Thanks Mike, I suppose that's good news. So, I'd need a stock 240z Slave Cylinder, and I'd be using a 240z throw-out bearing/ collar? Still trying to diagnose why my clutch won't engage.

Little bit of a frustration this weekend. Assumed the clutch was siezed, so we pulled the Trans to replace it (already replaced clutch master/slave cylinders, bled the system, ensured slave is engaging the fork sufficiently). New clutch didn't solve the issue; still isn't engaging. It has been suggested that I have the wrong size slave, or that the clutch fork isn't pivoting properly. I'm not sure. Owe a big debt of thanks to Fred B. for helping me pull the trans. He's a very patient man... Anyway, while the transmission was out, I took some photos. It's a three-piece trans, but that's about all I can figure out. Based on the information here (http://www.zcarz.us/TechnicalInformationPageTransmission.htm), it doesn't appear to be a TypeA or TypeB. Looking elsewhere lest it's a roadster trans (http://www.311s.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=17016&sid=c1b52a373aa0e3c26f30678f68ed72c7, other CL ads), it doesn't appear to be one of those either. I'm flummoxed! Anyone recognized this 5-Speed?
  4. Carl, Do you know which clutch fork was typically used for this roadster tranny swap? Would it have been the 240z fork, or the roadster fork?
  5. Carl, Now you've got me excited to dig into the car this weekend. I'd be willing to bet it's a roadster tranny though, since the only information I have about the car came from the folks that built it. They did a confusing mix of work considering they left the car looking only lightly modified from the exterior. I'll let you know what I find out this weekend,
  6. Its bolted in there without issue. Todd down at Tidewater made a good point: Since this car was built in '82, there probably wasn't a robust used supply of ZX 5-Speeds... the Roadster 5-Spd would have been about 10-15 years old, probably easy to find a good used one. At any rate, if you know anyone with an '81-'83 5-Spd here in VA, send them my way!
  7. Thanks much, I actually took a whole 280z clutch setup from a car Eiji was parting out, so I suspect I have the collar. I'd love to swap this tranmission for a ZX 5-Spd, but everyone is asking $450+ on CL recently. Seems nuts to have to drop it again when I finally find a Trans, but the siezed clutch needs to be fixed.
  8. Hello, It might be more appropriate to put this under "Parts Swapping," but I'll let you all be the judge: My '71 has the stock L24 blocked matted to a Roadster 5-Speed. I'm going to replace the clutch. Two Questions: 1) I obtained (free) a 280z clutch disc/ pressure plate. Can this setup be used with this block/transmission? 2) Throwout bearing: Would I need to find the appropraite bearing for a Roadster Transmission? I assume this differs from the 240z bearing (?) Thank you!

The only place I personally know of that does faithful decals would be Bansai Motorworks in Maryland (http://www.zzxdatsun.com/catDecals.php). The decal page doesn't list tires, but perhaps Mike would be a good place to start. There might be others, and you might have already known about that. Good luck!

Sorry for the delay in responding; was out on vacation. Thanks for the .PDF; interesting read. I'll contact them to see if they have any historical information lying around.

Has anyone ever heard of Quikor Springs? My '71 was modified in the early '80s, and I have the advertisement that the previous owner saw when he bought the car (so, the modifications that were done two owners ago). It says "Quikor Springs, lowered, KYB gas struts." All I can find is 'Quickor' (http://www.quickorgarage.com/springs.htm) but there's no Datsun specific info; their products for the Z are just sway bars. The photos make the springs look progressive based on my very limited knowledge of... well, springs. Anyway, the suspension is probably 30 years old so it's time to replace it regardless, but I'd just never heard of these springs. Anyone have a full Illumina setup for the 240z lying around anywhere (wink wink?!) Cheers, and as always, thanks!
  12. Never fear! He still offers that engine hardware kit. He'll be adding products to the site slowly. People keep ordering these motors from him... I understand that keeps him busy
  13. Zedy - That motor halfway down the STR 2.8 page ought to look familiar.
  14. Couldn't agree more! Keep up the good work.
  15. ... and websites
  16. Well now that I know what they look like when they're cleaned up, I need to polish my wheels!
  17. Eiji's new website for Datsun Spirit is online: www.datsunspirit.com
  18. Hah! Mine too. "Well what're you waiting for?!"
  19. That choke plate is insane.

Thanks all, catching up on the responses, I removed the slave cylinder and had free motion in the clutch fork; confirmed the slave was moving the fork as well with the help of someone else pumping the clutch while I watched. New transmission is coming at some point regardless - the roadster 5-speed it has was installed in the early '80's when the supply of ZX transmissions was still installed in the ZXs... It's two decades old and with the motor I'll be putting in this fall I'd like a beefier transmission anyway. Plus, then I can make some lucky Roadster-owners day. Yes, had the clutch pedal down, followed the instructions. Admittedly in that video I probably didn't rev enough; didn't want to ruin the 40 year old driver's seat if something terrible happened. If you catch my drift. Will keep playing with it and re-trying these steps.

Thanks, Carl. Definitely not one of my prouder weekends in the knowledge department.

So I figured this out. It's a case of 95-degree heat making a dirty 88 look like a 36. Boy do I feel dumb. But while we're on the subject: How do you edit a post? I can't seem to figure that out. Thanks.

Tried it. Neither way worked. Afterwards we put it in first and I started it while my buddy pushed it. Was able to successfully drive around the block a couple times that way, although I never could shift out of first. New clutch & transmission, here I come. Anyone have an '81-'83 ZX Non-Turbo 5-Speed lying around in the DC area? Or Dallas?

I'm a bit confused. I found a March-'71 car in a junkyard today and was pulling some of the older Series-1 bits out of it, when I thought "maybe I'll grab the head." It was an E31 after all. I ended up leaving it there, didn't want to yank it out and then find he wanted too much for it. But when I got back to my newer car at the house, I double checked the head installed on the new car I had since its also a March-'71 car. I know some engine work had been done, but I was flummoxed when I saw it had an E36 head. http://datsunzgarage.com/heads/ Did it squeeze between the E31 and E88 for a short while? What on earth is an E36 head from? Can't be anything wild, otherwise I'd be able to find a write-up about it (thank the BMW E36 for making it difficult anything other than Bimmer information from Google). Thanks in advance, Bill

Picked this up the other day out of curiosity. Wasn't as in-depth or earth shattering as I hoped, but still a nice read. Here's a copy for those who hadn't seen it.
