  1. Hey mates While driving back home from work today I was forced to brake hard on the freeway (basically went from 75 to 30 in a rather short distance). When I reapplied the gas my car jerked, as if one of the wheels was loose. Confused I braked hard a few more time (making sure no one was near by) and long and behold the car does the same thing again. The best way I can explain this is the car literally jerks to the left when I reapply the gas. When I got home I pulled the front wheels off. The drivers side seems quite normal with no movement, but the passenger's side I can move the wheel a few inches in each direction (left and right) as if the rack has a LOT of play. Any one experience this before? I'm going to have it looked at this weekend but as for now I'd like some advice. Thanks Jan
  2. Hey mate I do have one question. For my understanding the tensioner is not supposed to have ANY slack during the first install. Looking at your picture with the chain I can see there's a bit of room there. Was this the way you finally installed it? Am I wrong here guys? Thanks Jan
  3. Hello all I drove a tad over 250 miles today for the holiday and I'm hearing an odd noise from the rear. What is the best way to check the rear bearings on these lovely cars? Should it leave the wheel on and just yank on the it or should I take the wheel and drum off and just move the hub itself. Any opinions would be lovely. Thanks Jan
  4. You may have hit the nail on the head there. I went for a short (roughly 5 mile drive) this morning. Got the engine nice and warm and went through all the gears (minus 5th). When I got back I put the temp reader on the trans right after I got home (no cool down time). It read 145, which seems to be a normal temp here. Out of curiosity I measured the temp of my exhaust - 308 in change - measured right next to the trans. It was hotter at the down pipe - about 340. Could it be that the exhaust is just getting everything around hot? Thanks Jan
  5. Hey mates This evening I was driving my buddy home from my place. Total drive time was about an hour mostly speed at or above 45 mph - so in 4th gear or higher. When I got home I noticed that my transmission tunnel was warm to the touch, not hot just warm on the passengers side - there's no carpet there at the moment. Curious I crawled under the car and placed my finger on the transmission and it was hot to the touch. Using my fancy laser temp reader I got a reading of 147 after about 15 minutes of cool down. Is this normal? I have noticed a small leak of oil - not sure what kind - that seems to be on the back up like socket wire of the transmission. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks Jan
  6. Is there enough room there just to pull the studs out with all the brake hardware removed?
  7. Black Gold Man Seriously, can I do this to all the studs? Can I remove the dust shield also? Thanks Jan
  8. Hey mates A few weekends ago I went over to the local tire shop to have my brakes bled - basically redid my front discs and needed the air out. Well they pulled all four tires off and bled the brakes per usual. When they were putting the wheels back on they said one of the lug studs was in very poor shape and should be replaced soon. Since I don't feel like pulling the bearings off I'ved lived with the wheels on. Well it has come time to do the rear drums - as well...its metal on metal..or very close to it. I'm afriad that if I pull the lug nut off the one lug nut that is in "poor shape" it will snap. Two questions. 1. What is your opinion on what I should do? 2. Is it safe to drive with three lugs in the rear? (yes I know dumb question, but I really don't have a weekend to pull the rear hub out and do the bearings - since I'm already in there). Thanks Jan
  9. Hey mates I've asked this question before but for the life of me can't seem to find it again. The connector that connects the temperature guage to the sensor in the thermostat housing. Does anyone know where to get one as mine is....er....falling apart. Thanks Jan
  10. Ladies and Gents Have a question for you guys. My Z is making a rather annoying squeaking noise from the front suspension occasionally. I took the tire off and tightened everything on the front suspension per torque specs. I do have a bit of a question. I replaced the brakes which required taking off all the hub and all. When I reinstalled it I tighted the hub bolt - the one that sits on the spindal - by hand and then a quarter or so turn with a wrench. If this was loose, could this cause any issues - persay a sound. Thanks Jan
  11. Thank you all for the help. Got under the car today and found that the two 18mm bolts that hold the strut to the lower control arm were, loose is a nice word. I tightened these and everything else - ball joint, tc rod and all - it was all not tightened down all the way. No more movement at all. Thanks again Jan
  12. Zed Head That said wire is sadly gone, fell off when I was doing the front cover a while ago. Should I just add a ground to the distributor? Thanks
  13. Hey mates A few years back I did the ZX dizzy conversion on my Z. This past weekend, when checking everything I noticed that the little tab on the front of the distributor - near the vac advance - is not connected to anything. Is this supposed to be a ground? Does it actually do anything to performance/drivability? Picture is not of mine, but I'm speaking of the tab located on the housing. Thanks Jan
  14. Mates New sympton to mension. When I go over bumps there's a squeaking noise (loudish) coming from the right front area. Thanks for the advice Jan
  15. When you say locking nut do you mean the one on top of the shock? I'll take a look at all of these on my next day off.
  16. Hey mates This past weekend I did an oil change on my Z - added some zinc which made it worth while. While I had the car in the air I grabbed the passengers side wheel to make sure the bearing and lugs were holding everything. To my amazement I can move the whole strut assembly - wheel and all - a bout 3 degrees in each direction as if I was turning. Any ideas what could be bad? Strut mounts? Thanks Jan
  17. Zed Head I used to live in Florida so I'm not expecting anything new, minus more rain as we get something like 8" all year here. Thanks mates for the replies, will let you all know how things go. Thanks Jan
  18. Hello mates It looks as if in the near future I will be moving down to Georgia - Savannah to be exact - for a job. A couple questions, any thing I need to know about registering my Z down there? Do they do emissions? Anything I need to know about keeping a Z (and maybe a 620 later on) down south. Thanks Jan
  19. Hey guys Quick question. Is the flywheel from an L20B the same as the one on in the L28E? Thanks Jan
  20. On the topic of clutches, which ones do you guys run? Do you like/dislike them? Thanks Jan
  21. Yup sounds just about right. Doesn't really do it when its cold - or I haven't noticed - does do it when its hot. Well when I gather the money together I'll probably spend it on a new clutch. Thanks Jan
  22. Zed It happens as I'm engaging the clutch and taking off from a dead stop.
  23. Hey mates For the past few weeks I've noticed that on acceleration in first from a dead stop (and only in first) I get a horrible vibration which vibrates, well, pretty much the whole car. It feels as if something is loose or not grabbing. Any ideas? Clutch? Engine mounts? Jan
  24. I know this is a rather dumb question. If hypothetically speaking it is an intake leak (or exhaust) would it be fine to drive with? The engineer in me can see the issue with having a leak, but I really don't have the energy to take the manifolds off AGAIN and replace the gasket AGAIN only to have this happen a few months down the road. I'll look into the belt this weekend when I have a day off. Thanks all Jan
  25. Hello mates With the temps in the west where I live getting cooler I've noticed something rather interesting about my Z. When the car is started from a cold start - as in left sitting for a few horus and the motor is under 100 degrees - the engine will squeak on startup and run rather poorly for a few minutes. Poorly meaning this: if I press on the gas to raise the idle of rinstance the car will stumble. This only lasts a few moments - the poor running that is - and the said squeaking noise from the engine only lasts a few minutes. Once the engines been running maybe 5 minutes tops the noise is gone. The engine does idle rather low maybe 600 or so RPMs when I first start her - usually sits at 1000 when nice and warm. Anyone have any ideas? Could it be an exhuast leak that disipates as the engine gets warmer? Could it be something on the belt? Could it be a vacuum leak? Thanks guys Jan
