Steering rack grease fitting

Featured Replies

While I was rebuilding the front end I removed the steering rack to replace the bushings and paint it. Stupid me I forgot to remove the plastic grease fitting and it broke off :stupid: Anyway, does anyone know where I an get one? I checked Victoria British, MSA and they don't carry them. Danny's Datsuns quoted me 25$ for one. I was thinking about just putting a bolt in it for that much.

THANKS

I'm not sure but I think the early Z's came with a bolt already in there. Someone must have replaced it with a grease fitting. Anyway you can pick them up at any autoparts store. Just make sure it's metric. If you can't find one let me know and I'll mail you one (for free).

Early Z's (71-72) that I have seen had the plastic reservior from the factory (I haven't owned a 70) The 73 240Z that I owned had a zerk fitting in place of this reservoir. (It may have been installed by a dealer, I don't know)

Those reservoirs were/are easily damaged and have been NLA from Nissan for quite some time.

I could use a couple of the plastic reservoirs if anybody has some. They were original to the series one.

Shows you what I know, :stupid: I was thinking he was talking about the zerk fitting.

My 70’ had a plastic one, until I broke it getting the rack out. I put in a zerk for now until I find another.

Does the "zerk" act like a grease resevoir? If it does where can I get one? I would rather have something functional than just a bolt, but I need to cap it to keep dirt out. Any thoughts...

Thanks

A Zerk acts like a grease fitting:

A device that seals in and allows the addition of more grease, or some other type of lubricant, to cushion two moving parts, allow them to move freely, and prevent them from wearing each other away. Found on ball joints, steering knuckles, tie-rod ends. Also called "zerk fitting."
