  1. i took my old filter and cut out the air horns and made them work inside the K & N filters that i used. i was missing the top part of the filter box anyway, and didn't mind cutting out the air horns. very easy to do, and no cost, other than the K & N filters, and a couple of hours of your time.
  2. yesterday with sunshine and high 60 to low 70 temps, i left the z under the cover and rode around town in the roadster with the top off. it is a 1969 2000 with solex carbs, b series cam, headers, and k & N filters. reallly fun to drive, and most folks have never seen one around here. would love to have several of the cars pictured or described, but i am running out of driveway space to park.
  3. seems like we did this awhile back, but i don't mind to give a short life history of my z addiction. i am 53 and bought my first z after former President Carter had interest rates around 21% back in 80 or 81. it was a 79 280ZX and i loved that car. and paying that kind of interest, you know i wanted it bad. sold it after getting married, in 82. fast forward 20 years or so, and we begin another love with the Z. when my daughter got to high school, all of a sudden the old 92 Sentra that was handed down to her wasn't cool anymore, so the wife and i thought it would be neat to put her in a Z, like we had way back when we first started dating and honeymooned in. not finding one nice enough, we switched from looking for a 79 to a later model, 88 SS shiro. i flew out to Sacremento, CA and drove that one back. the only problem was, after driving all those miles coming back to Arkansas, i fell in love all over again with the Z, and returning, i told the daughter sorry, but this is too fast, too rare, and its' mine. we found another Z down in Dallas, a 93 300ZX na, and again, i flew down, bought it, and drove it back. and everything worked out great, because my daughter liked the looks and ride of the 93 better than the SS. she drove it for several years, and then sold it to her fiancee'. who still has it and loves it also. my daughter is now in a '93 300 vert, and it is a pretty nice Z, after getting new leather on the seats, and a new top. the SS was sold, and is now in another Z fanatic's hands, and i bought a '74 260Z 2+2 which looks ruff, but has a rebuilt engine, 5 speed tranny, and four wheel disc brakes. one day it will be in the paint shop and have new interior, and it will be a really sweet ride. my oldest son, inherited the old '92 Sentra with around 400 thousand miles on it, and was driving it back and forth to college, until he was hit head on, and totaled the car. accident wasn't his fault and he is now in a '02 Sentra SE R, and loves that car. i figure one day the 260 will be his. i also just recently purchased a '69 2000 roadster, and it is my pride and joy. it is so neat, cruising around town, and getting all the questions as most people in these parts have never seen one of those and didn't even know it existed. i have one more son, and i figure that he will end up with that one day, as right now, he loves to cruise in it with dad. the wife is driving a '01 Maxima SE and she says if they ever come back with a manual tranny like she drives now, she might be tempted to trade. and lastly, i work out of a '01 Frontier, which has rolled over 380 thousand miles on it after buying it new. all vehicles in the driveway are Nissan or Datsuns, and last Thanksgiving, when everyone was home, i pulled them all out in the front lawn and got this shot. wow, i just went on and on and ,,,,,,,,, are you sorry you asked?:classic:
  4. my fan motor runs but squeals really loud when it is first turned on. where would a guy find this on Ebay? thanks for the help.
  5. 240ZGL you headlight covers look awesome. Will i would like a set as soon as you have them available. have you any idea how much?
  6. the other day i took my two boys out to eat in my z, and on the way home we passed the skate board park. the skateboarders noticed the car and one of them yelled cool car. my younger son, said they were being sarcastic. i said nope. they like the z, even though it looks so bad needing paint. my kids always give me a hard time about the car. i keep telling them when it is finished i am going to make them beg me to let them ride in it for all of the crap they have given me all this time.
  7. my Nissan dealer has a brake lathe that turns the rotors while still on the car, so that everything is true to the hub. is this really the best way to do the rotors? they claim that this is the only way to guarantee no run out or shimmy when braking.
  8. and then you read this where a test was done by a Las Vegas TV station and they claim it worked great, but couldn't get Popular Mechanics to even look at their results. http://www.kvbc.com/Global/story.asp?S=4129768 if i could have it installed and see actual results before paying for it, i would do it in a heart beat. but $1350 total price quoted, with new plugs and oxygen sensor, has me afraid to risk the cash, after reading some of the web sites that came up on the google search. thanks for the help.
  9. working as a wholesale sales rep, i travel about a thousand miles per week. when i got into this business, i could fill my old sentra up and drive on about $10 to $12 dollars a day. at the current cost of $4 per gallon, on the same amount of fuel, it takes about $50 per day and i pay for my own expenses. my Frontier pickup gets about 26 mpg and i have an appointment with a mechanic to add a new system that adds hydrogen to the engine and he guarantees at least a 25% increase in fuel mileage and up to 30% more horsepower. i figure i can save enough in fuel expense to pay for the unit and instalation in 5 to 6 months, if gas doesn't go any higher. i am not knowledgeable enough to explain the system but if you want to read up on it here is the link. http://www.theautoguy.tv/pages/aquatune.asp
  10. i have worked out of my '74 260 2+2 several times this spring while we had cool weather to enjoy, since i don't have my a c working yet. i am around 220 pounds, and carry a catalog around that weighs 50 pounds, along with samples, other literature and such. as you know, the 2+2 is also heavier. i leaned out the round top S U carbs almost to the point of making the car run rough, and the best i could get on hiway mileage was 26 mpg. adjusting them just a little richer to give the car a little more power, and it runs much better, i now average 24 mpg. i do push the engine hard thru the gears, and i am sure that is not helping the mpg average, but man i like the sound of the engine running up the rpms. i have checked the speedometer and odometer against my watch and both are very accurate, running a mile a minute. all of my smog controll items were removed in the rebuild. new bearings on all of the wheels, along with K & V round filters, and flowmaster muffler. i also swapped the tranny out for a five speed which i really like alot better. everything is new regarding plug wires, plugs, distributor cap, and such, and i don't know of anything else to try. i was told by my mechanic that rebuilt the engine and heads to expect close to thirty mpg, but i don't ever think i will come close to that. i also tried both regular and premium gas and can't tell any difference in gas mileage between the two, although the car does perform better with the premium, as most stations around here still offer 93 octane.
  11. are you running the original pump? it might need cleaning out also. i didn't trust my old pump after sitting for twenty plus years, and changed out the original for a Holley from MSA. it is noisey, but has never given me any problems. i only hear it when sitting still.
  12. so, there wouldn't be any gain for adding an ignitor or hotter coil? just wondering, thanks.
  13. i had so much fun working out of mine last Monday, i decided to run it again yesterday. we had great weather in the ozarks yesterday, high of 68 and sunny. it was a beautiful drive with all of the dogwoods blooming. with rain in the forecast today, the z sits under it's car cover. :disappoin
  14. my son's baseball team practiced Sunday afternoon with snow flakes flying around. we have freeze warnings out for this morning and checking the temp they nailed it as it is 32 here now. i didn't get my lazy arse out and cover up my grape vines that are just now coming out, or the wife's flowers so we may have everything ruined. the good news is that it will be sunny and a high of 56 today, so guess what i am working out of? :classic:
  15. i for one, am very impressed with your work, and wonder if you have thought of going into a refurbishing business and making some serious money off of this? or maybe offering all of the needed parts with instructions on how to install. if a solar panel was added to this system, to constantly recharge the batteries from the sun as you drive, or even parked, make this more user friendly for those of us that travell in our work? i know it would ruin the looks of the car to have something on the roof, hood,or back glass, but then again, it could be laying in the rear catching the sun's rays coming thru the glass. on average i run about 300 miles per day in my sales calls, and i have not seen anyone boasting that kind of mileage out of electrics yet. filling up forty to forty five dollars per day in gas, is taking all of the fun out of my job.
  16. Fun in MY Z, were you living in Arkansas about twenty years ago when we had two foot of snow on the ground, or just too young to remember? I sure remember it, since i sat at the house for almost three weeks, not being able to get out and work, and being on straight comission, the following month was rough. several folks, going out to check the mail, feed animals, or just taking out the trash, had to be rescued after sliding downhill on ice, and not able to climb out. that was one winter i will never forget. for the most part our winters are mild compared to you folks up north. each to his own, but i will take a few bad cold weeks of winter and the heat of our summers any day over all of the snow and ice that you have to deal with all winter. there was very little downtime on the z sitting during cold and wet or snowy days this winter. and that works out just fine for me.
  17. wow, go back up with a GPS and write down the location of some of those so that someone can venture in there and bring out some of those old cars.
  18. thats' a nice ride. goodluck with your z
  19. that sounds like mine. when we went back with a trailor, the left rear wheel was frozen, and we tried rocking it for quite awhile trying to free it up after sitting unmoved for the last twenty something years and got nowhere. out of desperation, we removed the wheel and broke the drum away from the hub and replaced the wheel so that we could winch it up on the car hauler. at the time i hadn't decided to do the disc brake conversion, but figured that a new drum wouldn't be that much. glad to hear that you saved the car from the crusher. goodluck on the rebuild.
  20. has a MRI scheduled today and then we see about surgery. thanks for the reply. xray you are correct, after talking with my Nissan dealer here, we are not interested in that car after all. Nissan won't honor warranty on any vehicle with a salvage title, even one with just 116 miles. the special edition, comes with alloy wheels, abs brakes, fog lights, rear spoiler, and a premium sound system that my son has decided on it being the best for his money. finding one will be on EBay or Auto Trader so we are still looking. thanks for the reply.
  21. my son coming home from college was hit head on and his '92 Sentra was totaled. he is banged up but not seriously hurt, thanks to wearing his seat belt. right now he is walking, and more worried about getting his ride back, than he is about his knee that still bothers him. he is wanting to replace the car with another Sentra for the gas mileage and awesome reliability of the last one holding up for so long. we had just swapped out the engine and tranny, hoping to get him thru college with this. there is a 2006 Sentra special edition on EBay item number 130199188931 that has caught his eye, but it has a salvage title. i was stunned to find it with just 116 miles on it. seller claims that it was hit just three days after the original owner bought it. the price is right if the car is as nice as he claims, but i can't risk buying this and find out that i was taken. if anyone might have the time, to contact this man, and set up a meet to inspect the car, possibly drive it, i would really appreciate it. would even be glad to pay you for your trouble. would like to know asap as the auction ends soon. thanks for the help
  22. i went with a set of Tokico struts and springs also from EBay. the car looks alot better, and the ride is not too harsh. i did go back and add bump steer spacers to re align the correct height on the steering and that helped with the cornering. you might find they offer free shipping, like me which makes this an even sweeter deal.
  23. 300 is a steal if that car isn't a rust bucket, and runs. i would look at all of the usuall suspect places for rust, and if the car is clean, try not to break your wrist reaching for your wallett.
  24. a club member found this car sitting, and stopped to check it out. talking with the previous owner,he learned that the car was going to be sold. taking pictures, getting the owner's name and number,he posted the info incase any club member might be interested. the history of the car, if correct as told by the p o is that it was being driven by the Datsun owner's son, and two years old when he bought it. the car was driven for approximately ten years, showing 108 k miles on the odometer when i looked at it. the p o had a wreck, sliding on ice into the back of the car in front of him, and then had someone rear ended him as well. he claimed the damage was minor. the hood was rolled under and both bumpers missing from the car. with the clutch slipping at the time,he decided to just pull it into the garage and fix it back up one day. and it sat for around twenty years, untouched, until i found it and bought it. the p o had purchased new bumpers for both front and rear, and had never installed them. i got them still in the package, along with a over ride bumper for the rear, when i purchased the car. we had to take the rear wheel off and bust the drum, as it was frozen and wouldn't roll, so that the car could be loaded on the trailer. i had an idea of throwing fresh gas in it, new plugs, and rebuilding the brakes, along with a new clutch, and driving it right away. how wrong i was in that i have now spent two years fixing and replacing parts, so that i could have a daily driver to depend on. i wanted to do everything as best i could, and pay for as i went, so that when i finished, i would have a nice car, and not owe any money on it. so that explains the time period of getting it driveable. i was extremely lucky in finding a club member doing a v 8 conversion, who had a engine with round top carbs for free, all i had to do was drive two hours to pick it up. and he even loaned me his cherry picker to load it. we decided to go ahead and just rebuild his engine, since we were swapping the four speed tranny for a five speed, i saw no reason to worry with keeping the original engine. i know there are club members rolling their eyes, wondering why i have ruined an all original, numbers matching car, and all i can say in my defense, is that i wanted a good dependable car, which would easily cruise on the interstate, and handle these ozark hills and curves. at the time, i was driving a '88 300 ZX SS, and loved it. it was a really nice car, but the wife didn't see it as something we needed since it only was a two seater. we still have one child at home. also, i had the wife driving a '92 Nissan Sentra at the time, one i had worked out of for the last ten years, and handed down to my daughter, who now drives a '93 300 ZX vert. a deal we made, the wife and i, buying a new home, making do with an old car, that lasted all of two years, and she was not happy with the Sentra. so i sold the SS on Ebay and purchased the wife a used Maxima SE, which worked out great so far. and now my older son is driving that Sentra with 400 k miles on it back and forth to college. back to the 260Z, hope i didn't bore you too much with all of the history and such. now we took the donated engine, tore it down, and had it boiled. it cleaned up really nice, and everything looked good as far as a rebuild. new time kit installed, and all of the originall parts were put back in. we did have the head machined, and valve seats installed for unleaded fuel. the suspension was tackled next. i had ordered a set of Tokico struts and springs off of Ebay. also a set of polyurethane bushings from Black Dragon. we dropped everything out from underneath and cleaned it up with a wire wheel brush on a grinder, and sprayed it all flat black. the car being wrecked, we found more damage than i had been told about by the p o but after an extra day of beating, pulling, and such we had everything back straight and all was good on the frame.
  25. yes Mike that was the guy. he also had another set listed at the same time for the three screw also,if i remember right.
