Build Log: My 77' 280z
Alittle Update Went to the junkyard and found a lonesome 240z rusted and neglected. Very very sad. In the meantime Ive been trying to overhaul the lighting system for the Z. Including the interior lights. The stock lights are green tint and are really hard to see even on the highest setting. Most dash/instrument bulbs have a green or blue plastic coating on the tip to give the standard green for the gauges and such. The Z however has regular bulbs with no coatings but the gauges themselves have a little dome built in to the gauge that is a clear green color that makes the gauges as such. I was tired of squinting to see what speed I was going when driving at night. So I took the gauges out again this time to remove the green domes so hopefully less light will be obstructed and filtered. Went through the dash and removed gauges in order. The backs of the gauges have the dome held in with 2 plastic nubs that I punched out with a nail. Then I rotated the gauge to let the little dome thing fall out. I collected all the bulb domes in case I need them later. The climate faceplate had a wedge type bulb and I chose an amber bulb to try and match the color scheme of the new gauge color. The faceplate had a press fit dome thing that I removed by drilling the pegs a bit. Looks better in the end and brighter.

Injector Plug clips?
Im good with soldering but I dont have any way or know how to heat shrink. I did though pick up some varoius injector plug clips from A Saab, VW Jetta, and a Volvo. Im just going to use what works and solder the crap out of it then buy a heat gun for heat shrinking.

The Z Store
Well I did in the end want opinions on the matter and I did get them. Even with my integrity at question here. I mean a leather shift boot cost $30-60 on there. Really? Something I can make in a day and cost of like $9 shouldnt be $30 or more. I understand quality comes at a price. But overall you cant scare your customers away with high prices. I mean how much quality is there in a fender flare? They are all plastic/carbon in the end. Some things just dont need to bear a hefty price tag. If everyone is happy with MSA then I guess its time to close the thread down.

The Z Store
Well I do suppose "Rip Off" is a bit harsh but still I feel that prices could be fairer. I spent quite a bit of time last night going through different websites and I like Z source alot. They have new and used items availible. But if Nissan really does make parts for 240-280z cars then I may go there first cause dealer stuff cannot be beat. I remember for my 86 corolla, alot of parts were discontinued which is a shame. But while the parts were still availible, you could give them JDM Trueno part number and they could give you japanese parts cheap. Im not sure If you can do that through Nissan or not, but I think its worth trying once I find a japanese part I want.

The Z Store
Is it just me, or is this place a rip off? Stuff is overpriced in my opinion. I dont know of the quality because I could never fathom spending the amount they request for any of these items. I just want to know what the community thinks so maybe things will change. You know your 2 cents counts as a total to something in the end.

What do you think of this---
Although Panasport are nice wheels they are taking styling ques from Watanabe 8 Spokes. I believe that they are relatively light though and dont look bad at all. For $700 if they are as good as the one pictured above, its a steal.

Injector Plug clips?
I kind of like the quick release idea but I really just want anything that will hold without the aid of tape.

Signs of a bad harness?
Ok so Im not sure what happened or whats going on but. My headlights are working fine now. Both are at the correct output and work fine. It may be because while I was replacing some fuel hose and giving the engine compartment an inspection, that I unplugged and replugged the headlight plugs like 4 or 5 times to hopefully shake free any dust/debris that were inside them. That may have been causing the crappy ground all along. Im not sure, I just hope this doesnt become a natural occurrence. Thanks again for the help and information it was very helpful and insightful.

Where to get 5 Speeds
Well Fart I dont want to blow alot of dough. My cars a daily too so, I cant hang around a machine shop for a whole day really. I want a direct bolt up that I can do myself in a day of fun work. Thanks though

R200
Also I might be late on theis but if you look into you FSM using you VIN it will tell you 100% what you got for a Diff. I would say its probably a R200 also.

Where to get 5 Speeds
Would a 240sx bolt up to the L28? or would I need to swap bell housings or what? I googled this and it gave me a link to HybridZ, but their website sucks and gives me an error whenever I goto any of their pages.

Injector Plug clips?
Do Datsun Z's have clips or anything to hold the injector plugs on? I was replacing some fuel hose today and I noticed one had come off. I then realized none of the plugs have clips or anything to hold them in and it takes almost no effort to pull them off. I Elec. Taped mine. But there must be a better way?

Signs of a bad harness?
im not that dumb but, I dont know much granted on electrics. I looked into testing the fuses and all were grand. Light Probe Tested them both, and didnt notice any melting. Should I be looking for the connection of the Headlight Ground (RED) to the fusebox or somewhere in the harness in the engine compartment? The Ohm function on my ohmeter is broken also. so all i can test for is voltage really. Im a visual person so if anyones got pictures then Ill get the info stored faster. but thanks for trying to get me to understand.

No Headlight relay guide for 260-280z?
Yeah Im going with Z's harness, Im talking to him now on options. I really-really wish I could do this kind of stuff. But this is my weakest trait. Electric Work. Thanks all

Build Log: My 77' 280z
Wow Ive been busy but I havent done much it seems. I ordered AUTOPAL H4 headlamps and LEDs for my interior lights. The thing is, when replacing the bulbs for the dash lights you get frustrated because the designer was an arse. yes Im stupid To easily replace the dash lights you need to remove the entire dash and steering column suport the push or pull the gauges out as you pull forward the dash. This dash weighs about 30lbs as compared to the 86 dash which is like 15lbs or less. Total pain in the arse. Makes me regret how easy I had it.

What does this do?
I had the same fear myself but decided it was only causing trouble being there. If anything it would only lead to more electrical trouble later on down the road if I had left it, was what I figured. So I capped the ends of the leads and covered them into the carpet and tossed the switch in my spare parts box.

Signs of a bad harness?
Actually when I mull this over in my head it doesnt seem to make sense. Although the headlight was dim in both high/low, the harness plug end gave off 13V as it should so I dont get it. Am I just really that dumb for not getting it or am I missing something?
-
What does this do?
that may be. there was an iron wire, similar to the gauge of a coat hanger wire, and was pushed through the Fins in my Little AC raddiator thing behind my Climate Cont. Panel. I dont know what that was about but it was a crap job to say the least.
-
What does this do?
Ive got another question as to what this switch does? Its on the lower right hand side of the steering collumn and is like a knob for teh AC or something. I dont have AC in my car and so I took it out when putting my dash back in my car. It doesnt look to be factory installed at all, it just dangled there really. And when I got my dash back in and still had it plugged in, when I would test start the car I would hear a kind of a "POP" noise from the engine compartment. So I removed it completely and the pop noise went away.

No Headlight relay guide for 260-280z?
I feel that would be very hard for me and would cause a fire. And since my Datsun is my daily Im not sure if this relay upgrade will come to fruition. I think I may just buy one unfortunatly. Black Dragon has a cheap one and other members have them here. Giving Up +1

Signs of a bad harness?
I have no idea on where to start with that honestly. Im not good at electrics at all. I hate them. where are the headlight circuits located at under the dash?

Signs of a bad harness?
Fuses are fine and I ran the volt/ohmeter on the headlight plug and it runs at 13.6/13V when car is running. So I guess it was just bad luck with a bad bulb. Im still awaiting my H4 Lights from autopal to come in.
