VQ35DE motor in to a '73 Z???

VQ35DETT

Recommended Posts

Any thing is possible...

Why not get the VG30DETT engine from the Z32 300zx..

The price of the VQ35DE would out weigh the results.... seriously.. cheaper soloution again would be too get a L28 work that sucker :)

I take it you havent thought this conversion through very much..

Another thing... the V6 engine is very wide dont know if it would fit that weigh... lenth is no problem..

From what I understand, the VQ is narrower than the VG. (60deg. vs 90 deg.) That should take care of the width problem. Also the VQ has an aluminum block vs the VG's cast iron. That should make the weight an almost non issue considering that both of them are lighter than a Chevy V8. Like 280ZXfever anything is possible. Many things to consider, however. Cost of the engine, how much modification, engine management, transmission, etc. But, when finished, it would be interesting!

Thanks fellas for replying back to my crazy idea. Definitely something to research. Money is definitely an issue! A project like this would definitely eat up my pocket. But if someone does have the money, that would be nice to see em put it through. Make it happen! Would seriously eat up the new Z33's!!! More power, much lighter weight, and a super duper suspension! That's all!

*Can you almost imagine it? 6 ITB's (individual throttle bodies) sticking out of the hood in a V pattern?!? Hah! I'm still dreaming...thanks guys for the opinions!

:ermm: Hi,

I have been looking into this idea as well.

I have had a wrecker measure up the VQ35 motor for me. The width is 700mm including the manifolds, the length is 500mm from belhousing to the water pump pulley and the height is 730mm to the top of the inlet cover.

The height of the L series motor is 680mm !

The problem is the height as I don't want any stinking bonnet scoops.

Does any one have any ideas on a custom inlet? Or a dry sump?

I only found this out yesterday.

I am dissapointed.

Any ideas anyone?

The 50mm heigth difference is just a shade under 2 inches. Since you'd have to design the motor mounts for this swap, if they were designed such that the VQ could sit as low as possible, I think the hood would close. The highest point would be the center of the engine and that is where the hood is highest. I would also be curious about the oil pan confriguation.

I know this topic has come up before on HybridZ.org try a search there.

If i was going to spend that kind of money on a conversion then i would do an LS1 or 2JZ conversion, but that is just me.

Since i am not going to spend that money its L28eT for me.

  • 5 months later...

My G35 6spd was stolen a while ago. The interior was burnt to a hulk, but the motor remained intact. I should have found out how much insurance was willing to sell it back to me for. Damn. If it was cheap, I could have bought it back and see if it was "even" possible. And if not, I could have just sold the motor. Damn!
