I had that feeling of “car” excitement yesterday. I went to the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles and registered and plated my Z. It was last plated in 1976, 36 years ago. I had to call Les to get the odometer reading for the title update. I did not realize what a moment that would be. I was like a kid in a candy store and that was just getting the car plated, I still haven’t seen or touched it. This has been a long year for me and this is going to be a genuine pick me up. I wanted vanity plates for the car but all three of my choices had been taken. I will be watching for you at Indiana events!!! 1st choice DATSUN Z (taken) – 2nd choice 72 240Z (taken) – 3rd choice 1972 Z (taken). My plate will read OUR 240Z;) I went on line to BRE on line and purchased a cover today and had it shipped to Classic Datsun Motorsports. I am still looking for a CAR BAG. I hope the car stays on the latest completion schedule:paranoid: and that I will be able to enter it in the show at Z CON. Not knowing anything about car shows I am trying to figure:ermm: out what class it would be best to enter it in. I had Les put it back as it came off the showroom floor. Which would be all original with the exception of a period correct color matched “spook”, the original American Racing Libre wheels (restored), color matched racing mirrors on both doors (similar to the black pearl mirrors) and a set of factory accessory 240Z stripes. I also had Les leave off the smog pump. With the exception of the smog pump this is how the car was presented new on the showroom floor when purchased at Joliet Datsun in Joliet, IL. For stock class the rules read “as it left the factory”. I don’t know how much this would take away from the cars chances in stock class. Anyone out there that can help me with this I would appreciate it. I am waiting for more photos of the progress and hope to be able to share them soon. It is finally coming together after 36 years!

Les gave me a call a few day ago with some good news. He wants to meet me at Z-Con in Phoenix next month. He believes my car will be finished and I could pick it up there. I hope I can make that work.:paranoid: I don’t know if I should enter it in the show or just come take a look at all of the eye candy and pick up the car. It is a total of 600 miles off of my trip if picked up in Vista but I was looking forward to seeing the west coast. I should have some current photos of the progress in the near future.

I remember the news reporting the installation of some infrastructure for hydrogen fuel stations back a few year ago. The infrastructure is limited to approximately 19 states. California has the most hydrogen fuel stations with an estimated 21 to 50 with the remaining 18 states having 10 or less hydrogen fuel stations. The point being that his Z may be converted to hydrogen. There are no hydrogen fuel stations listed in Oregon. JLP http://www.afdc.energy.gov/afdc/fuels/hydrogen_locations.html

    Latest photos of the interior.
  6. I believe that this will be my next car purchase as well. I, like you, will wait and let them shake it out a bit first. jlp
  7. I had the pleasure of seeing the Subaru BRZ with the emphasis being on “Z” it truly reminded of the first time I saw a Datsun Z. I believe this comes close to what an updated early Z would be today. jlp

I hope to have time while on vacation to expand on this thread in the way that I started it bur for now time limits me to posting short updates on the restoration progress. Classic Datsun Motorsports began the interior this week; I have attached the latest photos.

Thanks Arne, In searching the E-net I read that someone in Flordia had reproduced the stripes and does so when enough sets are ordered. But I do not know the name or location. JLP

I just got off the phone with on of our members and although it is a long shot I want to try and help him out. He is looking for a set of original NOS stripe set for the 1978 Black Pearl edition. As I said I know this is a long shot but it is always amazing what some members have or have access to. They would be used to have a set of reproduction stripes made and then returned. Any one??? JLP;)
  12. I just posted a want ad in the Datsun Classified Want Ad's. While assembling my R180 Differential I found a crack in the right side cover (retainer) I need a right or both they are the aluminum covers that each stub axle go into they are held in place with 5 bolts. Thanks JLP

  14. You really need to get a wiring schematic. I noticed that the white with red trace wire to the alternator was connected to the wrong place on the original photo it was corrected in the next photo of the alternator. With these mistakes you may have damaged some major components.

I am in the process of getting my car trailer ready for the trip to VISTA. I have sandblasted, primed, painted and undercoated the bottom and I am now working on the top side. I purchased a new set of wheels and tires and I am having a custom wind deflector made. I have included the latest photos of the progress on the restoration of my Z. Paint and body complete now for the details!

  22. Early 70's Datsun Comp Mikuni 44’s, one project finished, assemble complete! Upgraded throttle linkage including removal of nylon bushings then line bore to receive needle bearings. Very smooth action! I will have to install the needle and seats once they arrive. Next project? Assemble R180 LSD?? Have Mini Lites powder coated??
