  5. Hey JM we should probably take our conversation off line as we are hijacking this thread.... Jeremy, effectively shortening the length would work... and your trans that died, well you probably broke the shift fork and lunched the transmission...If it was a late 5 spd some of them have aluminum shift forks and can break very easily....not a good idea to speedshift! If you are looking for a transmission that can handle that abuse I would suggest finding a comp "B" box and have the shift forks double pinned to handle the strain... R
  6. Yes, that would be it...I have only seen 3 of these transmissions ever! They are the early Japanese comp box pictured in "how to modify your datsun" pp148 of the old book.
  7. JM, sounds like you might have had an early nissan comp box with steel syncros. I have a "B" box, steel synco trans with the a long tailshaft and output flange for a two piece driveshaft. The gear ratios are the same as a medium close roadster box. Explain that one!! Like I said there are some odd ball transmissions running around out there but the basics are included in my post above.... Jeremy, the designation -A at the end of your transmission model number number indicates that it is an early style "A" box, which could have found its way into your car if it is a really early 72 or it if it had been replaced at one point. As far as the truck shifter, thats a really good idea...I will have to file that one away into the memory banks :) thanks JM
  8. Yeah, I did this in my 240Z ten years ago. If your windows are stiff or tight rolling up or down these kits will not work well and will not last. Be sure that your windows are adjusted so that they roll up and down with minimum effort prior to attempting to install such a kit.
  9. Jeremy, There are several types of transmissions for Z cars and Roadsters but to simplify this regarding this discussion there are "A" series transmissions and "B" series transmissions. There are plenty of short shift kits for the "B" series box. And nothing really available for the "A" series box. Most roadsters came with an "A" series box so a "short shift kit" doesn't really apply, I suspect that you are looking at a set of aluminum shift bushings that do not effect the shift pattern. From the identifier you gave it sounds like your Z has an "A" series transmission. If you were to install a "B" series transmission there would be solutions out there for a short shifter.... Now that being said, there is not much benefit to a short shifter in a Z it can make the car much harder to shift because of a significant change in geometery of the shifter...again this is a preference thing. I had a short shifter on one of my 5 spd "B" boxes and never really liked it...I actually wound up taking it off in favor of a shortened shift lever that accomplished almost the same thing. I hope this helps.

    Okay! good luck.

Autopower would be one option. Or you can haul your car 4 hours to San Diego and have PDK Fabrication custom build a cage for your car. the latter is a MUCH better solution.
  12. Wholesale Tube Bending in Vista CA did an unbelieveable, top quailty job on both my Roadster and my Z...And the Z was NOT easy to do. Very reasonable too, and they let me work with the fabricator to get it just the way I wanted it done on both cars. I cant say enough good things about these guys.
  13. OUCH! :finger:
  14. In 760 I can recomend Olympic Powdercoating Services in Escondido CA. they do a first class job.
  15. John, Carl. I had heard about the car from Pete....I knew he was going to be out testing around the first of the year, but I did not realize it was going to come out this quickly.... BTW, Pete is now answering the phone as Brock Racing Enterprises again...Sounds like BRE is back.
  16. I know that Gerry has had offers, I could assume that you have as well, (although I don’t know for how much)...I have as well, Nissan has said that if I ever want to sell they are interested, and my car is a replica... My point was that there are several Z cars that are very valuable already...And I could name a few. I apologize if I low-balled the implied value of your car....essentially my comment was correct; you would not even entertain an offer of $50k. :) Oh, and yes Carl your car is neat as hell!
  17. I don't think anyone (here) knows for sure why they pulled out...We can guess that they are looking to save money with their current move coming up. Sponsorship is a difficult thing, Nissan has to look at this as a business proposition. We will be promoting Datsun, and Nissan was, but is no longer is Datsun so they are conflicted..Nissan spent lots of money in the 80's to get away from the Datsun name....This is a typical problem, they are looking to sell NISSAN not DATSUN and they are looking for the best ways to do that. Vintage racing to them has DATSUN written all over it...not NISSAN. Its a tough sell to get Nissan to sponsor a vintage event for that simple reason.
  18. Money is a tricky thing, we have to sell value. Nissan sees that as advertising dollars spent. We agree, we would make a big deal about them helping to finance a truck to haul our cars out here. I have my HSR West license so that should not be an issue for me, but the entry fee, the flight, hotel, food, plus stuff that our cars will need! Will cost me plenty, a couple thousand I figure. I am trying to bring both my Roadster and my Z. I know my 510 will not be ready by then... It is rumored that the Georgia Z club was looking to put together a tent like what they used to do for the SCCA ARRC back in the day with a bunch of Datsun's under the tent, and then out on the track...That would be awesome!
  19. Just got my copy of CMM yesterday, listed number one, 240Z.
  20. we'll see, Nissan will need to be willing to write us a check to help with expenses.
  21. IF we can get there, you got it! R
  22. There is new life in the chance that Nissan will help us to get out to the Mitty. Hector Cademartori, Les Cannaday and I have put together a few options for Nissan after talking to the head guys Nissan Motorsport about this yesterday. Believe it or not, they claimed that they had not even heard about this event! So we are going to propose a few options to Nissan Corporate directly to see if they won't help some. more details to follow as this comes together (or apart) over the next couple of days.
  23. Your right, thanks Mike....
  24. I think that some of you may have missed my point. Early Datsun Z cars in their best original condition will command a decent price. The TREND is a bump in price like what the 60's muscle cars are currently enjoying. Maybe not to the SAME degree, but more so than what is indicated above. I agree that it might be some time before we see a Z top $75k and Montoya I will gladly let you know about it. Again, this will be for the high end perfect low mileage car OR for a race car with well documented history. I can think of several people who would consider paying $100K for Gerry Mason's original BRE Z....and I am sure that Carl Beck would not take less than $50K for his restored BRE off road Z. I guess this is a double edge sword. I would like the value of these cars to go up some, and I think that they will. I have a significant investment in several rare racing Datsuns and would like my investment to increase in value. But not so much that I feel that they should be locked away in a museum, I prefer to race my cars and I enjoy doing so.... I think I would much prefer to see a racing Z or 510 at the Monterey Historics that would be a much better validation. Not necessarily a larger price tag.
  25. fair enough...We all have opinions.John, I think you have a good point too. I think that we can look to popular sportcars & hotrods and figure that they will bring good money at auction. A proper restoration, or restorod will do well it seems. An amphibicar, strong following amongst a very small group of people, probably not....I agree we will see a bunch of them next year and they will not do as well.
