have?

They had a big OHV inline 6. It was known as the 'P' engine. 4 liter torquey low compression engine with more stroke than bore. They may have had other engines but the ones that were here in the US (61-69) had that one.
