Wont rev past 2000

Featured Replies

Hi, i currently own a 1972 datsun 240z with 55k original miles. Restoration is in progress and moving fast, however i just ran into a problem. The car will not rev past 2000 rpms, and when it reaches 2k it sputters and runs terribly. I had just replaced the condenser and thought that i may have swapped the distributor rotar 180* off but i didnt. Any suggestions? it ran fine with the previous condenser

try the previous one and see what happens...not out of the question to have a doa one.

My brother had a problem that was simular in his 95 5.0 mustang. It would rev to 3k and jump to 5k-6k and make no power. It was discovered that a valve spring was broken and a few others were loose or something like that. Check all the valve tran and see if everything looks good.

Do you notice the lights dim in the car when you have the problem? I had the almost same problem and it turned out to be a bad alternator (Starving the car of spark). Just a suggestion.

nah the car doesnt dim or anything like that. i think it must have sumthin to do with the timing. I checked the valves and they are mint. I should probably swap the old condesner back in. By the way the new condenser is smaller than my old one, could that be a problem or does it not really matter? Thanks for your responses i hope we figure this problem out.

ok, well swappin the old condenser back on didnt do anything, and its still not reving past 2000. Any suggestions? im lost now =(

i had the same problem but I was running wayy too rich.. so I leaned it out some.. works fine now

what will it do when it reaches 2K? does it sputter or does it sound like a rev limiter?

problem solved guys, the timing was off and its all right now... thing runs really nice now, thanks for the help guys

LOL i had a similar problem in my 240z after I rebuilt my distributor i was in a rush and didn't set the timing with the gun and thought "she'll be alright" but it just didn't wanna rev and you could smell the burning smell of detonation LOL.

Next day I sorted her out and she drove better than she ever had. :)

FWIW the condensor should say how many uF it's rated at as long as they are the same i don't see a problem. might pay to keep the old one spare in the glove box as you never know.
