Datsun-240z Vs Fairlady-z432
Thank you so much Alan, your inputs are perfect. I need to look how my Z432 has them . The small bolt-on cramp should be three for Z432 , four for all the other RHD S30 series . Kats

If my spare S20 goes into my HLS30-02146 , these racing parts will be assembled in the engine. The highlight of these parts is the Nissan Works titanium con-rod which was not listed on the sports option catalog . I don’t know this set of six con-rod was raced in a Works car or semi-works (private ) car , or even not assembled . Some one says not good for daily driving, because it primarily was for one chance victory , Alan will know more about it, please tell us what you know about . I sometimes feel I don’t want to assemble them because I will never see them again one by one after the engine completed. Kats

Thanks Gavin, yes their products are outstanding! I already have one for Fairlady Z series in my hand , looks exactly as original from any angle. I just want to re-use the old dirty tank , but it is possible to have a new perfect reproduction tank for HLS30-02146. Kats

Some good and some bad , I found the both tail lights are an early one (220-24152) which don’t have markings on the lens corner like other later ones . And they can be beautiful after some cleaning. The fuel tank is full of rust , needs to be replaced or cleaned. Kats

Datsun-240z Vs Fairlady-z432
Hi Mike, that is a good question, we can think the Factory A/C was available from the beginning, I mean from Oct 1969 for Fairlady Z series. Because, the very first catalog listed the A/C as an option for S30 (Fairlady-ZL ) , and the Service Shuho ( service bulletins)which Alan posted is dated at Nov 1969 . Mike , I was wondering too , the book dated July 1970 . Why ? Then I red the Forward again . It says “ the car S30-C which is designated for this A/C has been installed the system in the assembly line . However, cars other than S30-C are going to have the A/C as an option, then installation must be done at dealerships. So please refer this book for your installation “ . This leads to me a picture in my mind like this , when S30 cars were introduced A/C system was not so popular. But gradually people tended to have it for their S30 ( Fairlady ZL ) after purchased . Even some people would have wanted on their S30S ( Fairlady Z ) or PS30( Z432) which were regarded as cars they “ can’t chose A/C “ on the catalog . To accommodate those cases , Nissan issued this book making the installation easier for dealership mechanics. I think like this , what do you think of it? About S30-C , I studied a little bit . In the Service Shuho , we see Nissan gave a specific variation code for the car equipped the A/C on S30 , that is S30C ( C stands for air-Con I think) . Type code ,classification code , these are the matter of Japan Motor and transportation ministry. And those are interpreted into specific numbers and they are indicated on the registration/certification paper . A variation code is Nissan in-house code thus not shown on the paper . Having the A/C in S30 had nothing to do with Type code and classification code , so no need to declare for amendments of the paper. ( if you swapped Engine, or changed length/ width etc that is going to be a subject of the amendments ) About S30-00002 , I don’t know when the car had the A/C, I am very curious about it too . Kats

Hi Mike, where did you get the book ? I am so surprised that you have this copy which might be one of the rarest things I’ve ever seen. ( I had to buy a set of six books to buy just only this copy for 100000 JPY! I sold the other five books for 60000 JPY, so crazy expensive 😰) . Anyway , we will see how wonderful Nissan factory A/C for S30 series is . And interesting to operate! First , we need this face panel to have it in our cars. Kats PS : As you mentioned above, this A/C can’t be installed on Z432 series (PS30&PS30SB) , it is described in Forward. Literally, no you can’t. But That doesn’t mean “never “ because the system was designed for L-series engined car , however piping and assorted parts under dashboard area are nothing changed. So it is possible with some hand craft works for engine Bay Area . All the things in the system can be installed as they are , except compressor mount bracket, condenser ( need to be much smaller to avoid the air cleaner box and the coolant reservoir tank ) and the FICD (it was only designed for L-series) .I don’t know why Nissan quit making A/C for Z432 , but the A/C pulley for S20 is a good souvenir for us . Hi Gavin, we need to look at the car soon , I am surprised it was such a long time ago ! When omicron goes away , I will ask my friend to see the car in person. A few years ago he said S30-00002 was still there and covered just like the pictures. Kats

Hi Kirk , thanks! Was your 70 Fairlady first purchased in Aomori ? If so and if it doesn’t have an A/C , it makes sense to me because northern Japan people didn’t need an A/C especially those old days . Or even hotter regions, factory A/C was 200,000 JPY , it was certainly expensive for Japanese people at that time . Z-std was 930,000 JPY , an A/C costs Nearly 20% of the car itself. Kats

Thanks everyone, I ran out “like button” ! I need a jet fighter aircraft, I want to reach my room and show what I have for you, now ! Kats Oh , S30-00002 has air-con too ! You can see the beautiful check valve junction, one of the coolest looking piping and connectors among cars around 1970 .

Thanks Steve , you helped Matsuo san for the presentation, must be wonderful time for you ! Yes I would love to post pictures here when I am home , they are so interesting to see I guarantee it. I have heard it was not easy task to have the system in dashboard because it was so small room for the system. Matsuo san or Uemura san ? Told us Toyota 2000 GT couldn’t have it in a dashboard, but on the rear deck behind the two seat backs, a big box dominated the space . It was not cool at all . 260Z and 280Z have a factory installed air-con system, I am feeling those system were updated version of Fairlady Z series air-con system from Oct 1969 to Aug 1973 . But basically the same, both systems use vacuum power to move the inlet doors / airflow direction flaps . Kats

I am also thinking about “Nissan genuine air-con “ which was offered only in Fairlady Z series . I assume no Datsun 240Z was offered it from the factory, but look at pieces of the components, I am convinced that Nissan engineers were considering it would have been also available for LHD export market . I have been collecting parts for whole system and mostly done. Some parts are just fit into the existing components and some other parts needs just a little work . That is why our LHD 240Z has some “ not used “ brackets on the heater box , pre-cut on the fire wall insulator pad . So , “PLS30” with a factory in-dash air con system , a combination of sportier performance with comfortable cabin would have made the car to be a gorgeous GT . Surprisingly S20 has a special crank pulley for air-con with a part number E4200 ( Z432 oriented) , but I can’t see other air-con parts specifically made for Z432 . Nissan never officially offered air -con for Z432 . But I have seen some Z432 have the system using from Fairlady ZL system . In 1970 , it could have been around 6000 USD ( based on 1 USD for 360 JPY) , no more bargain price? What do you think? Kats

S20 air boxes
Hi Ian , what a surprising thing this is ! I was going to miss it if you wouldn’t notify us . This is the earliest version as it doesn’t have a small pipe which is sticking out from the rear top surface, for the blow-by tube from the valve cover . A buyer need to source a Darin plug and a tube at the rear bottom, and four pieces of brackets ( three for the long heater outlet hose across below the three Mikuni carbs, one for the fuel supplying tube from the strainer). Yesterday, my #2146 did a fuel dumping at Fukumoto san’s work shop , the fuel was so stink , and very sticky. Just a little inspection by fiber scope , I see some rust in the fuel tank. Now I am thinking an old pipe dream again. Or do I stick with a stock ? I tend to think having fun with a S20 . Kats IMG_3941.MOV

Hi Keith , Mr.Uekubo is a very passionate about Z cars , but not so interested in showing his work. But he had been taking pictures step by step , and they became into a big photo album . I was so amazed by it . Now I have got my another blue on blue , I may not be able to do like Mr. Uekubo , but trying to do myself as much as I can . First , cleaning inside , found some coins and tickets. Maybe someone thinks me I am idiot smiling about these fatale broken seats . But for me , they are an early “ thick padding “ seat backs which has so beautiful shape .And they are blue ! For me This is for the first time ever seeing blue original seat actually . My previous blue car already lost blue seats when I purchased, so I was waiting for this opportunity since 2000 . I am so excited . Kats

Hi xs10shl, I didn’t know that there are online books ! It must be much better quality of the pictures, I think. And The car 8D-420 , thanks for clarifying it for us . Now I have a question , did the car raced in Monte Carlo? The Caption says “ raced in Monte Carlo “ , I was thinking 8D-420 was a test car . I am dreaming about this car would still be sleeping in someone’s dark warehouse . Kats

I highly recommend that you get this book for your library. It contains a lot of pictures which were taken at motor shows in late 69 and early 70 . We can see the details when the cars were fresh right from the factory. And even more , there are special photos which are provided by Alan for the part of rally cars ! Kats

Hi Chris, this tool set is very unique, and they are new! What a great stuff you have got . I don’t know “SANKI “ , I will search it by internet, maybe a tool company? The black bag and screw drivers looks very old fashioned, so maybe they are for the earlier cars than S30 series? Interesting ! Kats

Hi Mike , I didn’t know that , Thanks! I think Nissan just didn’t want to do new drawings, simply lazy 🤭 I found another good example in the early manual , it shows a different jack handle which was never provided for our cars . Finally in the March 1971 book , Nissan corrected about the handle but just painted it on the old early picture , not revised with a whole new picture . You can see artificial paintings for the jack handle to look “correct handle “ for our cars. Additionally, now I see why export owner’s manual show this picture of tools , which is not the same bracket and jack retainer of our cars . This picture came from the one in the early Fairlady Z owner’s manual. Kats

My 03/70 has the same as yours , perpendicular style, no NISSAN MOTOR logo . And a letter “J” on it . I edited “ perpendicular “ to “ parallel “ vice versa in post #23 . By the way, your jack has “P F 1 “on the basement, that indicates your jack is original matching tool with your car , great! Kats
