What are you guys using for primer? Is it necessary to use a flexible primer?

Just out of curiosity, why dont you do a stroker?
  4. Has anyone seen these filler pieces between the headlight buckets and the airdam? I seen this car online and really like the look. They might be custom but I was wondering if anyone has seen them for sale.

Hello. I am in the process of repairing my dash as well and I just wanted to share something. I am using the Bondo brand bumper repair kit.(similar to SEM). Yesterday I had the dash laying on my bench about 4' high and this morning when i came out to the garage it was laying on the ground. I thought for sure it was ruined. To my surprise it held up perfectly. No cracks at all. This stuff is strong and I see this as a permanent fix.
  6. Wow looks great!. I also have a 75 and I am definitely in the "middle mile". Thanks for the inspiration. Do you have any more pics?

Unfortunately there is no cheap bolt in coilover kits other than the Technotoy setup but it is pricey. You can get the same Ground Control kit and cut and weld the perches. There are a lot of write ups on it and it doesnt look too hard. Good luck
  8. I wonder what the cost will be??

Welcome! I was born and raised in Cedar Rapids, then I wised up and moved to Colorado.

Yep that's how I test it too... screwdriver and a hammer. If it pokes through... Ive been replacing it.

So i'm replacing the rusted out areas on my Z and there are certain areas that are pitted, but not rusted through. The metal is still pretty solid so my question is this. Do I need to remove all pitted metal? or could I get away with only replacing the rotted areas and then spraying the pitted area with a product like POR15, then primer, and some body filler then paint? The entire car has been sandblasted so the pitted areas aren't rusted anymore.
  12. Welcome neighbor! Looks like the previous owner had a vinyl top on it causing all the rust on the roof. The rust can be repaired, but it is very labor intensive and will seem like a never ending project. But thats if you want it done right, if you just want a quick fix, I would suggest repairing the frame rails for safety, then knocking off the rough chunks and coating the rusted areas in POR15 or something similar. This will at least stop or slow down the rust process. Then do a DIY or Maaco paint job. If you ever wanna see what your getting into, let me know. My car is stripped down to the chassis and im in the process of repairing the rust right now.

Yea he used plastic on all the body panels. Cost was about a $1000. Then he charged me a couple hundred for some random parts i brought in.

Have you looked under the battery yet?
  15. Good to know. I havent welded in like 15 years so I will need a little practice. Maybe turning up the welder a little more when going through the primer? I will test it out on some scrap metal first. Im not sure whats wrong with lap welding floor pans in either. I always thought that was the correct way to do it, as long as you use weldable primer and seam sealer i dont see any issues. But to each his own.
  16. Thanks for the info grannyknot, thats what I was thinking
  17. Yes. I was referring to my floor pans that I will be overlapping and welding.
  18. I am getting my car back from media blasting next week and wanting to know what I need to do to prep the car before paint. Here was my plan; Interior floor pans: Weldable primer around areas to be repaired Epoxy primer Seam sealer Rustoleum paint Sound deadening material Undercarriage: Epoxy primer 3M undercoating Exterior/Engine bay: Epoxy Primer The rest will be done by body shop prior to paint Am I on the right track? Should I paint the undercarriage before I lay down the undercoating? Thanks for any input.

Awesome! Not too fond of the white Datsun sticker on the back but to each his own. Great work
  20. Yea the copper brown metallic actually looks really sharp. The doo doo brown is just awful in my opinion

Well my project is completely stripped down and ready for media blasting. I got a quote from a company that was anywhere between $900 to $1700 depending on how long it takes. Is this reasonable? What have some of you guys paid for sand blasting? I would buy one and do it myself but I dont have the space and dont really want to deal with the mess.
  22. Nice! Are you planning on keeping it the original color?
  23. My 75 280 is the dark brown metallic 214 color and was wondering if anyone else was as unfortunate as I am to have this color. Ive looked for pics online but havent come up with much.

Good to know. Thanks for the link! Glad to see the value on these cars going up, I've decided to stick with the 280. I'm definitely not doing it as an investment but its good to see it will at least hold some value when i'm done with it.
