Repairing 240Z combination switch

Featured Replies

This is an writeup I posted a while back in a regular thread but it should really be here in the articles forum.

Edit: changed attachment from pdf to zipped pdf.

Repairing 240Z combination.zip

Hi MikeW.

I'm having trouble with the .pdf file.

Selecting it only partially downloads and displays the file, and "save target as" only gets 139kb of it. Is it me or is something amiss with the file/link?

Thanks in advance.

Rob, send me a PM with your email adress in it and I will forward the file to you. I just downloaded it.

The download works fine for me in Firefox. In IE when I click on the link it complains. However, in IE I can right click and choose "Save target as ..." it downloads only part of the file as you say. I don't think I did anything wrong with the upload. If the system doesn't allow PDFs or spaces in file names, for example, it shouldn't have accepted it. I've edited the first post and changed the PDF to the same file zipped up and it seems to work fine. Let me know if you're still having problems.

I've had difficullties D/L .pdf files here previously. Haven't figured it out, but anyway, I used IE6 to D/L this particular .pdf file yesterday and it worked for me.

Mike, you are my HERO! My lights were working intermittently, I'd have to click them off and on, off and on, turn the switch slowly, until it worked. I cleaned the switch via your writeup, and my lights work on the first click!

Thanks!

Mike,

Will your headlight switch repair instructions work for an '82 280zx as well?

I doubt it. I suspect that a 280ZX switch is completely different but I have not experience with them.

Hey! I did my combo switch using your guide, my headlights now work great!

But my wipers are still kaput, if I take apart the other circuit board, what will I see?

I suspect that any wiper problem is on the motor/linkage end of things. There have been other posts here on fixing that. It's something I need to do myself but I keep putting it off since I never drive in the rain. If it is the switch you might be able to fix it the same way but I have no experience with that. If you decide to take it on yourself you might consider documenting the process for others. Before doing that I'd bypass the switch and see if the wipers work or not.

I took apart the wiper side of the switch, and cleaned things up. The switch is pretty much a mirror image of the lighting side, and all the instructions apply. I did take a couple pics, and will try to post them later.

I did this 30 years ago, now finally got around to making up a relay harness. But my signals quit on the 1800 mile drive home from Z Con 09. The same procedure did the job there too, but you cannot swap the contacts, they are identical.
