Z racks

Featured Replies

Are the steering rack ratios different in a 240Z to a 260Z?

My 240 is 2.5 turns lock to lock

The 260 is 2.75

Is this the same for everyone else?

Steve

Hi Steve,

Rack ratios changed in August 1973 according to the official Nissan data for the RHD models that I have to hand.

The 2+2 ( 2/2 in Japan ) models also had their own specific Steering Rack part number from October 1973.

There was also an 'Optional' Steering Rack available for the European market cars up to July 1973, which I presume also had a different ratio.

As you have noted, it seems that the ratios became progressively 'slower'............

None of these to be confused with the shorter Option Steering Knuckles, which effectively 'quickened' the steering ratio by changing the rack's leverage on the hubs.

Hope that's of use.

Cheers,

Alan T.

Thanks Alan

Just trying to decide what to use if I build a new Z rally car.

This interested me as my current 1600 rally has 3.2 turns which is really alot of work behind the wheel,I'm told IF I can find a 2.5 works steering box it would be $1000 !

Shorter steering arms if I can find them would be even better.

ps Alan I returned your pm but your box is full

  • 3 weeks later...

quick question about the shorter steering knuckles...everyone states 'for competition off road use only'.....i'm going to be replacing cartridges/springs/ball joints/tie rods and want to put these in....should I be concerned with these disclaimers or should I just get 'em? Probably just get 'em but an opinion from experience would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Dog

I have no idea why the disclaimer is there, but I had them on a 240Z for 5 years before I sold it. They were great. Quickened the steering quite a bit.

I have them on my daily driver last three years. No worries. Allows me to make a 90 and - almost - maintain the "10 - 2" hand position.

While we're on the topic of racks, does $215 sound like a reasonable price for a rebuilt/remanufactured steering rack for a 240z? they want a $50 core charge and don't include tie rod ends... I've looked around on the net this afternoon and so far that's the best (only) one...

Others?
