Smog Canister
Only the carburated cars had the smog (air) pumps. And neither my '75 280Z or '78 280Z had catalytic converters. Only the california cars, as you note. All the electronic controls and sensors on the fuel injected cars are supposed to keep it burning efficiently under "all" conditions, and thus don't need the smog pump, and passed the pre-1979 emissions laws without the cat.

Welding advice
I have the Lincoln Pro 135 that I bought at Lowe's for $417. It came with everything needed to do gas welding except the bottle. It is a nice little machine that will do anything on the car I might want and is supposed to do up to 3/8th inch stuff, although I haven't needed it for anything that big yet. And no rewiring...

1971 dashboard for sale on Ebay
I learned that as well. I never bid an even dollar amount. If I estimate that the most I'd pay is $75, then I bid $75.01, or maybe $75.51 if it looks like things will increment by $0.50. Just because of this :classic: . I've been guilty of sniping a time or two as well . Benefits of a cable modem, I guess...

1971 dashboard for sale on Ebay
Too true. No need to be sorry. It's yours, and you should do with it as you will. If someone on the board here wants to make you a good offer, then you can stop the auction early if you decide to take it. If nobody wants to give you $100, then either someone off board gets it for > $100, or you get to keep it. Good luck! :classic:

1971 dashboard for sale on Ebay
I've noticed that a lot of things will sit on e-bay for quite a while and then suddenly generate a flurry of bids in the last few hours or minutes. Sharks converging, I suppose... I was watching a NOS antenna the other day that was around $100, and in the last 5 minutes went to $225. Crazy.

5speed tranny
On the '71 240Z that I switched from auto to manual, the pedal brackets were all there; just needed the pedal. The hole in the firewall for the clutch master cylinder was there - with a metal plate bolted over it. Just needed to remove and put in the cylinder. Pretty straight forward on that car.

OEM parts site
I've bought a gasket set and one of those crossmembers that 2ManyZ's was mentioning. $9.99 for the gaskets and $31 for the crossmember. I looked at the Heads, but the part number had N33 in it - is that an E88 head? Anyway, they've delivered and I have no complaints.

2 brackets...what are they for?
The plastic toolbox lids only fit the series 1 (read: one) Z's. They have a hinge that attaches with screws to the floor of the car behind the seats on the raised area (there should be brackets welded to the floor of the car) and then the two L-shaped brackets on the vertical wall behind the seats for the top of the toolboxes to be screwed into with a couple knurled knobs. If you have two lidded compartments on the luggage area floor just behind the seats, then you don't need the plastic toolboxes. I have attached a picture of the plastic toolbox floor brackets in my car behind the left hand drivers seat (circled). Note that my L-shaped bracket on the wall (see the black painted area) was removed by the previous owner. hope this helps.

Finally My 240z Video.
It'll be sweet when (and I say WHEN, not IF) I get it done. Right now I'm working two jobs and taking a graduate-level computer science class, so there just isn't much time left... Add three active children to the mix (all boys, so "Dad" gets to do most of the stuff with them), and I REALLY don't have any extra time. Ah well. They'll grow up and leave. The Z will still be there :classic: .

It's a nice ride - I love the sound. I'll be happy when mine will make ANY sound again .

Finally My 240z Video.
Works now with the install from your link. It appears as though they just put up a new download version on 9/2/2003 that is now called DivX51GAINBundle.exe or something close to that. Apparently they decided to no longer give it away free if you don't want GAIN garbage on your machine. I won't install anything that puts that adware/spyware/virus junk on my machine. If it does it in stealth mode, I get REALLY pissed. I had to put Adaware on my home machine because my kid downloaded something that installed GAIN. Not happy. Anyway, thanks for the link. Works now.

Finally My 240z Video.
I don't get any video - just audio. And if it needs the DivX codec, then I'm SOL, since to download the free version, you have to allow that stupid GAIN adware to infiltrate your computer. At least from what I see. If there's any way to get the codec without the virus software, I'd like to hear about it.

Options on a L series engine stand
All you need are the correct length bolts to attach it to the stand. Your transmission bellhousing bolts won't be long enough. Also, different stands have different length 'fingers', and so you have to match the bolts to the stand. I bought a set of bolts when I rebuilt a 280Z engine back in the '80s to use on a stand I bought from JC Whitney. Four months ago, I bought a stand from Harbor Freight, and found that the bolts that I still have now (I am a terrible pack rat) were too long to use on that stand with my 240Z engine. Had to buy new bolts. Not expensive, but get them before you lift out the engine and need to attach it to the stand!

Hand Throttle on Automatics?
Nope. In my car, which has the choke and throttle (I'm just missing the knob and throttle cable), the choke is on the left and the throttle on the right. Just like the picture. Thanks!

Hand Throttle on Automatics?
Great. Then at least we know that there is a part that was used in automatics that might work in a manual. Does it look like the attached pic that I found on the web?

Hand Throttle on Automatics?
Thanks for the info. I tried MSA - they still list it in their catalog and on their web site, but its NLA. Oh well. I'll try all the used sources I can think of and see what happens :classic: . All I really need is the cable and knob! I was asking about automatics because there seems to be a part listed that looks like it could be right, but was listed as for automatics. Any overseas Z guys have a hand throttle on their automatics? Thanks again.

MSA Replacement Fuse Box
For those of you with fried fuse boxes, and lots of money to spend, I was browsing around on MSA's site, and they are advertising a new, replacement, reengineered, "modern" fuse box replacement for 240Z's for $199. Supposedly has the stock connectors, correct wire colors, and either short or long pigtails. FYI.

An add for my car!
Considering that when I found it, it had been sitting outside for those two years (during Illinois winters), and the entire underside was packed with dead leaves, and there was a squirriel nest under the battery tray, and the window and hatch seals had been leaking....you get the idea. I suspect it was a lot better two years ago. I didn't pay him $6K, though :classic: .

An add for my car!
Amazing what you find if you dig around on this site. Here's an add for my car, two years before I bought it! http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&postid=1925#post1925

Hand Throttle on Automatics?
Interesting. If you can get the parts, it'd be easy to add. What I'm looking for, of course, are the parts to restore mine! All I really need is the handle and the cable. The rest is still there (although if I could find it, I'd take the whole assembly too!). I'll have to ask Enrique where he got the parts if he did... Thanks.

Hand Throttle on Automatics?
Anyone know if the hand throttle was installed on automatic-equipped cars, either in the US or anywhere else? Thanks.

been awhile, but I am back
I had a '75 280Z back in the mid 1980's. Ran great for me from '82 through '89. 2ManyZ's is right, though. Check for rust. Mine ended up with essentially no inner fenderwell at the left rear. Took off the left rear interior quarter plastic piece, and could see right out of the car through the wheel well. Exhaust fumes were terrible at that point. That's what made me look. FI was great, except the PO had hacked the wiring behind the dash, and after I had the car for a year or so, it caused a short that kiiled the engine and took Datsun 10 days to find and cost $600 (in 1982) to replace the airflow meter and the FI relay. That's not the car's fault, though. Overall it was a nice Z.
